Families[edit]

(9g) Thomas Cole[edit]

Cole Gen. 114-5[39]; Essex Probate Records:314-5; Essex Antiquarian:160-164;

Thomas Cole was born roughly 1610, d. 1679, and m. roughly 1640 Ann _______, b. roughly 1615, d. 1680. Thomas is first of record in 1649[/50?] when recorded as a husbandman in Salem, Mass. He can not be positively identified as any of the three Thomas Coles who had arrived in New England by 1640. Thomas bought a house and land at Marblehead Neck on 14 Feb 1665[/6?] from Philip Cromwell (Cutter). His will was dated 25 Dec 1678 and proved in Salem Court 27:4m:1679 (27 June 1679), leaving his entire estate to his wife Ann, and making her sole executrix. His will mentions "my children" but names none of them. His inventory was taken 20 April 1679, amounting to 99 pounds with about 12 pounds of debt. The inventory was attested in Salem court 27:4:1679 (same day as will probate) by the two appraisers, Ann, executrix, being sick. Ann's will was made 1 Nov 1679 and proved 2 May 1681, naming her two sons, Abraham and John, with the former executor. There must have been something about the Coles that kept them out of the mainstream of Puritan life, as the wives of both of Thomas's surviving sons were accused of witchcraft in 1692, though both were later acquitted. Children:

  • Abraham, eldest son, b. say 1640, d. 1715, m. Salem 11 June 1670 (VR) Sarah DAVIS. Abraham was one of the Salem inhabitants who protested against imposts in 1668. He was a tailor. "Savage says that he removed to Hampton, and there took the freeman's oath in 1678, and afterwards returned to Salem." (Gen:114) In 1685 Abraham built a house in Salem on land that came from his father through his mother's will. Upon his death, the house was split between his two sons Samuel and Thomas, and it remained standing until 1846 when it was razed so that the street could be widened. In 1692 Sarah was accused of witchcraft and imprisoned, but not brought to trial. She was freed on bail 14 Jan 1693[1692/3?]. Abraham left a will that was proved 31 Dec 1715, and his widow Sarah's will was dated 2 July 1717 (Cutter). They had five known children born from May 1670 [sic] 1687, per the genealogy, but Cutter gives them eight. A web source, citing Find-a-grave, gives the following on Sarah: b. Reading, Mass. 1 Oct 1651, daughter of George Davis and Sarah Clark; she and Abraham had seven children born Salem from 1671 to 1687.
  • John, b. say 1642, m. (1) 1667 Mary KNIGHT; (2) Sarah ALSBEE.

Many early genealogists, such as Pope and Savage, make this Thomas Cole of Salem the same as the Thomas Cole enrolled at Southampton on 26 March 1634 as a passenger for New England on the Mary and John. Anderson, in the Great Migration series (2:157) writes, "Perley finds [this] Thomas Cole in Salem as early as 1642 [Perley 2:134], but even an eight-year gap [between 1634 and 1642] is too great too [sic] allow this identification, and we must conclude that the 1634 passenger never arrived in New England, or died soon after arrival, or landed and soon returned to England." With that said, here are some snipets that may or may not pertain to this Thomas Cole: (1) at St Peter Upon Cornhill in the City of London, Thomas Cole, minister at Kent (or Bent), was married to Anne Andrews on 11 June 1632; (2) in Saco (now Maine), Thomas Cole was an early tenant of a Mr. Vines, on the same farm that was once occupied by Mr. Samuel Andrews. Also, on 15 Dec 1639, a John _______, grandson of Thomas Cole, "which came out of New England," was baptized in Navestock, Essex, England, aged 3 years (GDMNH:157); (3) this family had a connection with Hampton (NH), as Abraham lived there for a while and was made freeman there in 1678 (per Savage). William Cole (c.1574-1662) was of Hampton, and had first come to Exeter with Wheelwright, and then to Hampton where he died, childless (GDMNH:157). William's will was apparently probated in Salem, Mass., the home of subject Thomas Cole.

(8g) John Cole, Sr.[edit]

Cole Gen:115-117; Vital records of Salem, Lynn, and Bradford, Mass.; TAG 41(1965):80-83 (Alsebee family)

John, the son of Thomas and Ann Cole, was born say 1642, d. Lynn, Mass. 8 Oct 1703 (VR, as John Coall, sr.), m. (1) Salem 28 May 1667 (VR) Mary KNIGHT, d. by 1675; (2) Sarah ASLEBEE/ASLET, b. c. 1659, d. Bradford, Mass. 1 Jan 1740[/1] in 82nd year (GR1) (VR as Sarah Cool), daughter of John Aslebee and Rebecca Ayer. John grew up in Salem, but about 1675 moved to Malden, and then about 1684 to Lynn, where he died. He was a cooper. His second wife, Sarah, was tried for witchcraft at Charlestown and acquitted 1 Feb 1693[1692/3?]. John's will was dated 5 Oct 1703, but was not proved as it had but two witnesses. Administration of his estate, therefore, was granted to his eldest son John on 5 Dec 1703. Administration of the estate of widow Sarah Cole of Bradford, Mass. was given to her son Samuel Cole on 25 May 1741. Sarah has an extant gravestone in the Ancient Burying Ground in Bradford; her surname is given as "Cool". Children of John and Mary: [40]

  • John, b. Salem 18 May 1668 (VR), m. Mary EATON (see below).
  • Thomas, b. Salem Nov 1669 (VR), d. Salem 1669 (VR)
  • Mary, b. Salem 1:7:1671 (1 Sep 1671) (VR), living in 1716 (final accounting of her father's estate) as Mary Cole.
  • Hannah, b. Salem 12:10:1674 (12 Dec 1674) (VR), living in 1716 as Hannah Cole.

Children of John and Sarah:

  • Samuel, b. Lynn 27 Dec 1687 (VR), d. Boxford 20 Jan 1765, m. (int. Lynn 3 May 1712, as Samuell Coal and Suzana Brown) Susanna BROWNE, b. Lynn 6 March 1689/90, d. Boxford 20 July 1785, aged 95 (VR), daughter of Cornelius Browne, Jr. and Susanna Story. The will of Samuel Cole of Boxford was dated 13 Aug 1762 and proved 15 April 1765. They had five known children bapt. at Bradford. See Nicholas Browne family, below.
  • Anna, b. Lynn 5 Aug 1690 (VR), d. Bradford 30 Sep 1746 in 56th year, m. (1) (int. Lynn 9 June and int. Andover 30 June 1716) Josiah SESSIONS, b. Andover 2 May 1684, d. Bradford 30 Dec 1724, aged 41, son of Alexander Sessions and Elizabeth Spofford; m. (2) Bradford 18 Feb 1730 Samuel RUNNELS, d. Boxford c. Jan 1789. Anna was appointed administratrix of the extate of Josiah Sessions on 15 Feb 1724/5. Inventory on 2 Sep 1725 totaled 737 pounds. On 2 Feb 1789 a committee was appointed to divide the estate of Samuel Runnels late of Boxford.

(7g) John Cole, Jr.[edit]

John Cole, the son of John Cole and Mary Knight, was b. Salem, Mass. 18 May 1668, d. Boxford, Mass. 5 Feb 1736/7 "very suddenly", and m. Reading, Mass. 24 Dec 1691 Mary EATON, b. Reading 1 May 1672, d. Boxford 7 Oct 1746, aged 78 [sic], the daughter of Daniel and Mary Eaton. He moved from Salem to Reading, then about 1700 to Lynn, then in 1721 to Boxford where he resided in the West Parish. He was a tailor. He appears on tax lists there from 1721 to 1736, and was surveyor of highways in 1726. The bond of administration for his estate was given to Jonathan Cole, Thomas Peabody, and Thomas Howsy on 4 July 1737. His widow Mary refused administration on 28 July 1737. Inventory was dated 5 Sep 1737. John and Mary are almost certainly buried in the Brookside Cemetery in West Boxford since that is where they lived, and their deaths were recorded in the Second Congregational Church there. Children, first four b. Reading, remainder b. Lynn, Mass.: [41]

  • Mary, b. 24 July 1693, was non compos mentis and never married. She lived to an old age in Oxford according to the Cole genealogy. A bond of guardianship for her was dated 4 Sep 1738 and signed by Ebenezer Sherwin, Thomas Peabody, and Jonathan Cole. An account of guardianship and an inventory of her estate were dated 21 May 1744, but it is not known how much longer she lived after this date.
  • Martha, b. 29 March 1695, d. Reading 14 Aug 1714
  • Jonathan, b. 23 April 1698, d. young
  • Jonathan, b. 30 Sep 1699, m. (1) Judith BROWN; m. (2) Sarah (_______) Holt (see below).
  • Daniel, b. 20 June 1703 (Daniell Coall, s. John, jr. and Mary, June 20, 1703--Lynn VR), d. 1774, m. c. 1731 Anne _________, b. 1709, d. Concord, MA 20 June 1794, aged 85. Daniel moved to Boxford with his parents in 1721, and appears on the tax list there in 1724 and 1725. He thereafter moved to Concord, Mass., where he was likely married, and where the births of six children were recorded from 1732 to 1748. Daniel's will was proved 10 Jan 1775, he being called of Concord. Ann has a FAG memorial in South Burial Place in Concord, but likely has no extant grave marker. Their oldest child, Mary, is buried in the Old Hill Burial Ground in Concord, and Daniel may be either there or in the South Burial Place. [42]
  • Hepzibah, b. c. 1705, d. Dunstable, Mass. 1 April 1756, m. Boxford 21 Sep 1726 Ebenezer SHERWIN, b. Boxford 5 Jan 1705/6, d. Dunstable c. 1764, the son of Ebenezer Sherwin and Susannah Howlett. Hepzibah and Ebenezer had eleven known children, the first eight of whom were born in Boxford. They moved to Dunstable in 1747. The administrators petition concerning the estate of Ebenezer Sherwin was dated 5 March 1764. [43]
  • Hannah, b. c. 1707, d. 10 March 1781, perhaps in Windsor, CT, m. Boxford 19 Dec 1727 Daniel EATON, b. Tolland, CT 24 July 1707, the son of Daniel Eaton and Abigail Hubbard. Hannah and Daniel had five known children born 1729 to 1740. FAG memorials have been created for Hannah and Daniel, without a cemetery. [44]

(6g) Jonathan Cole[edit]

Jonathan Cole was b. Reading, Mass. 30 Sep 1699, d. Westmoreland, NH 6 April 1780, the son of John Cole and Mary Eaton of Salem and Reading, Mass. An earlier son of this couple named Jonathan was born in Reading on 23 April 1698, and must have died young. Jonathan was married in Boxford, Mass. on 8 April 1724 to Judith (called Judah) BROWN, b. Reading 10 Nov 1700, d. Harvard, Mass. 1 Nov 1746, the daughter of Cornelius Brown and Susanna (Story) Clark. Jonathan m. (2) Harvard, MA 24 June 1747 Sarah Holt. I suspect that Sarah was the widow of Uriah Holt (1702-1741) who died in Lancaster, Mass. If so, then she is probably the Sarah Wright, b. Andover, Mass. 20 Mar 1696, daughter of Walter Wright and Elizabeth Sadie, who m. in Andover 28 Sep 1725 Uriah Holt. Judith is buried in the Harvard Cemetery with several of her children and near her brother, Caleb Brown, and Jonathan is buried in the Canoe Meadow Cem., Westmoreland, NH. Children of Jonathan and Judith, all likely born in Boxford where the family lived, but the earlier children were baptized in neighboring Bradford: [45]

  • Jonathan, bapt. Bradford 17 Jan 1724/5, d. Bradford, Mass. 29 July 1727, aged 3 (GR1) (VR as Jonathan Cool).
  • Martha, b. 3 Nov 1726, bapt. Bradford 6 Nov 1726, d. 23 Nov 1746, aged 20y 20d, bur. Harvard Cem. [46]
  • Judith, bapt. Bradford 24 Nov 1728, likely died young. The Cole genealogy says she d. Harvard Oct 1746, but this appears to be in error (and likely refers to her mother), as a later Judith was bapt. 1735[/6?].
  • Jonathan, bapt. Bradford 14 Feb 1731[/2?], d. Westmoreland 3 Sep 1813, aged 83, m. Harvard 1 May 1751 Edith DAVIS, b. 29 Sep 1728, d. 8 Feb 1805, the daughter of Amos Davis and Elizabeth Chapman. Jonathan was one of the early settlers of Westmoreland, NH, and a grantee of the 1752 charter there. He and his wife are buried in the Canoe Meadow Cem. there. [47]
  • Abijah, bapt. Bradford 11 March 1733[/4?], m. Sarah KENT. [48]
  • Judith, bapt. Bradford 23 Feb 1735[/6?]. She is almost certainly the Judith Cole who m. (1) Harvard 14 June 1753 Jonathan SYMONDS, b. 1716, d. Harvard 24 Jan 1770 in his 55th year; and m. (2) Simon DABY, b. 1715, d. 18 Dec 1802 in his 88th year. Judith and both husbands are buried in the Harvard Cemetery. [49]
  • Jedediah, b. 10 Mar 1736/7, baptized Boxford 13 March 1736/7, d. Harvard 21 Oct 1746, aged 9y 7m 11d. He is buried in the Harvard Cem. [50]
  • Hannah, bapt. Boxford 27 May 1739, d. Harvard 4 July 1785, aged 46, m. Harvard 2 Feb 1758 John ATHERTON, b. Harvard 22 Feb 1736/7, d. Waterford, ME 1795, the son of John Atherton and Phebe Wright. John was a soldier in Capt Isaac Gates' company, Col. Asa Whitcomb's regiment responding to the Lexington alarm. [51]
  • John, b. 17 June and bapt. Boxford 21 June 1741, d. Westmoreland 15 April 1786, and m. c.1761 Lois DAVIS, b. 12 Oct 1742, d. Westmoreland 8 Sep 1830. In 1776 John was a sergeant in the 8th company of Col. Nichols' regiment; he served in the Battle of Bunker Hill. He was chosen as captain of a company of 63 men raised for serve against Burgoyne in Nov 1777. He lived in the north part of Westmoreland, but late in life moved to Windham, VT and was called late of Londonderry, VT on his tombstone. He died in Westmoreland while on a visit to his oldest brother, Jonathan. He and his wife are buried in the Canoe Meadow Cem., Westmoreland. They had 14 children. [52] [53]
  • Mary, b. 27 Sep, bapt. Boxford 2 Oct 1743, d. Harvard 22 Oct 1746, aged 3y 25d; bur. Harvard Cem. [54]

(5g) Abijah Cole[edit]

Abijah Cole, the son of Jonathan Cole and Judith Brown, was born in Boxford, Mass., but baptized in neighboring Bradford 11 March 1733[/4?] and died in Harvard, MA 11 May 1768 "a middle aged man." He married in Harvard, MA 3 Mar 1759 Sarah KENT, the daughter of Josiah Kent of Harvard. Following Abijah's death, Sarah m. in Harvard, MA 30 Mar 1772 Samuel Garfield, who was a millwright, and taught his step-sons that trade. Sometime about 1755, while he was still single, Abijah wrote a short will before embarking on a military expedition to Quebec. It reads: "I, Abijah Cole, having joined a company or regiment for the capture of Quebec, in view of the uncertainty of human life, do give and bequeath to my father, Jonathan Cole, and to my brothers, Jonathan and John Cole, certain lots of land situated in Harvard, and to my friend Sarah Kent, personal property, consisting of a watch and money." Abijah survived the expedition and came home to marry Sarah, and had several children before dying at an early age. Since Abijah died in Harvard, he is almost certainly buried in the central cemetery, where his mother and several siblings are buried, though no marker has been found for him. Children, born Harvard, MA: [55]

