A "Blount" Thing To Say

I am Tyler Blount and a freshman at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. I am on a pre-dentistry track, and I am majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. Georgia Southern is a "large-scale, small-feel" research university in a rural part of Georgia. I have adjusted well, and I think it is the best university in Georgia.

Besides trying to keep a high grade point average like the 4.0 I graduated high school with, I do not have many hobbies. College has proven to be much more difficult than high school, and after the first few grades I received, I now see the importance of studying and not procrastinating. In my free time I go out with my friends who hail from many different countries such as the Bahamas, Iceland, Jamaica, Denmark, Honduras, and, of course, the United States. I have recently discovered how much fun going to the Recreation Activities Center can be, and recently, I received my belay certification. Since I have been at college, rock climbing has become the closest thing to a hobby to me besides watching television. Does the healthier of the two really need to be pointed out? A few television shows that I have become obsessed with over the years are Big Brother, The Amazing Race, The Mentalist, and Grey's Anatomy just to name a few.

I was not a very outgoing student during my high school year. While I have been at Georgia Southern I have joined S.A.G.E., Student Alliance for a Green Earth, and Eagle Entertainment. Both organizations are perfect for me. I like being a part of an organization that can make a difference and also one that plans and holds events.

Why Wikipedia Loves Me... or Hates Me

I have added a few small things to Wikipedia since created an account in mid-August with my English 1101 class. Among them is a section in under Georgia Southern University about bus transportation on campus. My first Wikipedia article I wrote was deleted for sounded too much like an advertisement. My second article still lives in the Wikipedia community: Flagship Ventures. It is a tourist attraction located near my hometown. I will continue to contribute to Wikipedia if I come across a topic of which I know a descent amount of information. My class may end in December, but my days of Wiki-ing are not quite over.

Technology and Me

I wouldn't say that I am advanced enough in my technological education to release a virus to shut down the entire computer system serving my university, but I would say that I possess enough basic to intermediate knowledge of technology to fix most of my computer problems. At a young age I was fascinated with computers and always wanted one. This was in the mid-nineties when not everyone had a computer, but everyone was realizing the explicit need of such a device. Because I was fascinated at such a young age, my knowledge of computers was much more than that of my peers. But as the years have gone by I haven't taken my knowledge further, and I actually feel that my know-how now falls slightly behind. Don't get me wrong; even though it may fall behind, I still get calls from home to walk my parents through installing a program or connecting a game console to the television and making it work.

Listen up, Wikipedia!

In the past I used Wikipedia for a plethora of things. I use it for projects, papers, and even when I am just curious about a particular topic. I am always careful when I use Wikipedia for school-related purposes. Some teachers are completely consensual to the use of Wikipedia as a source while other teachers completely disapprove of using Wikipedia as a credible source. I was once apprehensive of the credibility of Wikipedia, but since I have seen how truly difficult it is to keep and article on Wikipedia and the many stipulations there are for references and accuracy, I trust Wikipedia much more. Even with this new-found trust, I do not believe Wikipedia should be used as a source for school assignments. It is simply too easy. Students should have to dig for information and read more articles than just one article that has condensed all the information for a topic into one page.

The true workings of Wikipedia are still new to me. I was completely unaware of the behind-the-scenes workings of the intricate system that is Wikipedia. Although I do see the benefit and the purpose of having users who sit around and read people's articles to check for Wikipedia worthiness, sometimes I feel that such people have no lives at all. This, I assure you, only stems from my own self-anger for when my own articles are deleted or completely torn apart by these readers.

Mis Idiomas

I currently only speak one language - English. I can speak basic elementary Spanish and maybe even a little intermediate Spanish, but my Honduran friends tell me I should just stick with English for now. I plan to study more Spanish in the very near future and study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country so that I can practice Spanish in everyday life. I believe this will be the best way to learn it. My goal is to be fluent in Spanish so that I will be able to practice dentistry in two languages. To do this I have added Spanish as my minor.

Okay? So what if I don't like it?

Everyone always seem to talk about the things they like or what interests them, but I would much rather talk about the things I dislike. These aren't things that I just simply don't like because I don't have an opinion about them. Of course if I were to list everything I dislike, the page could go on for days, so I will stick to just a few things. - When people use the word "mine's." That isn't correct, and it sounds a bit ignorant. - I dislike when people waste money on things that are not really needed. Maybe if I had more money that I could waste on things it wouldn't be such a pressing issue with me, but since I don't, I hate money wasters. - Hypocrites. Need I say more? - I hate nuts with a passion. Sometimes I just tell people I'm allergic so I won't have to eat any food that contains them. - Please don't drink out of my cup without asking. Most of the time I really don't want someone else's lips on my cup or straw. - If you text me and I don't text back, don't text me five more times. Just don't do it. - I wish people would just be logical sometimes. It really annoys me when people don't make simple, logical decisions. - Clutter is one of my biggest pet peeves. I practically hassle my roommates until everything is clean.
