TheraBreath is a brand of oral care products made by the American manufacturer, Dr. Harold Katz, LLC, headquartered in Los Angeles, California. It treats issues related to halitosis and is also known under the name “TetroBreath” in Europe[1] and “The Breath Company”[2] in the United Kingdom. From its original chlorine dioxide formulation included in its toothpaste and oral rinse, TheraBreath has expanded to a line of oral care products that treats sources of bad breath including the tongue, throat, gum tissue, and tonsils.[3] The TheraBreath oral care products are used by a significant number of people around the world.[4][5]

TheraBreath was created by Harold Katz at the California Breath Clinics in 1994 to address issues about bad breath, dry mouth, gum health and general oral care.[6][7][8] Halitosis is caused by a group of sulfur producing bacteria that live and multiply within the oral cavity. The TheraBreath oral care products include toothpastes, oral rinses, sprays, drops, gum and lozenges[9]

Properties and ingredients[edit]

Halitosis, colloquially called bad breath, is caused by anaerobic sulfur producing bacteria that thrive on the surface of the tongue and in the throat.[10] These anaerobic bacteria feed on sugar, amino acids (building blocks of protein), dead tissue and trigger the release of sulfur compounds from the back of the tongue and throat.[11][12] These smelly substances, called volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) cause bad breath odor.[13][14] To address these issues, TheraBreath created “Oxyd-8”, a registered oxygenating active ingredient in its products.[15] [16] This compound, made from chlorine dioxide (ClO2), stabilizes and generates reduction–oxidation reaction in the mouth. Oxyd-8 inhibits the ability of the anaerobic bacteria to multiply rapidly and then instantly converts existing sulfur compounds into non-odorous and non-tasting sulfate salts. As a result, these actions neutralize associated odors in the mouth.[17][18]