  • Infant, b. 1760, d. Harvard, MA 26 April 1760. While there is no record of a burial location, it is highly likely that the child was buried in the Harvard Cemetery where Abijah's mother and several siblings are buried with grave markers. [56]
  • Sarah, b. Harvard 24 May 1761, and d. supposedly in Westmoreland, NH 3 Nov 1788, did not marry. According to Frank T. Cole, author of a Cole genealogy covering this family (publsihed 1887), after the death of her father, Sarah came to Westmoreland, NH with other members of her family. She died unmarried at the age of 23, and was buried in this cemetery and had a marker on her grave. However, this memorialist was not able to find her marker when visiting this cemetery in 1993 and again in 2011. In case Frank Cole was wrong about Sarah, here are two other records that might pertain to her: a Lucy Cole, daughter of Sarah Cole was baptized at Harvard, MA 5 Dec 1784. Also, there was an intention of marriage in Harvard, MA between Sarah Cole and Luther Ward of Leicester, dated 5 Sep 1783. [57]
  • Abijah, likely born in the part of Littleton, Mass. that became the town of Harvard on 8 December 1762, and died in Prospect Harbor, Hancock Co., Maine 27 June 1845. He was about seven when his father died, and his mother remarried to Samuel Garfield, a millwright. He was taught Garfield's trade, and went to Maine with his step-father, building mills. He was married (intention in Gouldsboro, ME May 1789) to Nancy Ann WILLIAMS, b. 29 Sep 1768, d. Prospect Harbor, ME 10 March 1857. Abijah was a soldier in the Revolutioanry War. On a 22 Jul 1780 list of men raised to reinforce the Continental Army, Abijah's name appears with this description: age 17 yrs; stature, 5ft 9in; complexion, dark; residence, Harvard; marched to camp 22 Jul 1780 under command of Capt. William Scott. He was discharged 22 Jan 1781 with six months and 12 days service. Abijah purchased property in the village of Prospect Harbor, town of Gouldsboro, where he lived the remainder of his life. On 31 Oct 1832, Abijah made application at Hancock Co., ME for a Revolutionary War pension, calling himself aged 70, and a resident of Gouldsboro. On 15 July 1846, his widow, aged 77, applied for widow's pension in Hancock Co., ME, and on 5 Apr 1855, aged 86, she applied for "BLW" [Bounty land warrant?]. Abijah and Nancy had eleven children. They are buried in the Prospect Harbor Cemetery. [58]
  • Lois, b. Harvard 2 Nov 1764, d. Broome County, NY 29 Jan 1834. Her father died when she was three years old. She was married to Solomon ROBBINS, b. Harvard, MA 21 Oct 1759, d. Union Center, NY 7 July 1831, the son of Ephraim Robbins and Hannah Blanchard. They lived in Westmoreland, New Hampshire where their eleven children were born, but late in life moved to Broome County, New York where they both died. They are buried in the Nanticoke Valley Cemetery in Union Center, Broome Co., NY [59]
  • Judith, b. Harvard 5 March 1767 and died in Cambridgeport, Mass. on 30 March 1810. Her father died the year after she was born, and a few years later her mother married Samuel Garfield. Judith was married on 2 November 1797 to John HAYDEN, b. Hopkinton, Mass. 11 July 1768, d. Brookline, Mass 15 July 1844, the son of John Hayden and Hannah Claflin of Hopkinton, Mass. John was an India merchant, and had his business in Cambridgeport, Mass., where the family lived. Judith and John had four children born there, but she died in 1810 at the age of 43. Shortly after her death, John was married on 10 July 1811 in Roxbury, Mass. to Abigail Crafts, the daughter of Daniel Crafts and a cousin of his first wife. She died in 1814, after which John was married a third time on 22 May 1825 to Jane (Woodward) Hyslop, the widow of David Hyslop of Brookline, Mass., and the daughter of Joseph and Jane Woodward. Despite being a successful merchant, John may be the one of his name who enlisted in the military on 18 March 1812, at the age of 45 during the War of 1812.. The obituary for Judith appeared in several newspapers shortly after her death. The following appeared in the Boston Mirror, v.II, iss. 24, p 191 (31 March 1810): "At Cambridge-port, yesterday morning, Mrs. Judith Hayden, wife of Mr. Jonathan Hayden, of a sudden and most distressing sickness.-- Mr. H. also on Sunday morning last, lost a daughter, after a few hours attack of the same malady. The funeral of Mrs. Hayden, will be this afternoon, at 3 o'clock--friends and relatives are requested to attend without a more particular invitation." Other obituaries say that she died "on Friday morning last" of "Spotted Fever". Many websites on the internet give the death location for Judith as being in Vermont, but this is incorrect; she lived and died in Cambridgeport, Massachusetts where her husband was a merchant. Judith's name appears on the family tombstone in Mount Auburn Cemetery. The cemetery has no record of her burial, but it is nevertheless possible that she was moved here from another cemetery. Her husband was moved here with his second wife in November 1845, and his third wife was later buried here. The original burial location is not known. Judith had four children. [60]
  • Asa, b. Harvard 5 Dec 1768, m. Anna GOLDSMITH (below).

(4g) Asa Cole, Sr.[edit]

Asa, the youngest child of Abijah Cole and Sarah Kent, was born in Harvard, Mass. 5 Dec 1768 died Westmoreland, NH 6 Dec 1816, and married about 1792 Anna GOLDSMITH, b. Attleboro, Mass. 27 Jan 1772, d. Montpelier, Vermont 4 Sep 1852, the daughter of Richard Goldsmith and Sarah Dix of Littleton and Harvard, Mass. Asa was born seven months after his father's death, and from his 7th to 14th year lived with his aunt, Mrs. Chamberlain, in Westmoreland, New Hampshire. He then went to live with his step-father, Samuel Garfield, in Harvard, MA and learned his trade as a millwright. Asa worked with Mr. Garfield in Massachusetts and Maine until about 1794 when they went to Rindge, NH. There they owned and operated a grist mill for about six years, but Asa was back in Westmoreland in 1800 when he appears on the census there with wife, daughter, and three sons. Asa then went to Coventry, VT, then Putney, VT, then in about 1810 was back in Westmoreland, NH, where he built the Pierce Mills in the southern part of town. In 1814, the mills were sold, and he went to Boston to work for the summer. In March 1815, he was planning to join a party under Ephraim Brown of Westmoreland, and emigrate to Ohio, but serious illness forced him to scrap this plan. Instead, he went to Gouldsboro, Maine, where his brother Abijah was, but in Nov 1816 returned to Westmoreland, where he died two weeks later. His widow raised the large family of eleven children as a single parent, then in 1838, long after Asa's death, she married Amory Pollard of Bolton, MA, as his third wife, whom she survived. She died in Montpelier, VT while visiting her youngest daughter, Susan. Asa is buried in the North Cemetery in Westmoreland, NH with his wife and many of his children. [61]

  • Asa, b. Harvard, Mass. 13 Nov 1793, m. (1) 10 Mar 1821 Marcia KNIGHT of Rindge, NH; m. (2) Medway, MA 13 Nov 1839 Meletiah "Millie" Metcalf FAIRBANKS.
  • Richard Goldsmith, b. Rindge, NH 7 Nov 1795, d. Burlington, VT 18 Dec 1864, and m. Elizabeth W. CUTLER, b. 30 Sep 1796, d. 12 April 1868, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Cutler. At the age of 6, Richard moved to Cambridgeport, Suffolk, Massachusetts, to live with an uncle. When he turned 14, he started working in his uncle's store. Richard worked as a merchant in Cambridgeport, New York, and Troy, Orleans County, Vermont until 1826. That year he became an officer in the bank of Troy. In 1832, Richard moved to Burlington, Vermont, where he held a Cashier's position at the Bank of Burlington until his death. Richard Cole was a member of St. Paul's Church in Burlington, Vermont. For more than 30 years he served the church in a variety of capacities: vestryman for 30 years, senior church warden, treasurer, and music leader. He was also a trustee and treasurer of the Vermont Episcopal Institute. Richard was a well known and respected member of the community. After his death, St. Paul's vestry president published a notice in the Burlington Free Press stating that the members of the vestry would attend the funeral 'in a body', and wear mourning for 30 days. The officers of the Bank of Burlington also published a notice describing Richard as "... a valued citizen, an upright and courteous gentleman, and [to] this Bank a tried friend and accomplished Cashier." The Bank officers resolved to also attend the funeral as a group, and encouraged representatives from other banks in the city to also attend. - Burlington (Vermont) Free Press,December 23, 1864. Richard and Elizabeth are buried in the Elmwood Cemetery, Burlington, VT. [62]
  • Sarah, b. Rindge 24 Sep 1797, d. Londonderry, VT 12 Nov 1832, m. 7 Nov 1816, as his second wife, Asa FARNSWORTH, b. Guilford, VT 7 May 1775, d. E. Smithfield, PA 17 June 1824. Asa had m. Sarah and Asa had eight known children. [63]
  • Benjamin Franklin, b. Rindge 11 Aug 1799, d. Panama March 1850, m. 1821 Adeline SHERWOOD, b. 9 Jan 1806, d. Brooklyn, NY 1 June 1852. Benjamin's father died when he was 17, and a year or two after that he went to West Point, NY where he worked in the shipping business. He owned and operated a craft that he used to shuttle goods from New York City upriver. His health failed him when he was 50, and he then moved to the warm climate of the isthmus of Panama. He soon caught a fever and died in Chargres in 1850. He and his wife had ten children. Benjamin shares a memorial marker with four of his siblings in the North Cemetery, Westmoreland, NH. [64]
  • Nancy Goldsmith "Anna", b. Westmoreland, NH 6 Feb 1802, d. Amherst, Mass. 13 Dec 1872, married 11 February 1829 Reverend Isaac ESTY, b. Westmoreland 24 April 1796, d. (3g) Asa Cole, Jr.[edit]

Asa, the son of Asa Cole and Anna Goldsmith of Harvard, Mass. and Westmoreland, New Hampshire, was born Harvard 13 Nov 1793, d. West Medway, Mass. 19 April 1872, and married (1) 10 Mar 1821 Marcia KNIGHT of Rindge, NH, b. Rindge 16 Aug 1793, d. West Medway, Mass. 15 Mar 1839; m. Asa was a farmer most of his life, and was called by the Cole family genealogist, Frank T. Cole, a man of immense physical strength and endurance. He represented Medway in the Massachusetts Legislature in 1841. Asa and Meletiah appear in the 1860 census for W. Medway with their five children, and in Medway in 1870 with two of their children, Charles and Millie. Asa was called an invalid in the 1870 census. Asa shares a monument with both wives in the Evergreen Cemetery, West Medway, Mass. Children with first wife, Marcia: [72]

Asa and Sarah are bur. in the Evergreen Cem., W. Medway, MA by his parents. They had four known children. [73]
  • Nancy G., b. Rindge, NH 27 Sep 1824, d. W. Medway, Mass. 20 Nov 1873, aged 49, did not marry. Nancy was a school teacher in Fall River, Mass. and other places. In 1870 she was living in Fall River in the household of her step-mother's older brother, George O. Fairbanks. She never married, and shares a grave marker with her parents in Evergreen Cemetery. [74]

Children of Asa with second wife, Meletiah:

  • Charles Henry, b. Medway, Mass. 2 Dec 1840, d. there 5 Mar 1906, and m. Medway 30 Nov 1882 Mary Frances CHADWICK, b. China, ME 3 Aug 1848, d. Holliston, Mass. 17 Oct 1930, daughter of Zelotes and Hannah Chadwick. Charles was the oldest of five children born to Asa's second wife, Meletiah M. Fairbanks. In 1870 he was living in the household of his parents and worked in a paper mill. He was working in a boot factory when enumerated on the 1880 census in Medway as a boarder in the house of Abbie M. Cobb. At the age of 41 he was married to Mary Frances Chadwick, and together they had two children. In 1900 Charles was called a farmer in the census, and living in Medway with wife, two children, his father-in-law, Zelotes Chadwick, and an elderly female boarder. Following his death, his widow lived primarily with their son, Harold, and was enumerated in the 1930 census. Their children were (1) Harold Otis, b. 20 Jan 1884 (per family genealogy; 1887 by another source), d. Medway 31 Aug 1962, m. 9 June 1907 Hattie Sabra Fales; two children; and (2) Leola Mary B., b. 23 Nov 1885, d. Orlando, FL 2 March 1970; unmarried. Charles and Mary are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, W. Medway, Mass. [75]

In 1870 George was living with wife, son, and mother-in-law in Westborough, Worcester Co., MA. In 1880 he was living with the same people and an additional son in Grafton, Worcester Co., MA, he being called a laborer. By 1900 his first wife had died, and he was living in Weston, Middlesex Co., MA, working in the household of Fred Young and family as a servant. His son Theodore O. was in the same household also working as a servant. George was married a second time when aged 60, in Medway, MA on 13 Oct 1903 to Araminta "Minnie" (GESNER) Sweet, b. CT 3 Feb, ca 1855, the daughter of John Gesner and Maria N. Knapp. Minnie's death record gives her birth date as 3 Feb 1862, but the year is obviously in error. In 1910 George and Minnie were living without any other family or boarders in Medway, MA, he being called a watchman in a mill. His wife Minnie had previously had five children, three of whom were still living in 1910. Within just a few weeks of the 1910 census, Minnie died, in Medway, on 5 July 1910, of diabetis millitus and cervical cancer. She was buried in Derby, CT. George died in Cuttyhunk, Mass., and was likely living with his son, Theodore, who was the informant on his death certificate. This death record gives his burial location as West Medway, Mass., which without a doubt means he is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, where many of his family members are buried, but I have been unable to find a marker for him despite a couple complete trips around the cemetery. Children: (1) George F., b. Southboro, MA 29 Feb 1868; (2) Theodore O., b. MA Feb 1872, living in Cuttyhunk, Mass. in 1911 when acting as informant on his father's death certificate. [76]
  • Hattie E., b. W. Medway 12 Feb 1845, d. there 16 Mar 1866, aged 21. Hattie died as a young woman, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, sharing a marker with her parents. [77]
  • Albert Metcalf, b. Medway 6 July 1847, m. Ada Jane FISH (below).
  • Ellen Maria “Nellie”, b. W. Medway 13 Oct 1850, d. there 1923, and m. Medway or Milford, Mass. 24 May 1876 Ezra PEARSON, b. N. Yorkshire, England 19 Jan 1831, d. Medway, Mass. 4 May 1907, the son of William Pearson and Mary Murtiroid. Ezra already had several children from a previous marriage. Nellie was enumerated on the 1870 census in Medway with her parents, and named "Millie M," with the occupation of school teacher. In 1880 she was living in Medway with Ezra Pierson and six children, all but one of whom was born before her marriage. In 1900 she was living with family in Milford, Mass., to include husband Ezra, b. Jan 1832, daughter Bertha L., b. Dec 1871, daughter Hattie M., b. Sep 1879, and son Ezra C., b. Aug 1884. In 1910 Nellie was widowed and living in Medway with her daughter (actually this is probably her step-daughter), Bertha L. Her children with Ezra, surname Pearson: (1) Hattie Minerva, b. 26 Sep 1879; (2) Ezra Cole, b. 4 Aug 1884. Ezra appears on the 1850 census for Medway, Mass. as a 19-year old living in a home with many other boarders. He was married for the first time in Medway on 22 July 1853 to Susan A. Scott, aged 20, the daughter of Lemuel Scott by one account, or of Samuel Scott by another. In 1860 he was a bootmaker living in Medway with wife Susan, two children, and a boarder, Henry Bland. On 11 March 1864 Ezra enlisted in the Massachusetts 16th Light Artillery Battery, and mustered out on 27 June 1865 at Camp Meigs, Readville, Mass. with the rank of Private. On 26 October 1868 he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. He has not been found on the 1870 census, but sometime in or after 1872 his first wife died, and he was married in Medway on 24 May 1876 to Ellen M. "Nellie" Cole. In 1900 he was living in Milford, Worcester Co., Mass. (which is adjacent to West Medway), with wife Ellen and his three youngest children. He died from angina pectoris. Nellie shares a monument with her husband and his first wife in the Evergreen Cemetery in West Medway, Mass. [78]

