History[edit]

The Köhlbrand emerged between the 14th and 15th centuries when after a storm the Gorieswerder, an island in the middle of the river, was separated into many islands. Charcoal was burnt on its banks by local charcoal burners and then sold to the sailors. This led to the river's name because charcoal in German is Holzköhle.
