The University of Newcastle Football Club, commonly referred to as UNI. Is a Australian football club based in the Newcastle, NSW suburb of Callaghan. The club began unofficialy in 1962 when students were invited to join the NSW Technical College team which competed localy. This club would go on to affiliate with the University Of Newcastle as the 'University Of Newcastle Mens Soccer Club' after the Technical College campus at Tighes Hill became The University Of Newcastle. There home games are played at Ray Watt Oval, or on occasion at any other of the University's sporting fields which are maintained by NUSport.
The clubs history is not well documented, but it is known the club took its first title when they won the Inter-varsity competition in 1966. Over the years the clubs home and away colors have changed time and time again, currently they play in a majority white with navy blue trim.
In 2009 the club returned to the Interdistrict Division One competition, after winning the minor premiership in both Interdistrict Division Two and Interdistrict Division Three over the previous years two years. In the 2009 season they finished 2nd to Mayfield United Senior Football Club, and lost the Grand Final on Penalties to Mayfield United Senior Football Club.
At the end of the 2010 season, its was decided by Newcastle Football that a new competition would be created and sit between Interdistrict Division One and the NewFM 1st Division, which itself leads to the NBN State League. This new competition is titled the Zone Premier League. The University of Newcastle Mens F.C. was choosen as one of the in-augural 10 teams to make up the new ZPL.

Players[edit]
Thanks to the club being based on the campus of the University, it makes it more appealing to foreign students, and over the years this has resulted in some exceptional talent playing for the clubs teams. It also results in a very multicultural environment where it is more than likely that a team will consist of players from 3 or 4 nationalities, and a couple of different religions. This also has the detriment that some of the best players are only on 6 month study visa's and return home before the end of season.
In the 2009 season that nations of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, South Africa, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Holland and Brazil were represented.

Home Ground[edit]
The University of Newcastle Football Club's home ground is Ray Watt Oval. This includes facilites of Ray Watt Pavilion and a secondary ground 'No 5 Oval'. Ray Watt Oval itself is the maximum length and width dictated by FIFA legislation and has extensive underground drainage.
Many believe this ground to be one of the best in the region, rivaling that of a professional club, possibly why it is shared as a training ground for the local national team the Newcastle Jets, who play in the Hyundai A-League.
While the ground at Ray Watt is impressive, it lacks lighting. This means that there training must be conducted elsewhere, at 'No 3 Oval', which is also where the club play any night matches required.