(2g) Albert M. Cole[edit]

Albert Metcalf Cole, the son of Asa Cole, Jr. and Meletiah M. Fairbanks, was born Medway, Mass. 6 July 1847, d. West Medway 2 Sep 1923, aged 76, and m. 24 Sep 1868 Ada Jane FISH, b. Norwich, CT 9 Feb 1852, d. Cranston, RI 23 Sep 1950, aged 98, the daughter of John Fish and Jane Taylor of Wrexham, Wales and West Medway, Mass. Albert was a shoe worker in Howard, RI, and also worked in a prison. The family is enumerated on the 1880 census for Medway, MA, Albert working in a boot factory at the time. Ada appears with her parents and surviving siblings in the 1860 federal census and 1865 Massachusetts state census, in Medway, Mass. While still in her teens, she was married on 24 September 1868 to Albert M. Cole, and they had three children. Following the death of her husband, Ada lived with her daughter Alice Watson. Her address in December 1932 was 144 Stanwood Street, Providence, RI, according to the marriage license application of her son Myron. Albert and Ada share a monument with his grandparents, Otis and Sylvia Fairbanks, in the Evergreen Cemetery in West Medway. Children: [79]

  • Clinton Douglass, b. Medway 4 May 1869, d. West Medway 17 Dec 1951, never married. Clinton lived with various family members during his life. He shares a monument with his parents in the Evergreen Cemetery, West Medway, Mass. [80]
  • Alice Mabel, b. W. Medway 3 Jul 1871, d. Cranston, RI 14 Dec 1958, aged 87, m. John B. WATSON (see).
  • Myron Asa, b. W. Medway 12 Jul 1876, d. Biloxi, Miss. 12 Jul 1957, aged 81, and m. (1) c. 1902 Annie (PATSTORE?); m. (2) Biloxi, Miss. 27 Dec 1932 Marguertye Olivia ELMER, b. 28 Oct 1887, d. Biloxi, Miss. 1 Aug 1965, aged 77, daughter of Frederick W. Elmer and Elizabeth Maycock. Born in Massachusetts (a family record says Myron was born 13 July, a day off from gravestone date), Myron was the youngest of three children born to Albert M. Cole and Ada J. Fish. Myron worked for the federal government, traveling to different parts of the country. He was first married in about 1902 to Annie, whose surname may have been Patstore. Myron was enumerated on the 1930 census in Washington DC with wife Annie and her sister Monica Patstore, but it is not known if this was a maiden name or married name. Annie and Monica were both born in Rhode Island. Myron's occupation given in the 1930 census was government investigator, and his home was valued at $15,000. His wife Annie likely died soon after this census was taken. It hasn't been determined if Myron met his second wife in Washington DC while she was visiting there, or in Biloxi, Mississippi while he was visiting there. Regardless, Myron was married in Biloxi on 27 December 1932 to Margueryte Olivia Elmer of Biloxi. His address given in the marriage license application was 2941 Tilden Street, Washington, DC. Family tradition says that the bride's father, Judge F. W. Elmer, gave the couple the oldest house in Biloxi as a wedding gift. Following Myron's death, Margueryte continued to live in the house with her sister, Cora Enochs. After Margueryte's death, the house was sold in 1962, and shortly thereafter became Mary Mahoney's Old French House Restaurant. The house was said to have been originally built in 1737 by French colonist Louis Frasier. Myron and second wife Margueryte are buried in the Biloxi City Cemetery; Myron had no known children with either wife. [81]

Nicholas is first of record in New England on 13 March 1638 when he received an allotment of land in the "six-mile grant" in Lynn, Mass. Nicholas was active in Lynn town affairs from 1638 to 1649, and the family remained attached to the church there until 1663 when the family was admitted to the church at Reading. Nicholas had been given grants of land by the town of Reading as early as 1647, and he became active in Reading affairs in 1651. His will was made 29:1mo:1673 (29 March 1673) and probated 17:4:1673 (17 June 1673), with estate valued at 1232 pounds. Children, first three likely born in England, last two births recorded in Reading:

  • John, b. 1634 (calc from age at death), d. Reading 12 March 1717 in 83d year, m. (1) Chelmsford, Mass. 30 May 1677 Anna FISKE, b. Wenham, Mass. 15 Jan 1646[/7?], bapt. 12 March 1646[/7?], d. Reading 30 May 1681, daughter of Rev. John Fiske and Ann Gipps; m. (2) Reading 29 March 1682 Elizabeth (BULKLEY) Emerson, b. Concord, Mass. 1638, d. Reading 12 Aug 1686, daughter of Rev. Edward Bulkely of Concord, and widow of Rev. Joseph Emerson of Mendon.; m. (3) Malden 24 June 1697 Rebecca (CRAWFORD) Sprague, b. c. 1634, d. Reading 8 July 1710, aged 76, widow of Samuel Sprague of Malden. John should not be confused with a slightly older John Browne of Reading, who was called "John of the Hill" or "John, Sr." The subject John was often called "Captain John" or sometimes "John, Jr." Being responsible as a young man, in 1660 John was sent to England as legal attorney for his father to settle claims concerning properties of the Lides, the family of his father's mother. Capt. John lived on the shore of Lake Quannapowit in a house he built in 1667. He left no will; all of his estate went to his only surviving child, Anna Emerson. His two children were both with his first wife, born 1677/8 and 1679[/80?]
  • Josiah, b. 1636 (calc from age at death), d. Reading 29 Jan 1690/1 (aged 54), m. Reading 23 Feb 1666/7 Mary FELLOW(S), b. say 1645, daughter of William and Mary Fellows who came to New England aboard the ship Planter in 1635. Josiah joined the Reading church in 1670, and was the town surveyor in 1704, but left few other records. Administration of his estate was given to widow Mary, with inventory dated Jan 1692 [1691/2?]. Josiah and Mary had ten children born at Reading from 1667 to 1688.
  • Cornelius, b. c. 1637, d. 1689, m. (1) Sarah LAMSON; (2) Sarah Southerick; (3) Mary (DUSTIN) Colson
  • Elizabeth, b. c. 1638/9, d. Reading, Mass. 27 Feb 1697, m. Reading 30 Sep 1663 Hananiah PARKER, b. 1638, d. Reading 10 March 1723/4, aged about 86, son of Dea. Thomas and Amy Parker. After Elizabeth's death, Hananiah m. (2) Watertown, Mass. 12 Dec 1700 Mary (Bursham) Bright, daughter of William Bursham and widow of Dea. John Bright. Elizabeth and Hananiah had six children born at Reading from 1664 to 1681.
  • Edward, b. Reading 15 Aug 1640, d. Reading 26 April 1685, m. Reading 21 July 1679 Sarah DIX, prob. b. Ipswich, Mass, daughter of Ralph and Esther Dix of Ipswich and Reading. Sarah m. (2) Lynn 24 Nov 1685 Thomas Laughton. Edward and Sarah had three children born in Reading from 1680 to 1684.
  • Joseph, b. Reading 10 Dec 1647, d. Reading 16 Oct 1723, m. Reading, perhaps as his second wife, Elizabeth BANCROFT, b. Reading 7 Dec 1653, d. there 31 Dec 1732, daughter of Thomas Bancroft and Elizabeth Metcalf. He had a daughter born in 1671 who may have been of an earlier wife. He then had ten more children with Elizabeth, born from 1675 to 1696.

Note: a Sarah Browne, b. Reading 6 June 1650, daughter of William Browne, may belong in this family, as it is doubtful that William Browne even exists. If Sarah does belong here, she likely died young as she is not mentioned with all the other children in her father's will.

(8g) Cornelius Brown, Sr.[edit]

TEG 8:185-7

Cornielius, the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Browne, was born c. 1637, probably in England, and d. Reading, Mass. c. 1703. He m. (1) Reading 6 March 1664/5 Sarah LAMSON, b. Ipswich, Mass., d. Reading 4 Oct 1683, daughter of William and Sarah Lamson. He m. (2) Reading 20 Nov 1684 Sarah SOUTHERICK; and m. (3) Reading 26 Sep 1698 Mary (DUSTIN) Colson, daughter of Josiah Dustin of Reading and widow of Adam Colson of Reading. Cornelius built his house in Reading by 1667, but he did not transfer his church membership from Lynn to Reading in 1670 with his three brothers. He served in the roles of hog constable, surveyor, and tythingman in Reading. The division of Cornelius's estate took place following his death, when his heirs signed an agreement on 23 June 1703. Children, all births recorded at Reading:

  • Nicholas, b. 7 April 1666, d. Reading 25 May 1666
  • Cornelius, b. 3 June 1667, m. Susanna (STORY) Clark (below).

(7g) Cornelius Brown, Jr.[edit]

TEG 8:186; Story Gen (2004):12,31-2

Cornelius, b. Reading, Mass 3 June 1667, d. Ipswich, Mass. 28 June 1743, was the son of Cornelius Brown and Sarah Lamson of Lynn and Reading, Mass. He was married (1) c. 1689 to Susanna (STORY) Clark, b. Ipswich 14 March 1664, d. Boxford, Mass. 9 Jan 1734, the daughter of William Story and Sarah Foster, and the widow of John Clark, who was b. Lynn 2 Nov 1658, d. there 18 Dec 1685, son of William Clark and Eleanor Dearnford. Following Susanna's death, Cornelius m. (2) Ipswich (int 8 April 1734, marriage 2 ___[May?] 1734) the widow Mary (STEVENS) Crooke who died in 1757. Mary had m. (1) (int. Ipswich 23 Oct 1714) Thomas Crooke. Cornelius's will, dated 5 April 1743 was proved 4 July 1743. In it he names all six of his known children, and names his wife, Mary, as sole executrix. The will of his second wife Mary, dated 20 Dec 1749, proved 25 July 1757, gives her dwelling house to Benjamin Dutch of Ipswich, and after his death it was to go to her son John Crook, if living. If he was no longer living, then the house was to go to her grandson-in-law, Daniel Brown of Concord. Cornelius's first wife, Susanna, has an existing grave marker in the Mount Vernon Cemetery in Boxford, Mass.; Cornelius may have been buried there as well, but has no extant marker. However, he lived in Ipswich with his second wife at the time of his death, and she may have had him buried in that town, as she was his caregiver and the executrix of his estate. Children of Cornelius and Susanna, first born in Lynn, the remainder born in Reading, Mass.: [82] [83] [84]

  • Susanna, b. 6 March 1689/90, d. Boxford 20 July 1785, aged 95, m. Lynn, Mass (int 3 May 1712) Samuel COLE, b. Lynn 27 Dec 1687, d. Boxford 20 Jan 1765, the son of John Cole and Sarah Alesbee, and the much younger half-brother of John Cole, Jr. who married Mary Eaton, and were the parents of Susanna's youngest sister's husband, Jonathan Cole.
  • Jemimah, b. 17 Dec 1691, d. Groton, Mass. 1729 (per secondary sources), m. Groton 1 June 1721 Daniel BOYNTON, b. Rowley, MA 26 May 1692 (but his birth is also recorded in Georgetown, Mass.), d. Pepperell, Mass. 22 Feb 1755, aged 63, the son of Samuel Boynton and Hannah Switcher. Some accounts give Jemima a twin brother, Jeremiah, but the likely scenario is that she is actually the Jeremiah Brown whose birth appears in the Reading vital records. When the name Jemima is spelled with an h at the end, it is very easy to understand how the name, in any handwriting, could look like Jeremiah. The spelling of her name in her Groton marriage record is Jemimiah. During her short life, Jemimah had four children, born 1722 to 1729, and it appears that her death was associated with the birth of her last child. The family likely lived in the part of Groton that later became Pepperell.
  • Moses, b. 19 April 1694, living in 1743, m. (int in Lynn, Mass. 15 April 1719) Martha EMMONS, b. c. 1698, d. CT 14 June 1738. Note: the names Moses and Aaron are often used for twins, and the birthdate for both of them are the same, but the Reading vital records clearly indicate that they were born in different years. If Martha Emmons was the daughter of Benjamin Emmons and Elizabeth Bradford, then she was born in Boston, Mass. on 3 March 1697. It appears that Moses and Martha moved to Connecticut shortly after their marriage, as they have no children with births recorded in Lynn. Moses was called of Tolland, CT in his father's 1743 will, and was given land in Tolland and all of his father's wearing apparel. No records have been found for Moses and Martha, other than Martha's death, and the deaths of three of their children found in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut vital records, as follows: Moses Brown, son of Moses and Martha, d. 6 July 1727; Peter Brown d. 4 April 1737; and Clark Brown d. 8 April 1738.
  • Aaron, b. 19 April 1696, d. Boxford c. 1725, m. Bradford, Mass. 30 Dec 1718 Hannah/Susanna HOVEY, b. Topsfield, Mass. 25 July 1699, d. Boxford 10 June 1782, the daughter of Luke Hovey and Susanna Pillsbury. The cover of a probate document (apparently an administration paper) for Aaron is dated 15 Feb 1725, but unfortunately this doesn't tell us if the true date is 1724/5 or 1725/6. If we take it at face value, then the latter would be the correct date. Following Aaron's death, his widow m. in Boxford 25 Nov 1731 William Lakeman, b. Ipswich 17 May 1706, d. Boxford 4 March 1780, in his 74th year, the son of William Lakeman and Eliza Palmer. Aaron's wife is called Hannah in some records and Susanna in others. Her birth record in Topsfield names her Hannah, her marriage record in Bradford names her Hannah, and the baptismal record of her oldest child, Aaron, in Bradford names her Hannah. The birth records of her three children in Boxford name her Susanna, and her marriage record to her second husband in Boxford names her Susanna. Her death record only records her name as Mrs. Lakeman, old. The birth and baptismal records of her oldest child indicate that she is just one person, so based on the records, she needs to be given two names. Aaron had three children, born 1720 to 1723/4 with Hannah/Susanna before his untimely death. Susanna then had four more children, born 1732 to 1742, with her second husband.
  • Caleb, b. Reading 23 Oct 1698, d. Harvard, Mass. 23 Nov 1758, m. (int Rowley, MA 18 Oct 1722) Elizabeth JEWETT, b. Rowley 3 March 1700/1, the daughter of Maximilian Jewett and Sarah Hardy. Caleb and Elizabeth had eleven known children, the first nine born in Boxford 1724 to 1739, the tenth baptized in Bradford (but recorded in Boxford) in 1741, and the eleventh baptized in Harvard in 1745. Caleb is buried in the Harvard, Mass. Cemetery with a surviving grave marker, but the death date and burial location for Elizabeth have not been discovered. [85]
  • Judith (Judah), b. Reading 10 Nov 1700, m. Jonathan COLE. She is buried in Harvard, Mass.; he in Westmoreland, NH. [86]

(9g) William Lamson[edit]

Lamson Gen:15-30[87]

William Lamson was born in England say 1610, d. Ipswich about 1 Jan 1658/9, and m. c. 1641 Sarah _______, b. say 1620. The Lamson Genealogy says this is a daughter of John and Hannah Ayers of Salisbury and later Haverhill, but John and Hannah Ayers did not have a daughter named Sarah, so we really don't know who Sarah's parents are. William was in New England by 1636, settling in Ipswich, Mass. He received a grant of land there on 5 Feb 1637[/8?], and another one in 1640. He was made a freeman in Ipswich on 17 May 1637, and held several minor offices there, including Pounder and Fence Viewer. His inventory was taken 11 Feb 1658/9, amounting to 111 pounds, and widow Sarah was appointed administratrix on 29 March 1659. Widow Sarah married by 1661 Thomas Hartshorn of Reading, Mass. Children of William and Sarah (birth dates come from William's inventory):

  • Sarah, b. Ipswich 1645, m. Cornelius BROWNE (see).
  • Samuel, b. Ipswich Nov 1649, d. Reading 7 Oct 1692, and m. 19 May 1676 Mary NICHOLS, daughter of Richard and Anna Nichols of Ipswich. He was a bricklayer, and served in King Philip's War under Capt. Davenport in 1675. Samuel and Mary had nine children born from 1677 to 1691.
  • Phebe, b. Ipswich 1652, m. John TOWNE.

