Musical Gwanghwamun love song(2017)

Musical Gwanghwamun Love Song(2017) is romatic jukebox musical consisted of songs by composer, Lee Young Hoon. It is about a thought of the last moment before die, story of searching for the memories and true love. CJ E&M and Seoul City Musical Company went through a co-production. The performance starts on December 15th to January 14th at Sejong Art Center.

1. life

Lee young hoon was a musician who mostly focused on theatre, main stream media and dance music. However, in 1985, after he was introduced to lee moon sae from um-inho, he started to write popular songs. In 1985, with the success of various songs that lee moon sae sang, he opened up a new genre called ‘pop Ballard.’ In 1987, lee young hoon became the best composer in the country by winning the ’golden disc award’ and the ‘best composer award’ with 〈When love is gone〉, 〈break up story〉, 〈Only the sound of her laughter〉.

His 3rd album became a huge hit and sold 1,500,000 copies. However, when his 4th album became the new record by selling 2,850,000 copies, it became a nation-wide news. The 5th album that came out in 1988 had several thousand orders even before the album came out. His songs were very popular among teenagers. With the 5th album, the singer, Lee Moon Se won the ‘golden disc award’ 3 times in a row. The high end ‘pop ballard’ songs that Lee Young Hoon wrote changed people’s perspectives on popular music. His work inspired many people to listen to more Korean songs on the radio instead of listening to American pop songs. Until 2001, he released 8 more regular albums and 3 special albums with lee moon se. Even after he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, he wrote 《Old love1·2》 and produced the musical 《Gwanghwamun love song》. He died on February 14th 2008 at the age of 49.

Synopsis

In 2017, middle aged man, myungwoo is in a coma before his death. The god who takes care of humanly events, wulha, presents himself in front of myungwoo and brings him on the journey of his past. The first place that the god broght him was the first moment when myungwoo met his first love soo-ah which was the spring of 1984, Deoksugung palace(Hangul: 덕수궁) painting competition. Myungwoo was falling in love with this passionate, motivational woman. However, myungwoo witnessed soo-ah, a college student, getting attacked by the police force during the riot. He felt guilty because of the fact that he couldn't protect her and eventually left her. Myungwoo was searching through the moments of regret in the past with the god, wulha and was led to a mysterious empty house that he could not remember.

Critics reception

Musical <Gwanghwamun Love Song> has other versions. The first one is premiered in 2011 and the new version of it is opened on December, 2017. Even it has same title and songs , but composition which means script, stage, arrangement are totally different from old one. So New version will be premiered on December, 2017. Opening night review of the musical will be released on that day.
