Cultural symbolism[edit]
Since ancient China, there are many praises for the pine, bamboo, and plum which comes from the natural ability of these plants to tenaciousness and even flourish in harsh environments. They are the symbols that encouraged people to persevere in adversity, providing inspiration through consolation and determination. Consequently, these three plants became common subjects through the ages in Chinese painting and calligraphy. Because artists bring different experiences and feelings to these subjects, their works show a variety of forms, expressions, and sentiments about these three plants.[1]
In Japan the three plants are known as 'the three auspicious friends'[2]