Joseph was a stone cutter and cordwainer, living in Charlestown, and later Malden, Mass. His will was dated 16 July 1722 and proved 21 Sep 1722. Joseph and Elizabeth had eight children born from 1680 to 1699.

(8g) William Story[edit]

TAG:43:238-9; Story Gen(2000):1

William, the son of Robert Story, was born in Norwich, Norfolk, England c. 1613 (aged 23 in April 1637; aged 55 in Sep 1668), d. Ipswich, Mass. Jan 1702/3, and m. c. 1640 Sarah FOSTER, b. c. 1620, living 1680, daughter of Renold/Reginald and Judith Foster. William is first of record when "Story, William son of Robert dec." completed his apprenticeship under John Coats of Norwich [England], carpenter, in 1634, for 7 years. He would have been aged 21 upon completing this apprenticeship, matching perfectly with the assumed birth year given above. On 8 April 1637 William Story, aged 23, was enrolled to embark on either the John and Dorothy of Ipswich or the Rose of Yarmouth (the two ships sailed together, and the passenger lists were combined), being listed as a servant in the family of Samuel Dix, 43, his wife Joane, 38, their two children, and another servant, Daniel Linsey, 18. He arrived in New England 8 June 1637, and settled in Ipswich, Mass., where he sold land in 1643. He was a juror in 1653, and on a list of freemen in 1658. He was a carpenter by trade. William's will is not readily available, and its date is uncertain, but it was recorded on 10 Oct 1691, with son Seth as executor, but not proved until 20 Jan 1702/3. During the interim, he conveyed properties to his sons William and Samuel and made small bequests to his daughter Susanna Browne, granddaughter Ruth Walker, and Samuel's daughter, Elizabeth. William and Sarah Story are ancestors of U.S. President Millard Fillmore through their son Samuel. Children:

  • Sarah, b. say 1641 (the 2004 gen gives the date as 8 Aug 1641, but the source is not given), d. 1721 (same source), m. Ipswich 29 Oct 1661 (VR) Richard WALKER. There is no evidence that Richard was son of Capt Richard Walker. At least five children, of whom Ruth is named in deed of her grandfather in 1690s.
  • Seth, b. c. 1646, d. Ipswich 9 Oct 1732, aged 86 (VR), m. Elizabeth _______, d. Ipswich 12 March 1736, aged about 85 (GR4). Seth's will was dated 24 June 1724 and proved 6 Nov 1732. His inventory of 8 Nov 1732 totaled 134 pounds personal and 1068 pounds real property.
  • William, b. Ipswich c. 1648, d. Brookline, Mass. 20 July 1721, aged 73, m. (1) Ipswich 25 Oct 1671 (VR) Susanna FULLER, d. Roxbury, Mass. 4 June 1707, prob. daughter of John Fuller and Elizabeth Emerson; m. (2) 3 Dec 1707 Abigail Torrey, widow of Jonathan Torrey.
  • Samuel, b. say 1650, d. Norwich, CT 1726, m. (1) c. 1679 Elizabeth _______, b. say 1659, d. by 1716; m. (2) (int. Ipswich 16 Sep 1716) Mary Williams. His will was proved in Norwich 1 Dec 1726. Samuel and Elizabeth had twelve children born from 1680 to 1697.
  • Abigail, b. c. 1653, was aged 15 when she testified about her grandfather Foster's horse on 17 March 1668/9. She was, at that time, a servant in the home of Thomas Low of Ipswich. Nothing more.
  • Susanna, b. c. 1660, d. Boxford, Mass. 9 Jan 1734[/5?], aged 74 (gs), m. (1) Lynn, Mass. 13 July 1681 John CLARK, b. Lynn 2:11m:1658 (2 Jan 1658/9), d. there 18 Dec 1685, son of William Clark and Mary Sherman. They had two children born 1682 and 1684/5. She m. (2) by 1689, as his first wife, Cornelius BROWN, Jr., son of Cornelius Brown and Sarah Lamson of Reading.
  • Hannah, b. Ipswich 19 Aug 1662 (VR), living in 1707, m. (1) Rowley, Mass. 3 Dec 1683 Richard SWAN, b. Haverhill, Mass. 24 Feb 1660[/1?], d. c. 1690, son of Robert Swan and Elizabeth Acey; m. (2) Rowley 18 May 1692 Thomas JEWETT, b. Rowley 20 Sep 1666, d. Boxford, Mass. 6 Mary 1731, son of Dea. Ezekiel Jewett and Faith Parratt. Hannah was the only one of her siblings to be mentioned in the 1680 will of her grandfather, Renold Foster. Richard Swan was admitted to the Rowley church 23 May 1684, shortly after his marriage. He was a soldier in the Canada Expedition in 1690, and died in service. Administration of his estate was granted to widow Hannah on 22 April 1691. Hannah and second husband Thomas moved to Boxford about 1702, but it wasn't until 18 Jan 1707[/8?] that they were dismissed from the Rowley church and recommended to the church in Boxford. Hannah had two children with her first husband, born 1686 and 1689. Thomas has an extant gravestone in the Harmony Cemetery in Boxford.
  • daughter, b. Ipswich 4 March 1664[/5?]. Some sources give William a daughter Mary, so it is possible that this daughter, unnamed in the vital record, was Mary.

(9g) Renold Foster[edit]

Dudley Wildes Ancestry (1959) 177-183 [88]; NEHGR 90(1936):307-10; TAG 18(1941):13-15; NEHGR 30(1876):83-87

Renald Foster was born say 1594, d. 1681, and married at Theydon Garnon, Essex, England 1619 Judith WIGNOL, b. c. 1599, d. Ipswich Oct 1664. I have not see support for the claim that Judith was daughter of Alexander Wignal and Frances Williams. Renald m. (2) Sep 1665 Sarah (_____) Martin, d. Ipswich 22 Feb 1692/3, widow of John Martin. Following his death, his widow Sarah m. 21 Sep 1682 William White of Haverhill, Mass. who d. 28 Sep 1690, aged about 80. It is quite possible that Renald was the son of an earlier Reynald Foster of Harlow, Essex, who made his will 18 Sep 1622, proved 7 Jan 1622/3. The subject Renald was in New England by 1638 when he bought a house and lot on 26 Sep, in Ipswich, Mass., on the north side of the Ipswich River. Renald served on juries several times from 1651 to 1668, was constable in 1661, and released from military training in 1667, but required to pay a bushel of Indian corn annually for the company's support, until relieved of this obligation in 1674. Renald's will was dated 30 April 1680, with codicil (called a "Memorandum") dated 5 March 1680/1, and proved 9 June 1681. The inventory was taken 30 May 1681 by John Whipple and Simon Stace, amounting to a sizable 744 pounds. Children, all born in England:

  • Sarah, b. c. 1620 (aged about 48 in 1668), m. William STORY (see). I have seen no support for the claim that she was baptized 15 Oct 1620, though it is a reasonable claim.
  • Abraham, b. c. 1622 (aged about 76 in 1698), d. Ipswich 15 Jan 1710/1 in about his 90th year, m. c. 1656 Lydia BURBANK, b. say 1635, daughter of Caleb and Martha Burbank of Rowley. There is no will or administration of Abraham's estate, but on 21 Dec 1698 he distributed much of it to members of his family. Abraham and Lydia had nine children born from 1657 to 1677.
  • Mary, b. b. c. 1624 (cb 1642), d. Topsfield, Mass 9 April 1705, m. (1) Daniel WOOD; m. (2) Francis PEABODY.
  • Renald, b. c. 1627, d. 28 Dec 1707 (from inv), m. c. 1652 Elizabeth DANE, b. say 1633, daughter of John Dane. She survived her husband. His will was dated 11 July 1704 and proved 10 Jan 1707/8. They had eleven children born from 1653 to 1678.
  • Isaac, b. c. 1630 (aged about 62 in 1692), d. Ipswich 8 Feb 1691/2, m. (1) 5 May 1658 Mary JACKSON, d. 27 Nov 1677; m. (2) 25 Nov 1678 Hanna Downing; m. (3) 16 March 1679/80 Martha Hale. His undated will was proved 29 March 1692. Isaac had eleven children with his first wife, born from 1658/9 to 1676, and two children with his third wife, born 1684 and 1687.
  • William, b. c. 1633 (aged about 78 in 1711), d. Boxford, Mass. 17 May 1713, m. 15 May 1661 Mary JACKSON, b. 8 Feb 1639[/40?], daughter of William and Joanna Jackson of Rowley. In 1661 he was received as an inhabitant of Rowley, the the section known as Rowley Village, later to become Boxford. He was one of the petitioners for the incorporation of Boxford, which occurred in 1685. His will was dated 3 Sep 1711 and proved 15 June 1713. He and Mary had nine children born in Rowley from 1661/2 to c. 1683.
  • Jacob, b. c. 1636, d. Ipswich 9 July 1710 in 75th year, m. (1) 12 Jan 1658/9 Martha KINSMAN, d. 15 Oct 1666; m. (2) 26 Feb 1666/7 Abigail LORD, d. 4 June 1729, daughter of Robert Lord and Mary Wait. He was deacon of the First Church in Ipswich, and he lived in the first house built by his father. His will was dated 7 July and proved 24 July 1710. Jacob had five children with his first wife, born from 1659 to 1665, and nine more with his second wife, born from 1667 to 1684. From NEHGR 30:86: "The grave of Deacon Foster is marked by a stone rudely carved; the inscription is,--'Here lies Dec'n Jacob Foster, who died July ye 9th 1710, in ye 75 yr of His Age.'"
  • NOTE: Renald had 56 grandchildren with his five sons, and 8 more with daughter Sarah. Those of daughter Mary will be tallied later.

(9g) Thomas Kent[edit]

Stearns Hist NH 2:431[89]

Thomas Kent was born in England say 1600, d. Gloucester 1 May 1658 (VR), and married a woman whose name has not been found who d. Gloucester 16 Oct 1671 (VR). Stearns said he settled in Gloucester, Mass. by 1643, but gives no reason for this. In 1649 he owned property near the burying ground in the West Parish known as Chebacco, later Essex, Mass. Richard Kent of Newbury also had property in this area. Children:

  • Thomas, b. say 1628, m. Joan PENNEY
  • Samuel, b. say 1630, m. 17 Jan 1654 Frances WOODALL. He transacted land with his brother Thomas in 1655, and they bought 18 acres together of Thomas Price/Prince in 1657. Four known children born from 1657 to 1664.
  • Josiah, b. say 1632

(8g) Thomas Kent[edit]

Thomas, the son of an earlier Thomas Kent, was born say 1628, probably in England, and died in Gloucester, Mass. 3 Aug 1696 (VR). He was married Gloucester 28 March 1658 (VR) to Joan PENNY, b. say 1638, living in 1691 (father's will), the daughter of Thomas and Ann Penny. An online record says Joan was baptized 30 Jan 1636 at St. Mary Major, Exeter, Devon, England. While I have seen no comment from any other compiler or genealogist on this family, the vital records of Gloucester make it appear that Joan's first three child deliveries were all twins. Children: [90]

  • Josiah, b. 31 March 1660 (VR), m. Mary LUFKIN
  • Thomas, b. 31 March 1660 (VR); must have been a twin; is he the Thomas Kent, Jr. who d. Gloucester 14 Aug 1691 (VR)?
  • Mary, b. 22:11:1661 (22 Jan 1661/2)
  • Sarah, b. 22 Feb 1661 (VR--this must be a twin of Mary, but one of the dates is off a bit).
  • Marcy (twin), b. 24 Feb 1664/5, d. Gloucester 2:1:1665 (2 March 1664/5)
  • Jane/Joane (twin), b. 24 Feb 1664/5, d. Gloucester 2:1:1665 (2 March 1664/5)
  • Joane, b. 5 Aug 1666 (VR); m. (as Joannah Kent) Gloucester 31 Dec 1684 John Pulsever/Pulsifer, probable son of Benedict Pulsifer of Ipswich, Mass.
  • John, b. 2:11 mo:1676 (VR--2 Feb 1676/7), m. Gloucester 25 July 1711 (VR) Susanna DAY. Most online accounts of this family acknowledge that this is the John Kent to whom the following piece in the History of Gloucester pertains: on 19 April 1743 Col. Epes Sargent was paid two pounds by the selectmen for four pairs of gloves "at ye burial of John Kent." This John Kent, according to this history, had a mental condition causing him to receive assistance from the town.

