Anne Lister College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of York. Located on East Campus, it is the newest college at the university. It is named after Anne Lister, a Yorkshire diarist and landowner, and was opened in 2021.

History[edit]

Work began on the new college in November 2019, with work on David Kato College occurring simultaneously.[2] The name of the college was announced in January 2021.[3] The college was officially opened 21 October 2021.[4][better source needed] To mark the opening of the college, discussions were given by various experts on Anne Lister and her legacy.[5]

Anne Lister College partly opened in October 2021, then fully opened in January 2022. Until the college was at full capacity, students had to be housed in separate cities. Most undergraduates lived in University Quarter in Hull, which normally serves as accommodation for University of Hull students.[6] The university provided a shuttle bus to allow students to attend lectures and offered to pay 10% of rent in Hull. This was increased to 25% after pressure from the students, a move supported by the University of York Student Union.[7] It was due to these circumstances that undergraduates are referred to as 'Hulligans'. Ultimately, the shuttle bus service cost the university an estimated £230,650, which was £3,300 per day.[8] This covered twenty two daily bus journeys, eleven from Hull-York and eleven from York-Hull, with the earliest bus being 07:25 and the latest being 02:00.

Anne Lister was one of only two colleges which were made available by the university to accept returner students for the 2022-2023 academic year.[9]

Student life[edit]

Student representation[edit]

The interests of Anne Lister students are represented by the College Student Association. They are responsible for organising college-based Freshers Week and Refreshers Week events, as well as events throughout the year. Those on committee are elected annually by the students.[3]

The 2023 CSA Executive Committee is:

  • President - Zara Hayes
  • Treasurer - Isabella maziano
  • VP for Events - Michael Campbell
  • VP for Community and Wellbeing - Hedia Ching
  • VP for Sport - Sophia Bolton

The presidents of the CSA committee are:

  • 2022 - Harleen Dhillon

Events[edit]

Buildings and Services[edit]

The college is self-catered, with students having access to flat kitchens and a communal kitchen.[10] There is a weekly brunch held in the dining area connected to the communal kitchen.[11] The Hub is the main social space at the college.[6]
