Part of the 1995 Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone season

Medicane Celeno was one of the most well-defined and well-studied Medicanes ever recorded. The 1st medistorm and 1st medicane of the 1995 Mediterranean Hurricane Season, it formed from a frontal wave to the west of Greece on January 13th, getting the classification of a subtropical cyclone. It developed more convection around its center, and transitioned to a tropical cyclone the next day, and got named Medistorm Celeno. Warm waters, low wind shear and the storms small size allowed Celeno to quickly intensify, reaching Medicane intensity on January 15th, and reaching its peak intensity the next day, with winds of 75 mph and a pressure of 975 millibars, before quickly weakening while moving south. It made landfall as a Medistorm on the 17th of January, and quickly dissipated on the 18th.

Meteorological history[edit]

In the middle of January, in 1995, a cold front moved through the Mediterranean. On the 13th, a frontal wave developed along it, with a low-level circulation developing later west of Greece. Convection began to develop around the circulation, and it organized due to the warm waters, being classified as a subtropical cyclone later that day. By the 14th, the storm had become better defined, with convection kept close enough to the center long enough for it to be classified is Medistorm Celeno on the 14th of January. It's small size let it strengthen quickly, and the storm began to develop an eye surrounded by organized convection. Around this time, on January 15th, it reached Medicane strength. It continued to strengthen, reaching a peak intensity of 75 mph, and a pressure of 975 millibars, equivalent to a low-end Category 1 hurricane. It had very organized convection, a well-defined eye, spiral banding, and very great outflow. As it moved south, cooler waters and land interaction made it more disorganized, and the storm weakened faster than it strengthened, dropping below Medicane strength on the 17th, and making landfall in Libya the same day. It rapidly weakened, dropping down to a medipression, and degenerating to a remnant low on the 18th of January.