(7g) Josiah Kent Sr.[edit]

Josiah Kent, b. Gloucester, Mass. 31 March 1660, d. there 19 May 1725, aged about 65 y (VR), was the son of Thomas Kent and Joan Penney of Gloucester. He m. in Gloucester 17 April 1689 (VR) Mary LUFKIN/LOVEKIN, b. c. 1668, d. 1730?), the daughter of Thomas and Mary Lufkin. On 4 Oct 1692 Josiah filed a petition for administration of the estate of his grandfather, Thomas Penny, calling himself the sole heir of the estate. Gary Boyd Roberts in Ancestors of American Presidents (2009) gives Mary's death year as 1730. My only caution about this is that is the year that Mary's mother died, making the year suspicious. Some online accounts give Mary's mother's maiden name as Thomas, but I haven't seen any evidence supporting these claims, and if she's native American, then Thomas does not sound like a realistic name. Josiah rendered significant military service to the town, and in one document was titled Captain. Josiah and Mary are ancestors of U.S. President Chester Alan Arthur, through their daughter Abigail. Children, all born in Gloucester, Mass.: [91] [92]

  • Mary, b. 26 Jan 1689/90 (VR). living in 1721 by one account. A Mary Kent m. Gloucester 31 Dec 1722 Joseph Bond
  • Sarah, b. 16 Aug 1692 (VR), m. Gloucester 1 April 1717 (VR) by Rev. Samuel Thompson, John CROWFOOT, b. Springfield, Mass. 23 Jan 1692, the son of John Crowfoot and Sarah Kent. The marriage date is also recorded in the official Gloucester records as 7 April, but the one given appears to be the most accurate. No death record for Sarah has been found. An online account says John died in Brimfield, Mass (a neighborhood of Springfield) on 5 Aug 1746, but I've been unable to confirm this. Sarah and John had six known children whose births are recorded in Springfield, 1718 to 1730 under a variety of surname spellings (e.g. Crofut, Crofoot).
  • Josiah, b. 3 Aug 1694 (name not given in vital record), m. (1) Sarah MAXWELL; m. (2) Sarah Dodge (see below).
  • Abigail, b. 9 July 1697 (VR), d. Hampstead, NH 4 March 1771, m. Gloucester 21 March 1722/3 (VR) Otho STEVENS, b. Haverhill, Mass 1702, d. Hampstead 4 April 1771, aged 69, the son of John Stevens and Mary Chase. The family lived in Gloucester; Haverhill, Mass.; Hampton Falls, NH; and Hampstead, NH, and children were born in each of these places. There were ten children altogether, born 1724 to 1742. One account says Otho m. (2) Mary Dodge, but this could hardly be so, since he died a mere month after his wife.
  • John, b. 29 March 1700 (VR), may be the John bapt. Glocester 22 Oct 1704, m. Gloucester 10 June 1723 (VR) Mary GODFREY, b. Gloucester 10 June 1703, the daughter of James Godfrey and Hannah Kimball. The births of five children to this couple, 1723 to 1732, are recorded in the Gloucester vital records. In his family history of New Hampshire, Ezra Stearns adds five more children with names only, so their birth dates and places need to be determined to piece together the whereabouts of this family. One published source says that John died in 1780, but this is troublesome, because a John Kent died in Rehoboth in 1780 and another of the name died in Newburyport in 1778, neither of them being this John. [93]
  • child (of Josiah), bapt. 11 Aug 1706. This could be one of the other children.

(6g) Josiah Kent, Jr.[edit]

Josiah, the son of Josiah Kent and Mary Lufkin, was b. Gloucester, Mass. 3 Aug 1694, d. Harvard, Mass. 8 March 1767. He was married first in Wenham, Mass. on 20 Dec 1722 to Sarah MAXWELL. They had six known children together, but she likely died about 1735. Josiah m. (2) in Wenham on 28 Sep 1737 Sarah DODGE. The children of Josiah, first seven with first wife, remainder with second: [94] [95]

  • Josiah, bp Gloucester 17 Nov 1723, died young
  • Lois, b. Gloucester 8 March 1724/5 (VR), died Harvard 18 Jan 1756, aged 30
  • Eunice, b. Gloucester 14 Oct 1726 (VR), d. Lancaster, Mass. 16 Dec 1752, and m. Harvard 29 Sep 1744 Asa HARRIS, baptized in Lancaster 10 Sep 1721. Asa m. (2) Lancaster 10 Jan 1753 Abigail Bennett.
  • Josiah, bp Gloucester 8 June 1729, died young.
  • Hannah, bp Gloucester 22 Aug 1731
  • Ebenezer, bapt. 15 Oct 1732 (VR)
  • Josiah, b. Gloucester 26 Oct 1734 (VR)

with second wife, Sarah Dodge:

  • Sarah, b. Gloucester 18 June 1738, d. Roxbury, Mass. 1814, and m. (1) Harvard 3 March 1759 Abijah COLE, the son of Jonathan Cole and Judah Brown; m. (2) Samuel GARFIELD. The parentage of Sarah was confused when Frank T. Cole, in his genealogy of the Cole family, wrote that Sarah was the daughter of Jonathan Kent of Harvard. This led other researchers to assume that Sarah was the daughter of John Kent, who had a daughter Sarah of the same age as this Sarah. However, John Kent likely never set foot in Harvard. The only adult male Kent in the town that could be her father was Josiah Kent, who had a large family of whom only a few daughters survived childhood. Following the death of her second husband, Sarah went to live in Roxbury "at the home of her niece, Mrs. Crafts" according to the Cole genealogy. However, it was likely her sister who married Daniel Crafts that she went to live with. She died in the late autumn of 1814, as her obituary appeared in the Columbian Centinel on 7 Dec 1814. [96] [97]
  • Ruth, b. Gloucester 25 Aug 1739 (VR)
  • Mary, b. Harvard 22 April 1741, d. Harvard 13 Dec 1810, m. Bolton, Mass. 2 Oct 1764 Abraham SCOTT of Bolton who d. Harvard 26 Sep 1772. Mary is buried in the Harvard Center Cemetery. [98]
  • Abigail, b. Harvard 2 Aug 1744, d. Roxbury, Mass. 28 Jan 1823, m. 27 April 1775 Daniel CRAFTS, b. Roxbury 16 Aug 1752, d. Roxbury 14 Sep 1787, the son of Ebenezer Craft and Susanna White. Following the death of her husband and then father-in-law, Abigail managed the family farm and business until her son, Ebenezer, came of age. [99]

(9g) Thomas Penny[edit]

Savage 3:390; Witch trials [100]

Thomas Penny (Penney/Pinney/etc.) was born say 1610, d. c. 1692, and m. (1) say 1635 Ann _______, b. say 1615, d. Gloucester 26:11m:1667 (VR--26 Jan 1667/8); m. (2) Gloucester 15 June 1668 (VR) Agnes (TYBOTT/TIBBETTS?) Clark, d. Gloucester 23:12m:1681 (VR--23 Feb 1681/2), the widow of Edmond Clark; and m. (3) Gloucester 17 May 1682 (VR) Joan Brabrook/Brabuck, widow of Samuel Braybrook of Ipswich. Thomas's will was dated 4 Aug 1691 and proved 3 Oct 1692, naming wife Joan, daughter (unnamed) who was the wife of Thomas Kent, and grandson Josiah Kent. Thomas is a poorly documented early settler of New England, but was in Gloucester, Mass. by 1652. He lived out his life in Gloucester, buying land at Little River in 1658 and receiving a grant of land in 1679. Thomas's third wife, Joan, was one of nine Gloucester woman accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. She was accused by one Zebulon Hill, perhaps using "spectral evidence." Fortunately for her and her townswomen, such evidence was banned in October 1692, and the entire ordeal ended soon thereafter; she likely never went to trial, though it is possible that she was incarcerated. The will of Thomas Penny mentions only one child:

  • Joan, b. say 1638, m. Gloucester 28 March 1658 (VR) Thomas KENT.

(8g) Thomas Lufkin/Lovekin[edit]

Note: the early vital records generally spell the name Lovekin, with variants, and the later vital records generally use the Lufkin spelling.

Thomas Lufkin was born say 1640, d. Gloucester, Mass. 3 Nov 1708 (VR), and m. c. 1667 Mary _______, b. c. 1644, d. Dec 1730, aged about 86 (VR). Any connection with Hugh Lufkin (Salem 1654) has not been found. This uncommon name comes from the area of Dedham, in England. Abigail Kent, a grandchild of Thomas and Mary Lufkin, was reported to be one fourth native American. Because her other three grandparents are known to be English, it is possible that Mary Lufkin was a native. Thomas was first of record in New England in 1674 with the birth of his fourth child in Gloucester. He was granted six acres of land in Gloucester in 1679/80. In 1693 he was exempted from paying a poll tax because he was "aged and poor." Children, born in Gloucester:

  • Thomas, b. 9 April 1668, d. Ipswich, Mass. 17 June 1747 (GR4) or 16 July 1747 (Ipswich VR), m. Gloucester 22 Jan 1689/90 (VR) Mary MYLES, d. Gloucester 21 Nov 1690 (VR); m. (2) Chebacco 22 Dec 1692 (Gloucester and Ipswich VRs) Sarah DOWNING, b. c. 1673, d. Ipswich 21 May 1724, aged 51. Son John b. Gloucester 24 Oct 1690 (VR) and d. there 24 Nov 1690 (VR). Jeremiah, son of Thomas and Sarah, was b. Chebacco 17 May 1703 (Ipswich VR). Two ch. b. Ipswich 1693 and 1695; three more b. Chebacco 1697 to 1700 (all in Ipswich VR).
  • Mary, b. c. 1670, d. Gloucester 1730, m. Gloucester 17 April 1689 (VR) Josiah KENT. They are ancestors of U.S. President Chester Alan Arthur.
  • Benjamin, b. Gloucester May 1672. He might be the one of his name who m. Gloucester 7 Jan 1712/3 (VR) Abigail PARKER and had five children b. Gloucester 1713 to 1725. He may also be the one of his name whose probate was settled in Essex Co., Mass. in 1740. Elisabeth, d. Benjamin and "Abial", b. Gloucester 6 May 1716 (VR).
  • Joseph, b. Gloucester 16 Nov 1674 (VR), d. Gloucester 12 Nov 1730, m. Gloucester 29 Jan 1707/8 (VR) Hannah RINGE. Son John b. Gloucester 12 Sep 1713, Hannah, b. 5 Dec 1708.
  • Ebenezer, b. 18 May 1676 (VR), d. Gloucester Sep 1746, m. Gloucester 12 April 1700 Sarah AVERELL, b. Topsfield 23 March 1666[/7?]. Daughter Anna b. Gloucester 13 May 1701 (VR).
  • Abraham (twin), b. 14 Feb 1677[/8?] (VR), d. Gloucester 20 Feb 1677[/8?] (VR)
  • Isaac (twin), b. 16 Feb 1677[/8?] (VR), d. Gloucester 20 Feb 1677[/8?] (VR)
  • Abigail, b. Gloucester 9 April 1682 (VR, but year incorrectly given as 1862), m. Ipswich 30 Jan 1729 (???) John DOWSE
  • Thomas (s. Thomas and Mary) b. Gloucester 9 April 1682
  • Henry, b. Gloucester 23 May 1684 (VR), d. Gloucester 13 March 1725[/6?], m. Mercy ______. Jonathan, s. Henry and Mercy b. Gloucester 13 April 1712 (VR).
  • James (twin), b. Gloucester 9 April 1686 (VR)
  • Elizabeth (twin), b. Gloucester 9 April 1686 (VR, but mistakenly called daughter of James and Mary).

(8g) Richard Goldsmith[edit]

Abbott: Goldsmith Family of Andover (typescript)

Richard was an early settler of Wenham, Mass., where he is first of record on 23 June 1644, and where he joined the church in 1648. He was married c. 1647 to Mary, whose surname may have been Perkins. He voted to move to Chelmsford in 1655, but if he went, he soon returned to Wenham. He was killed by lightning in Wenham on Sunday 18 May 1673, at the house of Rev. Antipas Newman. After his death, his widow "Marah" married Wenham 25 Nov 1674 (VR) John Abbie. Children, born or baptized in Wenham: [101]

  • Richard?, b. c. 1644, d. c. 1673, m. Mary ____ [I'm not sure this person exists]
  • Joshua?, b. c. 1646, m. Salisbury, MA 14 Aug 1667 Mary HUNTINGTON. [where's the proof that he is of this family?]
  • Mary, baptized 15:8mo:1648 (15 Oct 1648), m. 8 Feb 1672 Richard PATCH.
  • Sarah, baptized 14:5mo:1650 (14 July 1650), m. Wenham 29 Sep 1667 (VR) Jonathan BILES.
  • Thomas, bapt. 1653/4; ment. in church record
  • John?, b. c. 1654, d. Cutchogue, Suffolk, NY April 1703, m. (1) Nov 1679 Prudence WINES, b. c. 1655, d. 17 Feb 1680/1, daughter of Barnabas Wines and Anna Eddy; m. (2) 2 May 1683 Anna WELLS; m. (3) 2 Feb 1696/7 Elizabeth TUTHILL, b. Southhold, NY 19 April 1661, d. there 1705.
  • Hannah, b. 4 March 1657/8 (VR)
  • Zaccheus, b. 1662, m. Martha HUTTON (see below).
  • Thomas?, b. c. 1670, d. Southhold, NY 6 Nov 1706, aged 36, m. Bethia TERRY, b. 13 Sep 1672, d. 11 Oct 1739, she buried Southhold Cemetery. They had five children born 1696 to 1704.

Some of the above children probably belong to the Thomas Goldsmith (poss. a brother of Richard) of Southampton, Long Island.

(7g) Zacheus Goldsmith[edit]

Essex Genealogist 22:41; NEHGR 175:239 (summer 2021): Rev. Gerrish 1710 Wenham communicants

Zacheus, the son of Richard Goldsmith and Mary (Perkins?), was b. 1662, d. Wenham, Mass. 30 Oct 1747, aged 85 (VR), and m. c. 1685 Martha Hutton, b. Wenham 30 March 1662, d. there 15 Nov 1744, aged 82 (VR), the daughter of Richard Hutton and Elizabeth Kilham. Zacheus was a weaver. Zacheus and Martha both appear on a list of 1710 communicants of the Wenham, Mass. congregation of Rev. Joseph Gerrish. Children, b. Wenham: [102]

  • Martha, bapt. 14 Nov 1686, d. Wenham 1 March 1747/8, m. (int. Wenham 4 May 1712--VR) Simon PATCH, b. 1685, d. Wenham 13 May 1749, aged 63, the son of Thomas Patch and Mary Scott. Five children are known, born 1715 to 1728.
  • Elizabeth, bapt. 25 Nov 1688, d. Beverly, Mass. 8 July 1765, aged 77, m. (1) Beverly 23 June 1715 (int. Wenham 22 Jan 1714/5) Francis QUARLES of Ipswich, b. say 1682, d. 1724. Their marriage was also recorded in Ipswich. Francis's will was proved in Ipswich 29 July 1724. Elizabeth m. (2) (intention in Beverly 14 March 1724/5) Robert HASKELL, b. Beverly 17 Feb 1692/3, buried there 9 April 1776, the son of William Haskell and Ruth West. Robert had married first in Manchester on 4 Dec 1712 Mary Leach, and with her had five children born 1713 to 1721. Robert's will, dated 3 March 1765, was probated 6 May 1776. Elizabeth had three known children with her first husband, born 1716 to 1721, two of whose baptisms were recorded in Ipswich. She had one known child with her second husband, Elizabeth, born in 1726. Elizabeth has a grave marker in the Abbott Street Burial Ground in Beverly, Mass. [103]
  • Hutton, bapt. 18 May 1690, d. 1751, m. (intention in Wenham 11 Dec 1714--VR) Miriam KIMBALL, b. Wenham 20 Feb 1691[/2?], the daughter of Ephraim Kimball and Mary Friend. Many web sources give Hutton a baptismal year of 1690, one even giving the date of 18 May 1690, but I can find no such records. Therefore the birth year of 1690 is being given as an approximation. Hutton died intestate, and the probate of his estate was dated 11 July 1751. After their marriage, Hutton and Miriam lived in Wenham, where the baptisms of four children were recorded from 1715 to 1721, but about 1722 they moved to Marblehead, Mass. where the baptisms of six children were recorded at the Second Congregational Church from 1723 to 1735.
  • John, bapt. 1 April 1694; d. Wenham 21 Nov 1695 (VR).
  • John, b. Wenham 17 Dec 1696 (VR), m. Boston 10 July 1718 Mercy YOUNG.
  • Mary, b. Wenham 14 May 1699 (VR), d. Brookline, Mass. 30 Dec 1768, m. Wenham 30 Nov 1722 John WOODWARD, b. c. 1696, d. Brookline, Mass. 15 Feb 1770, aged 73. Mary and John had only three known children, their births were recorded in Brookline, Mass. 1724/5 to 1730. It therefore makes sense that Mary died at an early age. One online account gives her death as April 1735, and another as Dec 1735, but I cannot confirm either. John appears to have continued living in Brookline, and likely remarried, with several possibilities in the Brookline records.
  • Zacheus, b. Wenham 7 April 1701 (VR), living in 1783, m. (1) Wenham 14 Dec 1724 (VR) Tabitha DODGE, b. Wenham 12 July 1710, d. Wenham 8 Nov 1726 (VR) in her 17th year, daughter of William Dodge and Prudence Fairfield. They had a son, William, b. 1725. Zacheus m. (2) 15 May 1729 Mehitabel KIMBALL, b. Wenham 9 Oct 1707, d. Ipswich 15 Feb 1777, the daughter of Caleb Kimball and Sarah Safford. Zacheus lived at Wenham, Ipswich and Andover, Mass., and also briefly at Medford. He had one child with his first wife and seven more with the second, with all births recorded in Wenham. He likely moved to Ipswich after 1742 when his youngest child was born, but by 1745 when his oldest son was married there. In 1783 he resided in Ossipee, NH where his sons Isaac and John had settled. There is a confusing probate cover page that gives a probate date for Zacheus Goldsmith of 1756, but that cannot refer to this Zacheus. The death record of his second wife calls her the wife of Zacheus, not the widow. Furthermore, he and his second wife were subjects of a warning out in Medford in 1764. The first wife, Tabitha, is buried in the Dodge Row Cemetery in Beverly, Mass., and had a grave marker that was transcribed and published in the Essex Institute Collections. However, the marker appears to have since been lost to the elements. It appears that Zacheus, wife Mehitabel, and son Isaac went to Medford, Mass. to live, coming from Ipswich, but were warned out of Medford. In Medford's book of Warnings Out is written the following: "Also Zaccheus Goldsmith & Mehetabel his wife Isaac their son & a lad Nam'd Benjam. Pursel which persons came from Ipswich to Medford April: 24th. 1764". [104]
  • Richard, b. Wenham 28 Dec 1705 (VR), (bapt 16 Dec ??), m. Wenham 23 June 1731 Hannah DODGE (see next).

