Art painted under guidance of Srila Narayana Maharaja:

Srimati Syamarani didi (aka Jadurani dasi), the famous painter disciple of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who painted many of the pictures adorning Srila Prabhupada's books, also painted many famous, widely distributed and esoteric devotional pictures under Srila Narayana Maharaja's direct guidance - the famous "Seva Kunja" painting on page xliv (44) (between the Introduction and Chapter One) came about when he asked her "Can you paint my heart?"

Some of her paintings inspired and guided by Srila Narayana Maharaja may be viewed on her webpage, Bhakti Art.

She drew line drawings for Srila Narayana Maharaja's books, including "Gita Govinda" (download free e-book here) and some of her most beautiful paintings may be seen there in high resolution, on pages xli-xliv (41-44), again between the Introduction and Chapter 1. This book is a masterpiece in terms of literature, poetry, art and religion, written in Sanskrit by the classical poet Jayadeva and translated first into Hindi, then into English with the assistance of his disciples, by Srila B.V. Narayana Maharaja.

She also supervised the painting of extraordinary dioramas at Sri Giridhari Gaudiya Math, Govardhana, depicting the Dasavataras and pastimes of Radha, Krishna and the Gopis.

Here is just one example of a preaching programme held in India, attended by several thousand visitors -
Noida (nr. Delhi), 2004

Preaching around the World:

Srila B.V. Narayana Maharaja first left India for the West in May 1996, first travelling to Holland, then the U.K., then to the U.S.A. He subsequently toured the globe at least twice every year (once west, once east, from India), every year until 2010, when his travel was curtailed by ill health. He left this world that year, just before his 90th birthday - Announcement, with 165 responses of condolence.

Here is his travel schedule in that year (2010), his final year on Earth, and his most frail:

South Africa - January 4th-10th, 2010
Sao Paulo, Brazil - January 12th-17th, 2010
Mauritius - February 12th, 2010
Navadwipa, India - February 22th-28th, 2010
Delhi, Govardhana, Mathura - March 5th-25th, 2010
Badger, California - June 11th-15th, 2010
Marina di Massa, Italy - July 1st-7th, 2010
Russia - August 8th-12th 2010

Srila Narayana Maharaja then returned to India, where he fell ill, and was diagnosed with late-stage (untreatable) bowel cancer - (ISKCON announcement). This prevented him from leaving India again, although he did still attend the Vraja-Mandala Parikrama festival, despite being gravely ill.

This was his travel schedule in his last year, when he was very elderly & somewhat frail, and became terminally ill. He had travelled more vigorously and extensively than this throughout the world since the year 1996, at which time the author met him in Watford, UK, at Gurudeva's first festival in Britain, his second in the world outside India.

Srila Narayana Maharaja's Tour Reports 2003-2010 are available online here, with photographs.
Here are many of his Transcribed Lectures from 1996-2010 (and some from earlier).

Facebook campaign group:

As of August 27th, 2012, there is a Facebook group, "Re-instate Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja's Wikipedia Page!", with over 1300 members within 3 days of its creation, petitioning for the undeletion, or re-writing and retention, of a Wikipedia entry for this Vaisnava saint.

"The sannyasi has no such thing as teaching credentials or 'academic vitae'. So they can simply decide on the basis of my books and teachings." Quote from Swami Prabhupada. Please judge Srila Narayana Maharaja on his books & lectures. Like Srila Prabhupada's teachings, anyone who reads them cannot fail to miss their authenticity, their scholarship, and their beauty.

There are many such persons, and one only has to run a Google search on the name "Narayana Maharaja" to find websites expressing disdain or even hate for this saintly gentleman, well-wisher of all.

Wikipedia pages about Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja, Bhaktivedanta Vamana Maharaja and several other Gaudiya Math Gurus have been deleted, such as Sri Bhakti Raksaka Sridhar Maharaja, Bhakti Vallabha Tirtha Maharaja, Swami B. A. Paramadvaiti, Bhakti Vaibhava Puri Goswami, as have Gaudiya Math branches, such as Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti, Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mission, &c. The pages for Gaudiya Math and Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Maharaja have also been mercilessly pruned from the originals written by well-wishers, by the same culprit(s), in an attempt to minimise their fame and online coverage.

This has been a deliberate campaign by a small minority of antagonistic so-called "devotee" editors to remove all mention of any other institution than ISKCON. This is sectarian, and against the Wikipedia principles of "good faith" and preserving historicity. Several notable modern saints and acaryas have been deleted in this way by these persons, who know full well they are notable - that is the reason for their antipathy! - yet they disingenuously use the notability criterion to persuade the Wikipedia community, who are not part of the Hare Krsna family and thus unaware of the contribution these Swamis have made, to remove them from the annals of history. Most of these pages has been (repeatedly) put up for deletion by one single editor, who is part of a small group of ISKCON devotees hostile to the Gaudiya Math. In short, numerous biographical pages about famous modern Gaudiya Vaisnava saints, crafted with great effort & devotion by their followers, have been single-handedly destroyed by this person, whom one can only consider therefore as a vandal, and an enemy of truth, with his own politically motivated agenda.

