Spring Awakening Music Festival is an electronic music festival that takes place in Chicago Illinois. The Bud Light Platinum sponsored festival took place in the pulse of the city, Soldier Field. Which has now been moved to Jefferson Park.  For one weekend the home of the Chicago Bears is renovated for one the biggest midwest music festivals. The legends say that Chicago is the home of house music with many clubs, venues, and concert halls that have been in the scene for years. As the Midwest increases its tastes of the sub-genres in EDM, Spring Awakening Music Festival (SAMF) is the place to be for a festival season kick off. [1]

History[edit]

Spring Awakening was originally founded as a concert series in 2008. The event eventually outgrew the theater, and in 2012 SAMF was turned into a two-day outdoor festival at Soldier Field by the Chicago-based promoting agency React Presents.  In 2013,Spring Awakening Music Festival expanded to three days with over 90,000 people in attendance. SAMF has been held either the second or third weekend of June[2] Over the years, the Festival has become increasingly popular due to the large fan base of Electronic Dance Music near the Chicago-land area. As people now come from across the globe just to attend the Festival, there are discussed rumors that the Festival could be extending onwards towards many other states.[3]

2012[edit]

SAMF was made into a two day festival held on June 16-17 in Soldier Field.

The festival was initially announced to occupy the ‘Stadium Green’ surrounding Soldier Field, but after overwhelming demand, the festival moved the mainstage inside of the stadium to the north end zone of Soldier Field. Over 50,000 people attended Spring Awakening Music festival 2012. [4]

Some of the main performers included Skrillex, Afrojack, Diplo, A-Track, Benny Benassi, Dillon Francis, Moby, Flux Pavilion, Hardwell, Datsik, Carlcox, Morgan Page and more. [5]

The news comes in wake of making sure that safety is the number one priority for the fans, artists and staff. An official spokesperson of SAMF said that they “believe the festival is an experience for adults. This difficult decision was made to promote safety amongst our fans and ensure the best experience for our attendees and future attendees.[12]

A 19-year-old man died Sunday after attending a weekend music festival at Soldier Field. Steve Vongkoth death is thought to be drug-related.[13]

2016[edit]

This year the festival will be held June 10-12.

SAMF was supposed to be moved away from its original  “home” (Soldier Field) to Jefferson Park. The new venue will give SAMF a bit more room to work with and attendees will be able to enjoy SIX stages (5 in 2015), fireworks displays, interactive art installations and carnival rides including a ferris wheel in honor of the first ever ferris wheel that was debuted on the same very grounds. Jackson Park is just steps away from the Museum of Science and Industry and The University of Chicago. [14] The festival moved because of the Copa América soccer tournament.[15]
