Three content policies[edit]

We write articles based on three content policies: WP:NPOV, WP:V, WP:NOR and some procedural policies based around WP:CONSENSUS.

Wikipedia is a tertiary source, its articles must be based on published reliable secondary sources. The best way to conceptualise it is as a newspaper and archive of published sources. If a subject has not been published in a reliable secondary source then we do not include it, not matter how worthy the subject. In addition if a reliable source does not describe an event using terminology that we think sums up the event we can not describe it that way, because this is a tertiary source and it dos not publish original ideas. If you want to contribute to this encyclopaedia, you must work within the self imposed bounds of the three content policies, or you will end up wasting a lot of time both for yourself and other editors.

The reason we have these self imposed limits is because a decade of collective experience, has taught the editors of this encyclopaedia, that binding ourselves with these rules stops the Wikipedia's articles becoming blog pages and not encyclopaedic articles.

As the character of Thomas More says in a Man for All Seasons "What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil? ... And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you - where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's, and if you cut them down -- and you're just the man to do it -- do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Carbon black ‎ . It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. First, I strongly recommend that you create an account so that when you do your editing your changes are not confused with other users who have this same IP address.

Second, it's very cool that your school work is providing you information to improve this encyclopedia. However, it's not a good idea to make contributions such as "Meaning #2 - as per paper in one of my sociology classes". Could you imagine reading that in a formal (book) encyclopedia? It would be a little odd. :-)

One approach you might take is to gather all the changes you would like to make to the article, present them on the article's talk page, and then see what other contributors have to say about those changes.
