From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jewish views on marital relations, is also known as Tashmish Hamitah (Hebrew: תשמיש המיטה). In Rabbinic literature, there are Halakhot and detailed instructions on how and when to have sexual intercourse. This has been discussed extensively by Chazal, along with keeping a clean expression.

In Jewish tradition, sexual relations are the obligation of a man to his wife. This obligation is known as "onah" (עונה). Although engagement in sexual relations should be entirely at the discretion of the woman, a wife should not withhold or use sex as a negotiating ploy.

Judaism sees the passion and the pleasure of sexual relations between a couple as positive things, provided that their use would be to mitzvah and not for pleasure or fulfillment of desire. This view derives from access to the sanctification of the material, when he became the right purpose and in the holiness and Tzniut.[clarification needed]

Treatment of marital relations[edit]

The basic Jewish positive attitude towards sex and sexuality is especially opposed to Western Christianity, which does not view the matter much in favor, due to a belief that sex has been contaminated by original sin. The Jewish sages recognized that the sexual need of mankind (also known as yitzra de'arayot, יצרה דעריות) is essential for perpetuating society, despite having known its negative sides which may lead to sins. For the aforementioned reason, Chazal's attitude and statements on the matter are dual, and they recognize two inclinations in mankind, the Yetzer hatov (the "Good inclination") and the Yetzer hara (the "evil inclination"), that can both influence sexuality and sexual behaviors.

Maimonides wrote in his book "The Guide for the Perplexed": Touch is obscene, because it gives preference to eating and sexual intercourse. Nahmanides wrote that it was not obscene, but that's holy and clean.

The Rishonim presented that matter as the husband's passion for breeding, that by this he happily spends his seed.

Chazal determined times to maintain marital relations, based on what they appraised the woman's opinion of these times she wished. And therefore, any time the man notices that his wife wants to intercourse, even when you say it in her mouth, he is committed to the law. And took posekim, most of the commandments of 'onah' was said when the woman desire it. and quoted the Talmud: "Every woman demanded ('Tovat') her husband speak commands will be her sons that even the generation of Moses were not like them". and that means: 'Tovat', that it indicates or adorns herself to notice her, or euphemistically tells him "come to me (like Leah said to Jacob) and etc., but she can not ask in the nerve, and boldness and words of Chazal "rude people".