The children of Hutton and Miriam Goldsmith, first four baptized in Wenham, remainder baptized in Marblehead:

  • Jeminah, bapt 8 Sep 1715
  • Nathannill, bapt 20 Jan 1716/7, m. Marblehead 4 Feb 1742 Abigail Webber
  • Mary, bapt 6 Jan 1718/9
  • Miriam, bapt 5 Feb 1720/1, m. Marblehead 12 Dec 1746 Richard Craft
  • Samuel, bapt 10 March 1723, may be the one who m. Marblehead 25 Feb 1768 Elizabeth Bowden
  • Benjamin, bapt 7 March 1725, d. young
  • Sarah, bapt 3 July 1726
  • Martha, bapt 9 Feb 1729, m. Marblehead 29 Sep 1749 George Clerk
  • Benjamin, bapt 5 Sep 1731
  • Ebenezer, bapt 8 June 1735

The child of Zacheus Goldsmith and first wife Tabitha Dodge:

  • William, b. 8 Oct 1725, m. Ipswich 11 April 1745 Margaret Cogswell.

Children of Zacheus with second wife Mehitabel Kimball:

  • Benjamin, b. 8 Sep 1730
  • Sarah, b. 16 Feb 1731/2
  • Mehitable, b. 28 Feb 1733/4, likely the one who m. (int. Ipswich 7 Feb 1756) Thomas Woodward of Brookline.
  • Tabitha, b. 8 July 1735. A "Mrs." Tabitha Goldsmith m. (int Ipswich 19 June 1761) Moses Harris. Also, a Tabitha Goldsmith m. Ipswich 17 Jan 1771 William Burnham.
  • John, b. 23 Feb 1736/7, m. Ipswich 11 March 1762 Martha Lamson. He was a soldier of the Revolution and served in Capt Dodge's company of Col. Little's regiment. In 1777 he settled in Ossipee, NH.
  • Elizabeth, b. 2 Oct 1739
  • Isaac, b. 29 Oct 1742, was still living with his parents in 1764 when warned out of the town of Medford, Mass.

(6g) Richard Goldsmith, Sr.[edit]

Richard Goldsmith, the son of Zacheus Goldsmith and Martha Hutton of Wenham, Mass., was b. Wenham 28 Dec 1705, d. Littleton, Mass 26 Jan 1756, and m. Wenham 23 June 1731 (VR) (int. Littleton 23 June 1725??) Hannah Dodge, b. 1705, d. Littleton 1 July 1760, aged 55. A Hannah Dodge was baptized on 3 June 1705 at the Wenham Congregational Church, but the record does not give names of parents, or even if this was a child or adult. Hannah, by one account, was a daughter of a Nehemiah Dodge (but I don't find such a person who could be her father, but could be her brother), by another account was a daughter of Antipas Dodge, and by yet other accounts was the daughter of Josiah Dodge and Sarah Fiske. The family structure suggests that the last choice is the best supported; also, Richard and Hannah named a son Josiah, which name does not appear to come from the Goldsmith family. Richard and Hannah have grave markers in the Littleton Old Burying Ground. Children, all born or baptized at Wenham: [105] [106]

  • Hannah, bp 19 March 1731/2, d. Walpole, NH 28 Sep 1824, m. Littleton 11 Mar 1755 John MEARIAM, b. (Littleton 5 Nov 1725, d. Walpole, NH 10 Oct 1814, son of John Merriam and Hannah Hall. They moved from Littleton to Walpole, NH in 1782. [107]
  • Abigail, bp 3 Feb 1734, buried Rindge, NH 29 Sep 1769, m. Littleton 13 Nov 1755 Nathaniel RUSSELL, Jr., b. 27 Dec 1733, d. Rindge 1 Jan 1812. Nathaniel m. (2) 26 March 1770 Anna (Worcester) Thayer, widow of Eliakim Thayer and daughter of Joseph and Ann Worcester; she d. 23 Sep 1829, aged 89. Nathaniel is buried with a grave marker in the Old Meeting House Cemetery in Rindge. [108] [109]

(5g) Richard Goldsmith, Jr.[edit]

Richard, the son of Richard Goldsmith and Hannah Dodge of Wenham and Littleton, Mass., was born or baptized in Littleton, Mass. 31 Dec 1738 (this is a baptismal date according to the Littleton Vital Record, but a Bible record says this is the date of birth), d. Harvard, Mass. 12 Mary 1824, and m. Littleton 20 Jan 1763 Sarah DIX, daughter of Jonathan Dix and Sarah Shattuck of Littleton. He and Sarah lived in Littleton, and then moved to Harvard, Mass. They are buried in the Harvard Cemetery, and had ten children, the first five born in Littleton, and last five born in Harvard: [114]

  • Richard, b. 2 Oct 1763, d. Harvard 11 May 1836, m. Harvard 1 July 1802 Rachel COOK, b. Sep 1773, d. in Harvard 11 Aug 1812, aged 38 y 11 m. They have existing grave markers in the Harvard Center Cemetery. [115]
  • Sarah, b. 18 Dec 1764, d. Littleton 29 Dec 1766, and buried in the Old Burying Ground in Littleton. [116]
  • Timothy, b. 31 Aug 1766, d. Harvard 26 Jan 1819, and married in Belchertown, Mass. in 1794 Mary WALKER. One record gives the date as 8 May 1794 and the wife's name as Pally Walker; another record gives the marriage date as 22 May 1794, and the wife's name as Mary Wilkin. Find-a-grave contributor Nancy Walker has provided the following clarification (from Mark Doolittle's Historical Sketch of the Congregational Church in Belchertown, Mass.): Timothy was married to Mary "Patty" Walker, b. Belchertown, MA 14 March 1772, d. Belchertown 22 Feb 1849, the daughter of Capt James Walker and Esther Shumway. They had four sons: James, John Sherman, Alonzo Hall, and George Richard who is buried in Wayne Co., Michigan. The widow Mary is not found on any census records after her husband's death, and was likely living with her children or other family members. Timothy is buried in the family plot in the Harvard Center Cemetery. [117]
  • Sarah, b. 17 Apr 1768, d. Harvard, MA 25 Dec 1847, m. Harvard 20 March 1792 Jacob FAIRBANK, b. Harvard, MA 6 May 1762, d. Harvard 5 July 1831, the son of Amos Fairbank and Lucy Gates. Sarah and Jacob have a monument in the Harvard Center Cemetery. [118]
  • John, b. 17 Apr 1770, d. Harvard 21 Sep 1798, and m. Harvard 27 Dec 1791 Moriah HOUGHTON, the daughter of Elijah Houghton and Mercy Whitney of Harvard. He was "killed by fall of stick of timber," when only 28 years old. Following his death, his widow married John Conant as his second wife. John and Mariah had four children together, and Mariah had two more with her second husband. Mariah is buried with her second husband in Stowe, Mass., while John is buried in the Harvard Center Cemetery. [119]
  • Anna, b. 27 Jan 1772, d. Montpelier, VT 4 Sep 1852, m. Harvard 8 Apr 1793 Asa COLE, the son of Abijah Cole and Sarah Kent. Anna had eleven children, then became widowed while most of them were young. She raised the large family as a single parent, then in 1838, long after Asa's death, she married Amory Pollard of Bolton, MA, whom she survived. Amory, b. Harvard, Mass. 8 Sep 1770, d. Bolton, Mass 28 Aug 1848, was the son of Thaddeus Pollard and Submit Maynard, and had several children with two previous wives, and appears on the federal censuses in Bolton from 1800 through 1840. In 1830 he is listed under "Emery" Pollard, and in 1840 under "Amery" Pollard. In 1850 Anna was widowed but still living in Bolton with two of her step-children. She died in Montpelier, VT while visiting her youngest daughter, Susan. Anna is buried in the North Cemetery, Westmoreland, NH with her first husband. [120]
  • Sherman, b. 28 Oct 1773, d. Island of Tobago 23 Jan 1796. A monument was erected for him in the Harvard Center Cemetery, but it is uncertain if his remains were interred here. [121]
  • Theodore, b. 7 Aug 1775, d. Harvard, MA 22 Mar 1859, m. Harvard 11 Sep 1798 Mercy HAPGOOD, b. Harvard 15 Feb 1779, d. Harvard 31 Oct 1850, the daughter of Shadrach Hapgood and Elizabeth Keep. Theodore appears on every federal census from 1800 to 1850 in Harvard, Mass, as well as the 1855 state census. He loved to read. He and Mercy had four children, and are both buried in the Harvard Center Cemetery with extant grave markers. [122]
  • Mary "Molly", b. 14 Apr 1777, d. Harvard, MA 4 Aug 1853, m. 23 Nov 1797 Capt. Oliver HILL, b. 17 Sep 1771, d. Harvard 3 March 1847. Mary and Oliver share a tall monument in the Harvard Center Cemetery. [123]
  • Thomas, b. 18 Mar 1779, nothing more known.

(8g) Richard Hutton[edit]

Essex Genealogist 22:36-42

Richard Hutton was born c. 1620 (several depositions put his birth year here or at 1621), d. Wenham, Mass. 22 June 1713, in 96th year (VR) and m. (1) c. 1649 Elizabeth KILHAM, b. c. 1630, daughter of Austin Kilham and Alice Gorball. Richard m. (2) Susanna (Moore) Dutch, daughter of Richard Moore and Christian Hunter, and widow of Capt. Samuel Dutch of Salem. After Richard's death, Susanna m. (3) (int 11 April 1714) John Knowlton of Ipswich. Richard was in Wenham, Mass. by about 1649, as he claimed knowledge in 1678 of William Green's lot for about 29 years, and in 1699 deposed he had knowledge of a boundary for 49 years. His first appearance in the public record is as a juror in 1652. He took the oath of fidelity and was sworn in as constable of Wenham in Nov 1653. In late 1675 Richard was a soldier who served in a campaign during King Philip's War. Administration of Richard's estate was given to his son-in-law, Joseph Fowler. The inventory included debts to Zaccheus Goldsmith and Richard Fowler for taking care of him in his old age, and it is likely that he lived his final years in the home of his daughter Martha Goldsmith. His daughter Elizabeth Fowler received land in Amherst, NH in 1728 for her father's service during King Philip's War. Children:

  • Elizabeth, b. c. 1650, d. Wenham 22 May 1734, aged about 84 (VR), m. Joseph FOWLER, d. Wenham 10 Feb 1717/8 (VR). Three children have been identified, born at Wenham from 1678 to c. 1681.

(9g) Austin Kilham[edit]

NEHGR 56:344-6; EIHC 49:210-16; TAG 67:53-4

Austin, sometimes Augustine, the son of Henry Killam/Kilham and Alice Goodale, was born say 1595, d. Wenham, Mass. 5:4mo:1667 (VR--5 June 1667), and m. Wrentham, Norfolk 8 Sep 1619 Alice GORBALL/GORBOLDE, b. c. 1597 (aged 40 in 1637), d. Wenham 18:5mo:1667 (VR--18 July 1667). Austin was likely born in either Dennington, Suffolk, or Wrentham, Norfolk, both in England. On 11 May 1637 Austin was examined as a passenger for New England, being, "desirous to goe to Salam in the New E." He sailed with his wife Alice and a few children aboard the Mary Anne of Yarmouth, though the examination document and passenger list are incomplete. At a [Salem?] town meeting on 7 Aug 1637 he was admitted as an inhabitant and given a quarter acre lot. He later exchanged a ten-acre lot on 26 June 1638, in Salem, and on 17 April 1639, with William Browne, was engaged by that town to keep the goats for a year. Early in 1640 the Killams moved to Dedham, and Austin and Alice were received into the church there on 28 Aug 1640. In late 1648 or 1649 the family moved to Wenham where Killam was a juror for several years, and also served as constable. In 1653 the people of Wenham contributed to the support of Harvard college, and Austin with his sons Daniel and John contributed, with only four of 25 people giving more than Austin. Also in 1653, when Rev. John Fiske left Wenham to settle at Chelmsford, Austin and six other heads of families had planned to go as well, but Austin and one other changed plans, and stayed in Wenham. In 1658 a suit was broght against Austin, his son Daniel, and his son-in-law Richard Hutton by William Browne to recover rent for a farm in Wenham. In 1660 Austin was on a committee of three to build a meeting house, which was done upon his land. His will was dated 2 June 1667 and proved in the Ipswich Quarterly Court 24 Sep 1667. His inventory was dated 11 June, amounting to 122 pounds. Alice's will was dated 3 July 1667, and filed the same time as her husband's. Her inventory was dated 10 July 1667. Children:

  • Daniel, bapt. Dennington 15 March 1620[/1?], d. Wenham 21 March 1699/1700 (VR), m. (1) Ipswich Oct 1648 Mary SAFFORD, b. c. 1628, d. c. 1677, daughter of Thomas Safford of Ipswich; m. (4) c. 1697 Mary Maxcy, d. 1 May 1726, widow of Alexander Maxcy. Daniel lived in Wenham, then Ipswich, and then back to Wenham. Daniel had nine children, all with his first wife, born from 1649 to 1668.

