NUS School of Computing is a faculty within the National University of Singapore (NUS). The School was established in 1998, although its history reaches back for another two decades, first to when it was the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS) in the Faculty of Science, and before that, as the Department of Computer Science in the Singapore University-Nanyang University Joint Campus days. The School is governed by an Executive Committee, which takes advice from an Industry Advisory Committee [1]. Its current dean is Professor Ooi Beng Chin .[2]
In terms of affiliation, NUS School of Computing enjoys a close working relationship with its alumni, represented by the Computer and Information Science Alumni Association (CISAA)[3]. The student body of the School is represented by NUS Students' Computing Club [4], whose precursor was the Computer Science Society.
History[edit]
Historically, NUS School of Computing was the Department of Computer Science in the Singapore University-Nanyang University Joint Campus days. It then became the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS) within the National University of Singapore following. It became a fully fledged faculty -- the School of Computing -- on 1 July 1998, comprising two departments, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Systems. The School, through its predecessor departments, is the earliest hub of Computing learning at university level in Singapore. It has grown in tandem with the nation's need for Computing expertise, with a development path that parallels the nation's IT development blueprint.
The expansion of the School has also created a need for additional space over the years. This has brought about the building of DISCS' first permanent home at S15 on Kent Ridge Campus [5] in 1984, with two new buildings added in later years: S16 in 1992 and S17 in 1998. S17 was soon renamed SoC1 as DISCS became the fully fledged faculty named School of Computing (SoC) on 1 July 1998. The expansion of the School continues in the years that followed, culminating into the move of the SoC hub[6] to the COM1 cluster in July 2007.
Present[edit]
NUS School of Computing has an academic staff strength of about 200 [7], with staff members trained in leading universities worldwide, from Oxbridge to the Ivy League.
SoC has a fine track record in grooming leaders for the digital economy since its early days as the only university department in Singapore that produced computing talent for the workforce. They include chief executives and technology architects of multinationals and government agencies [8].
The School offers six undergraduate programmes plus a number of double and concurrent degree programmes [9], offered in conjunction with other faculties in NUS as well as overseas partners. At graduate level, it offers Master degree programmes by coursework [10], and PhD studies in various areas of Computer Science and Information Systems [11].

Special Programme[edit]
Advanced Technology Attachment Programme[edit]
The Advanced Technology Attachment Programme (ATAP) is a premium industrial attachment programme placing the better among our students in leading organisations for the benefit of both. It is offered twice a year, each for a period of six months: January to June, and May to November. Students’ progress on projects will be monitored during attachment, and their performance will be assessed at the end of the attachment, based on the interim and final project reports.[14]
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme[edit]
UROP provides a unique opportunity for bright undergraduates to undertake research work under the supervision of experienced researchers. Through this apprenticeship in research, students learn to formulate questions, to evaluate claims and to do in-depth study in a topic in order to solve a problem whose solution is not previously known. In addition to achieving competence, many students find research so exhilarating that they continue on to doing postgraduate studies and research as a career.[15]

PhD Programmes[edit]
The Graduate Programme (GP)/Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is a research-based programme and is available in the following departments in the School of Computing:
Financial assistance in the form of a Research Scholarship is offered to all full-time students who meet the minimum criteria on a competitive basis. The research scholarship carries monthly emoluments, plus full tuition fee subsidy.
Candidates with good undergraduate degrees in Computer Science or Information Systems are in fact invited to apply for research scholarships for pursuing full-time PhD programmes by research with the School. They are tenable for one year in the first instance and renewable annually for up to four years for PhD candidates, subject to satisfactory performance. Each scholarship holder will receive a non-taxable monthly allowance of S$2,000 (for international students) and S$2,300 (Singapore Citizens). Graduate students who passed their PhD Qualifying Examination will be awarded an additional top-up of S$500 per month during their PhD candidature. Other types of scholarships are also available, and students may also apply for a loan that covers up to 90% their fees[16] and loans [16].
Master of Computing (by coursework)[edit]
The Master of Computing programme is a comprehensive and challenging graduate programme with area specialisations. It encompasses latest research findings, both applied and fundamental. The programme also provides advanced and in-depth knowledge of IT to prepare the students for challenges in IT career. The programme may be taken full-time or part-time. Most level 5000 and 6000 modules are conducted in the evenings.[17]
NUS Students’ Computing Club[edit]
NUS Students' Computing Club, or simply CompClub, is the faculty club for all undergraduates in NUS School of Computing. Headed by a Management Committee that is elected by the student body for a one-year term, CompClub champions the interest and welfare of Computing students, serving as a conduit of student feedback to the School, and working to enhance interactions between students and staff.
CISAA[edit]
The Computer and Information Science Alumni Association (CISAA) was formed in 1989, primarily to promote the interests of its members and to provide interaction among members, the alma mater, and industry. It draws its members from the alumni of SoC or its predecessor the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS). Since its inception, CISAA has strived through the years to provide the graduates of DISCS and SoC with many services and benefits, organising talks and networking opportunities for SoC/DISCS alumni. Events[edit]
In 2008, NUS School of Computing celebrates its 10th year as a faculty and 33 years since its founding as university department. It launched its commemorative celebratory events on 17 April 2008 with an in-house event that comprised the official opening of the NUS Students' Computing Club Lounge and the launch of the students game server [18], culminating into the SoC 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner on 23 August 2008 (ref announcement on SoC 10th anniversary dinner webpage (not ready yet).
