Adidas Boost Technology

Boost Technology is a technological footwear advancement that was created and incorporated by Adidas Design Company onto the midsoles of many of the brand's signature shoe models. The technology was first introduced in 2013 with the EnergyBOOST shoe model, engineered to maximize both athletic performance and comfort. The BOOST innovation revolves around the cushioning material that provides one of the highest energy returns in the shoe industry.

Adidas partnered with BASF, the worlds leading chemical company, to design a midsole system that consists of Thermoplastic Polyurethane(TPU), a solid granular material.

TPU many positive characteristics that make it suitable as a mid-sole component, like:

  • high abrasion resistance
  • high shear strength
  • high elasticity
  • good constancy at various temperatures

The TPU is blown up and reshaped into thousands of pea-sized foam capsules that make up the shoe's unique midsole. In order to shape it, the TPU is compressed into tightly packed sole nuggets that provide the unique ability to instantly bounce back to its original shape, creating a midsole with good shock absorption.[1]

The footwear tech withstood various temperature-sensitive tests that demonstrated the temperature resistance, performing better than the common EVA, ethylene-vinyl acetate, material.[2] The test revealed that the BOOST foam is three times more temperature-resistant than standard EVA material in temperatures ranging from +40 to -20 degrees Celsius.

The introduction of Boost technology was a huge innovation on technology-driven footwear for Adidas. BOOST began as a new technology with the purpose of creating a more consistent and comfortable running shoe.

The BOOST midsole tech was designed to do well in athletics as well as look stylish and fit comfortably for everyday wear[3]. BOOST provides the highest energy return in any running sneaker as well as soft cushioning and great durability that was better compared to sneakers at the time. [4] The technology now sees use in many major sports.

The midsole tech has evolved passed being used for running shoes and is now used throughout the sports industry. It is used for basketball sneakers and football cleats. The look of the shoe has also changed to become a popular choice of lifestyle sneakers, and even some of the brand's classics like the Superstar"[4] The Crazylight BOOST, which was designed for basketball, feature 100 percent heel-to-toe BOOST cushioning. These shoes have been worn by NBA stars James Harden, Jeremy Lin, and Kyle Lowry.[5]  

BOOST was also popularized by the well-known YEEZY line up of lifestyle shoes, as it was incorporated into all the YEEZY shoes. The Adidas YEEZY shoes are an official collaboration between Adidas and Kanye West, one of the most influential Hip-Hop artists and fashion icon. He made a fashion statement with the YEEZY BOOST line up and set it as a must-have iconic shoe model.

BOOST began as a new technology with the purpose of creating a more consistent and comfortable running shoe.

The first product containing Boost technology was the Adidas Energyboost in 2013.It was constructed with an elastic polyurethane Techfit and had the experimental BOOST midsole The new technology was considered a revolutionary cushioning system.

The following year, Adidas quickly demonstrated its progression with the PureBOOST and made a statement to those keen on its stylistic attributes, making it into a true hybrid sneaker design. The latest model to come out of the series was the UltraBOOST, which was launched in 2015. It combined a full-length BOOST midsole along with a Primeknit constructed upper.[2]

Adidas along with BASF figured out a way to dye the BOOST midsole into a black compact sole without changing the characteristics of the BOOST tech. The shoe has now been able to be introduced in different colorways that appeal to many 'sneaker heads'.

Adidas continues to add onto it's collection of shoes that have popularized the BOOST tech. The Adidas NMD's have become an iconic sneaker that is popular worldwide. It added two of adidas most popular technologies, PrimeKnit and BOOST, and is not designed for running or basketball but more street wear.[6]