  • William, b. say 1608, liv 1685, m. c. 1635 Elizabeth _______, b. say 1615. A 28 May 1629 letter from the Governor and Deputy of the Masssaschusetts Bay Company in London was sent to John Endicott and his council in New England with a request from "Mr. Whyte, the minister," to "show all lawful favor and respect unto the planters that came over in the Lyons Whelpe out of the counties of Dorset and Somerset, that you would appoint unto William Dodg, a skillful and painful husbandman, the charge of a team of horses." The Lyons Whelp sailed from Gravesend 25 April 1629, stopped at and then departed the Isle of Wight 11 May, and landed at Salem, Mass. on 29 June 1629. Though he came over in 1629, he isn't of record in New England until 25 December 1636 when admitted to the Salem church. Family tradition says he returned to England to procure a wife and a claim a gift from his father. He settled in Salem, and was living there in 1656, but in 1668/9 he was called of Beverly, Mass. He was a juryman on numerous occasions, and also held positions as surveyor and tithingman. He was living on 12 May 1685 when he made a testamentary deed, giving his dwelling house and other property to his heirs. There were three known children baptized in Salem from 1636 to 1642.
  • Michael, b. say 1612, married and had children. In 1670 he was church warden in East Coker, Somerset. Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines (1931) 2:315-17; Dodge Gen; WikiTree website (mar. & bapt. records for Edith (Brayne) Dodge)

Richard, the son of John and Margery Dodge of Middlechinnok, Somerset, England, was born say 1602, d. North Beverly, Mass. 15 June 1671, and m. Stoke sub Hamdon, Somerset, England Edith BRAYNE, bapt. East Coker, Somerset, Eng. 15 May 1608, d. 27 June 1678, "aged 75", daughter of Edward Brayne and Elizabeth Symmes. Richard lived with his family in East Coker, Somerset, and was first of record in New England in Oct 1638, when he was received as a Salem inhabitant, and soon given a ten-acre lot. He and Edith were received as members of the Salem church in 1644, but became members of the Wenham church before 1648, when John Fiske was pastor. In a 1653 list of subscribers to Harvard College, he gave the largest sum of the 21 on the list. It was his land on which the Dodge Cemetery at Dodge Row was established. His will was dated 14 Nov 1670 and proved 29 June 1671. He left an estate valued at 1764 pounds upon his death, a very large amount. Children:

John, the son of Richard and Edith Dodge, was baptized at East Coker, Somerset, England 1631, d. 1711, and m. Sarah ______, b. 1645, d. Beverly 8 Feb 1705/6, aged 60 (VR). John was named in the 1635 will of his grandfather, John Dodge, of Middlechinnock, Somerset. John probably came to New England with his father about 1638, and settled in a part of Beverly, Mass. that was annexed to the town of Wenham. He built a saw mill and perhaps a grist mill as well on Mill River at Wenham Neck. John was elected deputy to the General Court on at least one occasion, and several times was a Selectman. Children:

(7g) Josiah Dodge[edit]

Source showing Josiah descends from Richard, not William [126]; Dodge family in Gen Hist of NH: [127]; White Gen:26,50-51

Josiah was born in Beverly, Mass. 4 June 1665, d. Wenham, Mass. 19 Jan 1714/5, and m. (1) Beverly 18 Dec 1690 Lydia FISKE, who apparently died very soon. He m. (2) c. 1692 Sarah FISKE, b. Wenham 14 March 1672/3, d. there 17 March 1729/30, the daughter of Thomas Fiske and Joanna White. Josiah is named in the will of his father-in-law. He lived in Wenham along Longham Brook, and had a small farm, tannery, and part of a saw-and-grist mill. He sold a part of his properties in 1713 to William Dodge. Josiah and wife Sarah both have extant grave markers in the Dodge Row Cemetery in Beverly, Mass. Children, born in Wenham (since not all children have birth records, the order of the daughters is as they appear in the division of his estate, dated 31 Jan 1714/5): [128]

  • Mary, b. c. 1692, named first among the daughters in the 31 Jan 1714/5 division of her father's estate. As the presumed oldest child of Josiah, it is uncertain from which wife she was born.
  • Sarah, b. c. 1694, d. Beverly 14 Dec 1718, and married in Beverly 29 Nov 1717 Mark DODGE, b. Beverly 21 Oct 1694, d. 1787, the son of Edward Dodge and Mary Haskell. Sarah was named in the 31 Jan 1714/5 estate settlement of her father. Mark is likely the one of his name who m. (2) Beverly 25 Jan 1721/2 Elisabeth Woodberry. He is also likely the Mark Dodge of Beverly whose will was dated 29 Oct 1765 and proved 2 April 1787. Sarah had one child, Eleanor, before her death; Mark had several children with his wife Elizabeth found in the Beverly vital records.
  • Joanna, called Joan in her birth record, b. 12 April 1696, m. Beverly 19 Dec 1717 John GRIDLEY of Beverly. She is the only living child of Josiah who was NOT named in the division of his estate, dated 31 Jan 1714/5, unless: the transcription of her father's estate that I've seen gives the name Anne Rebecca, and it seems quite reasonable that this is actually two daughters, Anna and Rebecca, where Anna is short for Joanna. This would make sense because they are sequential daughters in the family.
  • Josiah, b. 16 Aug 1698, living in 1772, m. 27 Jan 1718 Prudence DODGE, b. Wenham 27 Jan 1700/1, likely died by 1772, daughter of William Dodge and Prudence Fairfield. As the oldest son of his father, he was given a large share of his estate, which was divided on 31 Jan 1714/5. He was very active in the buying and selling of real estate, and owned land in Essex and Worcester counties, and lived in Lunenburg, Mass. for a while. He was still living in 1772 when he deeded property, but his wife, who had apparently cosigned earlier transactions, was not mentioned, and had likely died by then. Josiah and Prudence had ten known children, born from c. 1719 to c. 1738, some or all of whom are found in the Wenham vital records.
  • Thomas, b. 30 Nov 1700, d. Wenham 18 Sep 1736 in his 36th year, m. Wenham 23 June 1724 Sarah PORTER, b. Wenham 6 Jan 1705/6, d. there 1795, the daughter of John Porter and Lydia Herrick. They had seven children born 1725 to 1736. Thomas was named in the 31 Jan 1714/5 division of his father's estate. Administration of his estate was given to wife Sarah on 15 Nov 1736, with estate valued at over 2000 pounds. Sarah's death year comes from a published account of the Dodge family; it means she lived as a widow for nearly 60 years. They had six children born from 1725 to c. 1736.
  • Rebecca, b. 21 March 1702/3, was named in the 31 Jan 1714/5 division of her father's estate.
  • Hannah, bapt. Wenham 3 June 1705, m. Richard GOLDSMITH. Hannah, as a minor, was mentioned in the 31 Jan 1714/5 division of her father's estate.
  • Jemima, b. 14 Nov 1707, named in the 31 Jan 1714/5 division of her father's estate. A Jemima Dodge died in Beverly in 1746.
  • Abigail, b. 12 June 1710, d. Wenham 7 June 1713.
  • John, b. 1 July 1712, d. Wenham 19 Nov 1714

(8g) Ralph Dix[edit]

Gen Mag.:83-90[136]

Ralph Dix, b. say 1620, d. Reading, Mass. 24 Sep 1688, m. say 1655 Esther _______. It is possible that he was the son of "widow Dix" who was granted six acres of land in Ipswich on 5 Feb 1637/8. He was not the son of Anthony Dike of Salem, a belief widely held. He was a fisherman, and first of record in Ipswich, Mass. on 4 Dec 1643 when it was agreed that soldiers who served during Indian conflicts would receive 12 pence a day, and Ralph Dix, as one of the 20 soldiers named, was to receive three shillings. He was obviously a young man at the time, and therefore born in the 1620 to 1625 timeframe. He was not named with others as a Commoner (proprietor) of Ipswich in March 1641/2, so may have been a minor at the time, or living elsewhere. Even though the first known child of Ralph and Esther was born in 1658/9, they were married by 1656 when "Ester Dicks" was a witness in a case. The family moved to Reading, probably about 7 July 1663 when Ralph Dix purchased property there. On 30 Oct 1665 "Ester Dix" and her children were recommended to the Reading church. Ralph was fairly well to do late in his life, based on the amounts he was taxed and the contributions he had made. His will was dated 4 March 1686[/7?], but not probated until 31 March 1701. Children:

  • Sarah, b. say 1657, m. (1) 21 July 1679 Edward BROWN; m. (2) _______ LAWTON.
  • John, b. Ipswich 12 March 1658/9, m. (1) Lydia BURNAP; m. (2) Anna (KIBBE) Fitch.

(7g) John Dix[edit]

Gen Mag.:88-90

John Dix, the son of Ralph and Esther Dix, was born in Ipswich, Mass. 12 March 1658/9 and d. Reading, MA 12 May 1745, aged 87. His death is also recorded in Wakefield, Mass. as being May 1745. He m. (1) Reading 30 June 1692 Lydia BURNAP, b. Reading 8 April 1667, d. there 9 June 1699, the daughter of Robert Burnap and Sarah Browne. He m. (2) Reading 28 May 1700 (also recorded as 25 May) Anna (KIBBE) Fitch, b. Concord, MA 20 Feb 1670 (as Anna Keeby), d. 1748, the daughter of James Kibbe and Hannah Cary. Anna was the widow of Joseph FITCH, b. Reading 26 Feb 1662/3, d. there 9 Jan 1694/5, son of Joseph Fitch and Hannah Sweetser (Switcher/Swicher). Anna was still living on 20 May 1745 when she, Samuel Dix, and Eason Dix, husbandmen, all of Reading, signed the bond of administration on the estate of John Dix, and she was named administratrix. Administration of her estate was given to Benjamin Wesson on 19 Dec 1748. Anna had four known children with her first husband; John had five known children with his first wife; and John and Anna had seven known children together: [137]

Children of Anna Kibbe with Joseph FITCH, all born Reading, Mass.:

  • Joseph, b. 3 Sep (or 26 Sep) 1689, d. 10 Nov 1694

  • Zachariah, b. 24 Feb 1692/3, m. Newbury, Mass. 14 Aug 1718 Abigail DAVISON, b. c. 1699, daughter of Maj Daniel Davison and Abigail Coffin. A portrait of Abigail is in the possession of the Fitchburg, Mass. Historical Society, and there is also an extant portrait of her husband, but its location is not known by me. Zachariah and Abigail had seven known children, born 1720 to 1732.
  • Joseph, b. 4 Feb 1694/5, d. Reading 16 March 1754, m. Boston, Mass. 15 Jan 1718/9 Margaret CLARK, b. Boston 4 April 1697, d. there 28 Aug 1748, the daughter of Timothy Clark and Sarah (Richardson?). Following Margaret's death, Joseph m. Joseph and his first wife Margaret had 14 children, born 1718 to 1739. Joseph has an extant grave marker in the Old Burying Ground, Wakefield, Mass. [138]

Children of John Dix with Lydia Burnap, all b. Reading, Mass.:

  • Lydia (twin), b. 24 Dec 1693, d. Reading 24 Dec 1693, aged 1 day
  • John (twin), b. 24 Dec 1693, d. Reading 27 Dec 1693

  • Elizabeth "Fanny", b. 28 April 1699, d. Stoneham, MA 10 Jan 1774, m. in Stoneham c. 1728 (an online account give 29 Aug 1728) Samuel HOLDEN, b. Reading 23 July 1699, d. Stoneham 12 Oct 1762, the son of Samuel Holden and Anna Larabee. Only the birth date for Elizabeth is found in the published vital records. Samuel's birth date and both death dates come from Ezra Stearns's Genealogical and Family History of New Hampshire, 2:882 (1908). They had eight children born Stoneham 1729 to 1741, seven of whom are found in the published Stoneham vital record.

Children of John Dix with Anna Kibbe, all b. Reading, Mass.:

  • Anna, b. 10 April 1702, d. Reading 5 Dec 1736, m. Wakefield, Mass. 6 July 1732 William BRYANT, b. Reading 19 April 1702, d. Petersham, Mass. 1777, the son of William Bryant and Rebecca Arnold. William and Anna had two children whose births were recorded in Reading: Ann, b. 19 July 1733, and William, b. 24 Nov 1735. Following Anna's death, William m. (2) Newbury, Mass. 17 March 1736/7 Sarah Huse of Newbury. William and Sarah had seven children, born 1738 to 1756. The administrator's bond on the estate of William Bryant was dated at Petersham, MA 4 Dec 1777, with his son William being a signatory.
  • Samuel, b. 7 Feb 1705/6, d. c. 1755, m. Reading 17 March 1730 Hannah BATCHELDER, b. Reading 22 May 1709, daughter of Nathaniel Batchelder and Hannah Ellsley (who both have/had grave markers in the Old Burying Ground, Wakefield). Samuel and Hannah had eight known children born 1731 to 1751. On 20 May 1745 he signed the bond of administration on his father's estate. Samuel was dead by 23 Feb 1756, when the will of his father-in-law, Nathaniel Batchelder, mentioned his daughter Hannah, widow of Samuel Dix. Many online sources give his death date as 21 Sep 1802, but that belongs to his son, Samuel Dix, Jr.
  • Mary, b. 16 April 1708
  • Jonathan, b. 2 May 1710, d. 24 Dec 1804, m. Sarah SHATTUCK (see below). Jonathan is buried in the Plains Cemetery, Boscawen, NH, and Sarah is very likely buried in the town cemetery in Littleton, Mass. where her father has a monument. [139]
  • James, b. 20 Nov 1712, d. Reading 7 May 1745 (also recorded in Wakefield as May 1745), m. Reading 28 March 1744 Amey PARKER, b. Reading 18 Jan 1720, d. Reading 6 Oct 1748, the daughter of Jonathan Parker and Barbara Ellsley. They had a son, James, Jr., born late in 1744, but James, Sr. died in 1745, and his widow died three years later. On 5 Dec 1748, guardianship of James Jr. was given to Jonathan Parker, likely Amey's father, with Ebenezer Parker also signing the bond. The child was in his fifth year. On 2 Oct 1749, Phineas Parker was given guardianship of the child, with Benjamin Wesson also signing the bond. The child was now in his sixth year. On 22 Jan 1759, Jonathan Eaton was named as guardian of the child, with Daniel Parker also signing the bond, and the child in his 14th year. The child has not been further traced. Find-a-grave memorials have been created for James and Amey in the Laural Hill Cemetery in Reading where her parents are buried. [140]
  • Eason, b. 21 Dec 1715, d. Reading 11 Jan 1809, aged 93. He apparently never married. On 20 May 1745 he signed the bond of administration on his father's estate. Since the name is unusual, it is not unlikely that he is the Eason Dix enumerated on the 1776 military census in Brookline, Hillsborough Co., New Hampshire. In 1790 he was enumerated on the federal census in Groton, Mass., living alone.
  • John, b. c. 1717, d. Reading 7 Nov 1723 (no aged given in the death record). The assumption made here is that John was the youngest child, and was therefore born some time between 1716 and 1723, inclusive. His mother was born in 1670, so John was far more likely born about 1717, when his mother was 47, rather than 1723, when his mother was 53.

