Usman Shehu Bawa, also known as Shehu ABG (Born on 17 April, 1973) is a Nigerian politician, businessman and a member of Nigeria's House of Representatives. He is a member of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Early Life[edit]

Usman Bawa was born and raised in Kaduna, Nigeria, into the family of Alhaji (Dr.) Bawa Garba (Founder of ABG Group of Companies). He had his early and secondary education both in Kaduna before moving to Zaria to further his study.

Education[edit]

Usman attended Kaduna Polytechnic Demonstration Primary School before transferring and completing his primary education at Kaduna Capital School. He had his secondary education at Essence International School where he graduated in 1993.He later proceeded for his higher education and bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Geography at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria in 1999.

Education[edit]

Usman began his early professional career in the communications industry by working with ABG Communications Ltd – a family company that pioneered both cable satellite TV in Nigeria and private broadcast in Africa. After a spell at the communications company, he moved on to start his own companies – GSM.COM Ltd in order to explore the newly introduced GSM technology into the Nigerian telecommunications industry and Top Desk International Ltd for various contracts, project development and consultancy. He later became the General Manager of Agric Supermarket Ltd, a company he co-founded that was doing multi-billion Naira projects in the Nigeria’s Agriculture industry.

Usman resigned from all his business positions in 2011 so as to fully participate in politics.

Politics[edit]

Usman is a member of the newly registered major opposition political party in Nigeria, All Progressives Congress (APC). Though Usman had previously participated in politics where he unsuccessfully ran for the office of Member, House of Representatives of Kaduna North Federal Constituency under the former All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2007, before joining Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to form a new party, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) on which platform he ran and won his present seat as Member, House of Representatives representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in 2011.

Usman was subsequently appointed Deputy Chairman Committee on Communications of the House of Representatives with oversight on the Federal Ministry of Communications Technology and its Parastatals, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), etc. Since his assumption of position as the Deputy Chairman of the Communications Committee, Usman has been a vocal voice on national issues involving both private and public sector organizations within the communications industry. Usman was Acting Chairman of the Communications Committee in 2011 and later chaired the Sub-Committee for the NCC Probe for SIM Card Registration. Usman is also member in the following committees: Gas Resources, Navy, Diaspora, Banking & Currency, Electoral Matters, Legislative Compliance, Health and Solid Minerals Development.

Personal life[edit]

Usman is married with children (two girls and two boys).
