Sevenson Environmental Services, Inc. (Sevenson) is an environmental remediation, groundwater remediation, dredging and geotechnical/earthworks contractor based in Niagara Falls, New York that specializes in the cleanup of hazardous waste, toxic waste, nuclear waste and contaminated groundwater, sediments and soils for corporate clients and federal, state and local governments.

Sevenson was founded in 1917 by Albert Elia, incorporated as the Albert Elia Building Company in 1947 and renamed to Sevenson Environmental Services in 1988 to reflect the companies transition to a full-service 'all environmental' contractor[1].

Since its selection as the principal contractor for cleanup work at the Love Canal Superfund Site in 1978, Sevenson has worked on over 1,600 projects and 123 Superfund sites on the EPA's NPL list including Love Canal[2][3], Fox River (Wisconsin)[4][5], U.S Radium Corporation[6], Hudson River[7], Onondaga Lake[8], Housatonic River[9][10] and Joliet Army Ammunition Plant[11]. In 2013, Sevenson ranked #42 in Engineering News-Record's Top Environmental Firms list[12]. In 2010, Sevenson reported $340 million in revenue and approximately 800 full and seasonal employees.

History[edit]

Early 1900s[edit]

Sevenson's roots date back to 1917. In that year, Albert Elia, a Niagara Falls, New York architect, began a general construction business. In 1947, Elia's four sons joined the business and incorporated it as the Albert Elia Building Company, Inc*. Although the company initially specialized in residential building construction to meet the post-World War II housing shortage, in the early 1950's, the company expanded into industrial, institutional and heavy civil construction work. In the 1970's the third generation of the Elia family joined the company and in 1982 acquired the business from their fathers and renamed it Sevenson Construction Corp.

Love Canal (1978) to Present[edit]

The company's initiation into environmental remediation work occurred in 1979. In that year the Albert Elia Building Co., Inc. was selected as the principal contractor for cleanup work at the Love Canal Superfund Site in Niagara Falls, New York. The company's success at the Love Canal project led to other cleanup projects.