Here's a blurb from internet, taken from a published work: "Jonathan, son of John Dix by his second wife, was born at the Dix homestead in Reading, Massachusetts April 11, 1710. He was a tanner of Littleton, Massachusetts, moved to Boscawen, New Hampshire, where he died at the residence of his son Timothy, December 24, 1804 at the great age of ninety-four years, eight months, and thirteen days. He is said to have served in the Rev. War, first as a private in Capt Samuel Gilbert's company, Col. Prescott's regiment, and later as a lieutenant and captain. Anna and Joseph had two daughters, born 1780 and 1782, and then he died sometime soon thereafter. In 1795 Anna moved to Boston, and became the first female instructor at the Orphan Asylum there. John and Mary apparently lived in the house of his father, which is still standing today. It is surprising that grave markers have not been found for this couple; the History of Middlesex County, Massachusetts says they lived and died under an elm tree that Mary planted. They had nine children, born 1773 to 1790. [149]
  • John, b. 30 Mar 1753, d. Littleton 27 Nov 1811, m. Littleton 21 June 1792 Huldah WARREN, b. Littleton 31 March 1773, d. Clinton, NY 31 Mar 1832, daughter of Sampson and Huldah Warren. Edward is said to be the son of Edward and Deborah Kibbe of Exeter, England, bapt. 11 May 1611, but that would mean a 14-year error in the death age on his gravestone. Also, his wife's maiden name is widely reported as being Partridge, without any evidence. The Kibbe family is first of record in New England in 1645 when Mary was affiliated with the Boston church. In 1662 Edward was appointed Clerk of Market for the Muddy River section of Boston (later Brookline?). He served intermittently as surveyor of highways from 1666 to 1683. William Shattuck was born in England c. 1622 (probably earlier), d. Watertown, Mass. 14 Aug 1672, aged 50, and m. c. 1642 Susanna _______, d. Watertown 11 Dec 1686. William's provenance is unknown, but he may have been the son of widow Damaris Shattuck who was admitted to the church at Salem in 1641, and he may have been the brother of Samuel Shattuck. He was a weaver, and in his will bequeathed his loom and accessories to his son William. His will was dated 3 August and proved 29 August 1672. (8g) William Shattuck[edit]

Shattuck Gen:74-76, 87-92

William, the son of William and Susanna Shattuck, was b. Watertown, Mass. 1653, d. there 19 Oct 1732, aged 79, and m. c. 1677 Susanna RANDALL, b. say 1657, d. 8 May 1723, daughter of Stephen Randall and Susanna Barron. William was a weaver, but also noted as a brickmaker in the 1685 Watertown records. He was often a commissioner, and served on many committees. His will was dated 11 Jan 1727[/8?] and proved 4 Dec 1732. He has an extant gravestone in the old Watertown Cemetery. Children:

(7g) Benjamin Shattuck[edit]

Shattuck Gen:89-90, 108-114

Benjamin, the son of William Shattuck and Susanna Randall of Watertown, Mass., was b. Watertown 30 July 1687, d. Littleton, Mass. 1763, and m. c. 1709 Martha SHERMAN, b. Watertown and bapt 1 Sep 1689, d. in Littleton, the daughter of Joseph Sherman and Elizabeth Winship of Watertown. Martha's brother, William Sherman, was the father of Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and other great state papers associated with the founding of the United States. Benjamin graduated from Harvard College in 1709, and became a school teacher. He moved from Watertown to Littleton, Mass. about 1716, became ordained as a minister of the gospel on 25 Dec 1717, and was the first minister in Littleton. He preached for 15 years, then retired from the ministry. Benjamin has a monument in the Old Burying Ground in Littleton. One genealogical conundrum that exists with Benjamin is that there was a contemporary Benjamin Shattuck, son of Philip, also born in Watertown, with similar birth and death years. This other Benjamin lived in Cambridge, Mass., and was a constable there, and has surviving probate records dated in 1767. A monument for Benjamin, still standing, was erected for him in the Littleton Cemetery, but it erroneously calls him the son of Philip, which is easily disproven by a 1748 deed. Children, first four b. Watertown, remainder born Littleton: [156]

  • Stephen, b. 10 Feb 1709/10, buried Templeton, Worcester, Mass. 4 July 1801, m. 3 Sep 1734 Elizabeth ROBBINS of Westford. Web sources give Elizabeth a death year of 1788, without reference, and no birth record of parents for her have been confirmed. At the age of 65, Stephen "shouldered his gun and marched to Concord, to share the dangers of that eventful day, and followed the retreating enemy to Cambridge." Stephen's name is included on a memorial plaque in the Common Burial Ground in Templeton. Stephen and Elizabeth had five known children, born at Littleton 1736 to 1749. [157]
  • Martha, b. 7 Jan 1711/2, d. Littleton 5 Oct 1768, m. 1729 Samuel TUTTLE, b. Ipswich, Mass. 19 May 1709, d. Littleton 11 Dec 1780, son of Simon Tuttle and Mary Rogers. Martha and Samuel both have grave markers in the Littleton Old Burying Ground. They had nine children, born at Littleton from 1730 to 1744. [158]
  • Benjamin, b. 8 Dec 1713, d. Groton, Grafton Co., NH Oct 1790, m. Littleton 13 Nov 1740 Dinah (______) Hunt, b. c. 1713, d. Littleton 17 May 1791, aged 78. Benjamin and Dinah had five known children, born 1741 to 1751. Because Dinah was aged 27 upon her marriage to Benjamin, the question arises as to whether she had been previously married. A Samuel and Dinah Hunt of Littleton had four children together before Samuel died in 1739. It appears quite plausible, then, that Dinah is the widow of Samuel Hunt.
  • Timothy, b. c. 1715, d. North Haven, CT c. 1776, m. Middletown, CT 5 Nov 1740 Desire HALL, b. Wallingford, CT 19 June 1719, daughter of Nathaniel Hall and Elizabeth Curtis. They had seven children whose births were recorded in Middletown 1741-1756.
  • William, b. 1 Jan 1717/8, d. Jaffrey, Cheshire, NH Jan 1806, aged 88, m. Littleton 20 Nov 1750 Abigail REED, b. Lexington, Mass. 2 April 1731, d. Bethlehem, Grafton, NH Feb 1820, "aged 87.," daughter of Peter Reed and Abigail Blodgett. William and Abigail had eight children, born c. 1751 to c. 1770. In 1769 the family left Littleton, Mass. and moved to New Ipswich, NH. He was many years a selectman there, and also served as moderator and became a delegate to the Provincial Congress. In about 1794 he bought a farm in Jaffrey, NH. There are many Shattucks buried in the Old Burying Ground in Jaffrey, but of a later generation, and William is not listed.
  • Sarah, b. 13 Dec 1719, d. Littleton 30 Sep 1775, m. Reading 30 Sep 1739 (18 June 1739 per Gen.:111) Jonathan DIX. Sarah is buried in the Littleton Old Burying Ground; Jonathan is buried in Boscawen, NH. [159]
  • Ebenezer, b. 22 Feb 1721/2
  • Susanna, b. 8 April 1724, d. Lunenburg, Mass. 25 Sep 1789, m. Littleton 22 Jan 1750 Caleb TAYLOR, b. Littleton 23 May 1724, d. Lunenburg 27 Aug 1791, aged 67y 5m 3d, son of Dea. Caleb Taylor and Mary Witt. Susanna and Caleb both have grave markers in the North Cemetery in Lunenburg. Despite the calculation from Caleb's age at death, the record of his birth in the Littleton records gives the date as 23 May. They had four known children born 1751 to 1763. [160]
  • Elizabeth, b. 13 Feb 1725/6, d. Littleton 1 Dec 1808, m. 26 Feb 1745/6 Elias TAYLOR, b. Littleton 23 Feb 1721/2, d. Littleton 21 Nov 1797, son of Caleb Taylor and Mary Witt. They both have grave markers in the Littleton Old Burying Ground. They had six known children born 1747 to 1760. [161]
  • Jonathan, b. July 1728, d. 19 Feb 1744/5, aged 16y 7m, has a grave marker in the Littleton Old Burying Ground. [162]
  • Moses, b. June 1733, d. 13 Dec 1737, aged 4y 6m, has a grave marker in the Littleton Old Burying Ground. [163]

(10g) Elizabeth Randall[edit]

Shattuck Gen:76: Bond's Watertown:409-10; Cutter:4:1799

Elizabeth Randall, possibly the widow of a John or a William Randall, was born c. 1592 and d. Watertown, Mass. 24 Dec 1672, aged 80. The following men of Watertown are likely her sons:

  • Stephen, b. c. 1627, m. Susanna BARRON.
  • John, Sgt., b. say 1630, d. 16 June 1680, m. say 1656 Susanna _______, d. 14 May 1673. He served in King Philip's War. He was called "Sr." in his will, dated 22 April and proved 5 Oct 1680. His will mentions six children (and names five of them), but John Randall (d. 1690) is likely a seventh child of his. The children were born from c. 1657 to 1672.

(9g) Stephen Randall[edit]

Shattuck Gen:76; Kempton Anc:129

Stephen Randall, b. c. 1627 (aged 44 on 8 Jan 1671/2), d. Watertown 26 Feb 1707/8, m. Watertown 14:10mo:1653 (14 Dec 1653) Susanna BARRON, born say 1634, living in 1684, but not in husband's will of 1697/8, daughter of Ellis and Grace Barron. Stephen may have been the son of Elizabeth Randall, d. Watertown 24 Dec 1672, aged 80, and he may be the Stephen Randall baptized at Romford, Essex on 1 June 1628, son of William Randall. Stephen's will, dated 13 Jan 1697/8, was proved 19 April 1708, naming his three daughters. Known children:

  • Elizabeth, b. say 1654, m. _______ CODMAN, named in father's 1697/8 will.

(10g) William Palmer[edit]

GDMNH:525-7; EIHC 53:243-4; NEHGR 69(1915):284-5; 75:79-80

William Palmer, b. say 1580, d. 1647, likely the one "of Ormsbie" who m. Ransworth, Norfolk, England 30 June 1608 Mary STAMFORTH, as his first wife; m. (2) Ann _______, d. Newbury, Mass. 18 Oct 1665. He is also likely the William Palmer of Ormsby, St. Margaret who was cited there 28 July 1636 for his absence from church, and was excommunicated after not serving the citation on 28 Sep following. A William Palmer, gentleman, is shown on the rent roll of Ormesby manor in 1610. It is noteworthy that almost all early writers on William Palmer say he was in Watertown, Mass. by 1636, but Robert Charles Anderson in The Great Migration Directory (2015), p 252, indicates that the William Palmer who was in Watertown was the man of that name who went to Yarmouth, and then to Newtown, Long Island. The subject William Palmer is first of record in Newbury, Mass. in 1637 and made a freeman of Hampton (now NH) on 13 March 1638/9 where he later held some minor offices. On 10 March 1645/6 he deeded his Newbury and Hampton properties to his daughter and son-in-law, Martha and John Sherman, in consideration for his daughter's release of land in Great Ormsby, Norfolk, England, in which she had an interest of 105 pounds. William was living on 30 May 1647, according to GDMNH, but the same source says his son Christopher was acting for Widow Ann Palmer in 1647, which, if accurate, means he died that year. EIHC:244 says he was dead by 6 Oct 1647, and NEHGR 69:284 says that on that day William's widow was by then the wife of Francis Plumer of Newbury. Ann's marriage record to Francis Plummer in Newbury is dated 21 March 1649, long after the 1647 deed shows they were married. Children of William Palmer with first wife, born in England:

  • Edward, b. say 1615, had a grant of land in Hampton adjoining that of his father in 1640.
  • Martha, b. say 1617, d. Watertown 7 Feb 1700/1, m. say 1637 John SHERMAN, bapt. Great Horkesley, Essex, England 3 Sep 1612, d. Watertown 25 Jan 1690/1, the son of John Sherman and Grace Ravens.
  • Christopher, b. c. 1626, d. 30 June 1699, m. 7 Nov 1650 Susanna HILTON, b. c. 1634, d. 9 Jan 1716/7, aged 82, daughter of Edward Hilton. They had three known sons.

Child likely with second wife, Ann:

  • Joseph, b. c. 1643, d. Bradford, Mass. 8 Feb 1715[/6?] in 72nd year, and m. Newbury 1 March 1664 Sarah JACKMAN. Joseph chose brother Christopher and Walter Roper of Ipswich as his guardians in 1661. His will was dated 5 Feb 1714[/5?]. They had nine children given in GDMNH.

(9g) Edward Winship[edit]

GM 7:481-8

Edward Winship was b. c. 1612, d. Cambridge, Mass. 2 Dec 1688, aged about 76, and m. (1) c. 1637 Jane WILKINSON, daughter of Isabel Wilkinson; m. (2) c. 1651 Elizabeth PARK, b. c. 1631 (aged 4 in July 1635 when enrolled as a passenger aboard the Defence with her sister and parents), d. Cambridge 19 Sep 1690 "in 58th year", daughter of Richard and Margery Park. Giles Bittleston of Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England wrote a letter, dated 1 Sep 1638, to his Puritan brethren in New England, including "Edward Winshop," so this can be assumed to be the English home of Edward. Edward settled in Cambridge, Mass., and based on his becoming a Massachusetts Bay freeman on 4 March 1634/5, he must have arrived in the colony by 1634. Edward was very active in the affairs of Cambridge and the colony. He was a Cambridge deputy to the General Court on many occasions from 1663 to 1686, a Cambridge selectman for many years from 1637 to 1684, and held many other offices. His will was dated 16 Sep 1685 and proved 1 Oct 1689. His inventory, taken 21 Dec 1688, totaled 640 pounds. The will of his second wife, Elizabeth, was dated 18 Oct 1689 and proved 7 Oct 1690. Edward and second wife Elizabeth both have extant gravestones in the Old Burying Ground in Cambridge. Children with first wife, Jane, born in Cambridge: [165]

  • Sarah, b. April 1638, m. Cambridge 29 Sep 1659 James HUBBARD.
  • Mary, b. 2 July 1641, m. Concord, Mass. 8 Nov 1664 Boaz BROWN.

  • Elizabeth, b. 15 April 1652, m. Watertown 18 Nov 1673 Joseph SHERMAN (see).

  • Samuel, b. 24 Oct 1658, m. Cambridge 12 April 1687 Mary POULTER.
  • Joseph, b. 21 June and bapt. 25 Aug 1661, m. Watertown 24 Nov 1687 Sarah HARRINGTON, daughter of Robert Harrington.
  • Margery, b. 10 Dec 1664, bapt. Cambridge 5 Feb 1664/5, m. Cambridge 12 May 1687 John DIXON.
  • Mehitable, b. 14 Nov and bapt. 17 Nov 1667, living 18 Oct 1689 when named in her mother's will; no other record found.

(10g) Richard Park[edit]

GM 5:360-3

Richard Park was born c. 1602, d. summer 1665, and m. (1) say 1625 Margery ________, b. c. 1595; m. (2) after 1656 Sarah (COLLIER) Brewster, bapt. St. Olave, Southwark, Surrey, England 30 April 1616, living 1679/80, daughter of William Collier and Jane Clark, and widow of Love Brewster who she had m. in Plymouth, Pl. Colony 15 May 1634. On 11 July 1635, "a miller Richard Perk" aged 33; "Margery Perk" aged 40; "Isabell Perk", aged 7; and "Elizabeth Perk", aged 4, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England aboard the Defence. They settled in Cambridge in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and on an 8 Feb 1635/6 list of those with houses in town, "Richard Parke" was among those at Fresh Pond. Richard held only a few minor offices in town, and did not leave a lot of records. His will was dated 12 July and proved in October 1665, with inventory taken 4 Aug 1665. Apparently Richard settled the part of Cambridge that later became Newton, Mass., and a monument for many of the early settlers of this area was erected in the East Parish Burial Ground; it includes the name of Richard Park, the year he supposedly settled in "Newton", 1647, and his death year, 1665. Children, all with first wife:

  • Thomas, b. say 1626, m. Cambridge 1 Dec 1653 Abigail DIX, daughter of Edward Dix of Boston. Why this son was not included on the ship passenger list is not known.
  • Isabel, b. c. 1628, m. c. 1648 Francis WHITMORE.
  • Elizabeth, b. c. 1631, m. c. 1651 Edward WINSHIP.
