Kike Tropical Fruits Factory (KTFF), is a privately-owned fruit processing installation in Nakasongola District in Uganda.[2]

The factory is located in Kakooge Town, Kakooge Parish, Kakooge Subcounty, Nakasongola District, in the Central Region of Uganda.[3]

Kakooge is located approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of the town of Nakasongola, the district headquarters.[4] This is approximately 89 kilometres (55 mi) north of the city of Kampala, the capital of Uganda.[5] The geographical location of the factory is 01°03'04.0"N, 32°27'52.0"E (Latitude:1.051111; Longitude:32.464444).[6]

Overview[edit]

Sometime in the 2010s president Yoweri Museveni met Olive Mugabe, a Ugandan national who at that time lived in the diaspora in Austria, in Central Europe. She expressed the desire to return to Uganda and contribute to the economic development of her homeland. Museveni advised her to critically study the needs and requirements of the Austrian market, then determine what she could produce in Uganda to satisfy that market.[1]

She worked with her brother who is resident in Uganda and started Keki Tropical Fruits Limited, a Ugandan company that purchases tropical fruits (pineapples, mangoes and passionfruit), then processes the fruit at this factory, into concentrate, juice, and pulp. The fruit is sourced from various Ugandan districts, including Luweero, Masaka and surrounding areas. Others include West Nile sub-region, Uganda's Northern Region and Bukedi sub-region. The factory's products are marketed locally and internationally, particularly to the European Union.[7]

Ownership[edit]

The Kike Tropical Fruits factory is owned by Kike Tropical Fruits Limited, a Ugandan company owned by Francis Mugabe and members of his family. Olive Mugabe and Francis Mugabe are siblings. She serves as the Director of Marketing and Research at the company and factory. The company employs about 500 people in 2023.[7]

Production[edit]

The present factory was established in 2019. As of November 2023, it under expansion to try to meet market demands, with partial funding from Uganda Development Bank. The factory has capacity of 1,000 metric tonnes of fresh fruit each season, sourced from more than 1,000 registered farmers supplying fruit to the factory. At that time the factory was only able to meet 30 percent of the available local market.[7][8]