Summary & Conclusion:

Our Guru and his achievements speak for themselves - they do not require third-party scholars to have written about them, although they are certainly remarkable enough to be worth documenting and considering.
I summarise them below:

  • over 150 books written, translated and published in at least 6 languages (English, Hindi, Bengali, German, Spanish, Chinese), plus more in French, Portuguese, Russian etc. for which I do not yet have online links)
  • published Hindi magazine from the 1950's to the present day, and English magazine from 1996 - present.

25 editions in each language, spanning 4 different decades, have been provided herewith.

  • filmed at least 4000 times, these videos all available online and supplied on this page.
  • recorded at least 7000 times, this audio also all available online and supplied herewith.
  • classes transcribed since 1996 (and some from before then, recorded by the earlier western disciples) - listed on sites such as Purebhakti.com and BVML.org - links supplied above.
  • appeared on MTV, with famous musician and follower Crispian Mills.
  • interviewed by New Zealand newspaper and Texas radio station (both cited above), as well as countless appearances in newspapers in the Mathura area, where he was a much loved community leader for over 5 decades. Devotees in that area have kept scrapbooks of such articles, but they are not available to me in England. I can indicate one Hindi article, "Sri Krsna ki lilaon me otprot hue videshi bhakt" ("Foreign devotees take part in drama about Krsna") "Govardhan ke Giridhari Gaudiya Math me Sri Krsna lila me bhav-vibhor videshi bhakt" - "In Govardhan's Giridhari Gaudiya Math [Gurudeva's flagship temple in the Mathura area] foreign devotees perform Krsna lila (play), full of emotion" - quite a compliment! This very kindly written article appeared in the Kalpataru Express Newspaper, November 4th 2011. The author of this Wiki entry starred in that play, playing the arrogant King of Heaven, Indra, being humbled by Lord Krishna, aged only 7 at the time. Since every year such plays took place in November at this festival, as well as countless other religious, cultural & festive activities all year round, how many times do you think Srila Narayana Maharaja and his devotees appeared in the local newspapers in India from 1950-2010? Although their archiving may not always be up to western standards, in a way it does not need to be, because Bhakti is a living tradition still practised, year in & out, as it has been for millennia.
  • honoured in India, America and England by local dignitaries and religious leaders (Yuga-Acarya, Cultural Ambassador and Faith Ambassador, respectively)
  • was a celibate monk (sannyasi) of unblemished reputation, from the year 1952 until 2010, almost 60 years.
  • travelled the globe almost continuously from 1996-2010, at the advanced age of 75-89, preaching and inspiring his disciples, followers, well-wishers and all who came to him.
  • arranged festivals in India in Autumn & Spring to accommodate up to 2,500 and 20,000 guests, respectively, for several decades. He himself participated in those festivals from the year 1947 until 2010 - over 60 years!
  • was hosted at festivals around the world in more than 25 different countries (see full tour list, above) by hundreds & thousands of enthusiastic disciples. Written, audio and video records of these festivals are available in overflowing abundance via the many links supplied on this page, which make up a fraction of those in existence.
  • inspired & guided some of the most beautiful spiritual art yet to be generated by the Bhakti school (see above).
  • was photographed 1000's of times, and I have included online links to well over 1000 photos of him on this page (500 in 2 Facebook albums, and at least 1000 pictures on his BVML.org page). Often these photographs show him surrounded by dozens or hundreds of dedicated followers, and always show him engaged in some activity of religious merit, such as preaching, chanting, etc.
  • was respected by the Vaisnava umbrella group WVA / VVRS (World Vaisnava Association) and other senior famous sannyasi acaryas, such as Bhakti Vallabha Tirtha Maharaja, Bhakti Pramoda Puri Maharaja, etc. Pictures of them together available online, as well as their recommendations of him as a teacher of rasa & tattva.

In short, our Guru Maharaja, Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Goswami was a most notable, in fact extra-ordinary individual who dedicated his life to the service of his Guru, godbrothers and disciples in the branch of the Gaudiya Math (literally, 'Bengali monastery') to which he belonged. He counselled many thousands of people who came to seek his advice and his darshan (audience), meeting dozens or hundreds on a daily basis, with endless patience. He deserves his honorary title "Maharaja" (great king) given to sannyasis, because he was indeed like a monarch (acarya), surrounded by noblemen (monks) and with a constant stream of citizens (pilgrims and visitors) coming to see him, as is the tradition in India. Yet he lived humbly and simply, occupying a single room in the temple, eating frugally, and never wearing any garments other than the saffron robes befitting a Hindu monk, or swami.

His notability has been proven herein beyond shadow of a doubt. When a certain few ill-intentioned persons repeatedly request his deletion from mention for their own selfish, misguided reasons, we implore the level-headed & even-handed senior editors of Wikipedia to oppose the futile attempt to corrupt & conceal history, and sanction them if they do not desist from harassing us and vandalising & destroying our labours of love, viz. a page to honour our Spiritual Leader.

We thank you for your kind attention and assistance in this regard.
Hari bol! In Peace and Love of God, humble servants,
Syama dasa (UK), Nityananda dasa, Syama dasa (US) and other members of the International Pure Bhakti Yoga Society (IPBYS), formerly Gaudiya Vaisnava Society/Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti (GVS). Hare Krishna!
