"Shin Takarajima" (Japanese: 新宝島, Hepburn: Shin Takarajima, "New Treasure Island") (Japanese pronunciation: [ɕintakaɾadʑima]) is a song by Japanese rock band Sakanaction. The song was written and composed by band frontman Ichiro Yamaguchi and released on September 30, 2015 by Victor Entertainment (NF Records) as the band's eleventh single. The song was the band's first single after a year of inactivity following the release of "Sayonara wa Emotion/Hasu no Hana", who temporarily ceased activities in light of bassist Ami Kusakari's pregnancy. The song was featured in the soundtrack for the live-action film Bakuman and departs from the style of Sakanaction's other albums, featuring pop influences, together with an alternative rock and dance music style. The song was released on the greatest hits album Sakanazukan in 2018.

The title of the song was borrowed from Osamu Tezuka's Shin Takarajima, whose work Yamaguchi came across while researching manga for musical inspiration. The CD jacket on both the normal release and the initial limited edition displayed typography of the title; releases of the deluxe limited edition featured artwork of Bakuman character Miho Azuki, drawn by the series' artist, Takeshi Obata. The single was highly critically acclaimed, with some critics praising the sound, rhythm, and melodic elements as "a new direction for the band",[1] and others finding it to be a return to the band's roots.[2] Shin Takarajima charted at number one on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, as well as ranking as high as 9th place on the Oricon Singles Chart. The Recording Industry Association of Japan has also certified the digital download and physical disc (gold disc) platinum.

The song's music video was directed by Yūsuke Tanaka, and was produced as an homage to the Shōwa-era music and variety show Dorifu Daibakushō. The music video was nominated for Best Traditional Japanese Group Video in the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards Japan ceremony. A separate karaoke music video was created by Bakuman director Hitoshi Ohne, designed to evoke the feel of karaoke videos produced from the end of the 1980s to the beginning of the 1990s. The video was a self-parody of Bakuman, telling the story of a romance between a boy manga artist and a girl. Yamaguchi takes on an acting role in the video. Sakanaction hosted its first live performance of Shin Takarajima during the SAKANAQUARIUM NF Records Launch Tour 2015-2016, and has since performed the song on musical programs such as COUNT DOWN TV and Music Station, and at events such as COUNTDOWN JAPAN.

In 2017, an English language cover was released by by Japanese singer BENI, and an original music video different from the music video produced by Sakanaction was produced. In 2018, the band Hello, Happy World in the game "Bandori! Girls Band Party!" covers, and songs are recorded in the same game.

Presentation and production background[edit]

Background and release[edit]

"Shin Takarajima" is a song that appears in the live-action film Bakuman.[3][4] In a magazine interview, Bakuman producer Genki Kawamura spoke on the decision to commission Sakanaction to perform music for the film, as well as making "Shin Takarajima" the theme song:[3]

I feel that without good music, a movie can't be successful. [...] As a producer, I spent a lot of effort going through musicians. [...] Sakanaction has elements of rock and dance music in their style, and it was those two things I felt that "Bakuman" the movie needed.

In another interview with frontman Ichiro Yamaguchi and film director Hitoshi Ohne, production staff asked Ohne why he chose Sakanaction to perform Bakuman's theme song and its background music:

When professional composers create "background music," it doesn't always seem to fit the original work. When I work with instrumentalists or artists, though, their music fits perfectly. So I singled out all the artists I thought could make good background music, and Sakanaction was one of them.

Another impetus that drove Ohne to choose Sakanaction was the rock festival he attended, TAICOCLUB, where he saw the band perform.[4] Ohne described the shock he felt and the idea it gave him: "The audience was so wrapped up in their music. If I chose them to perform the music for Bakuman, it might turn into something interesting."[4][3] The band and the production staff entered into a partnership following this event. The band was tasked with performing the theme song and the movie's background music before casting had been decided.[5][6]

Shin Takarajima was announced during a Sakanaction launch party, NIGHT FISHING, which took place on September 11, 2015. The band declared the creation of their own label, NF Records, under the banner of Victor Entertainment.[7] The label's first album and single were also announced, and at this time, Sakanaction unveiled its new look.[7] Shin Takarajima was the band's 11th single, and on September 30, 2015, saw a CD release under the NF Records label. The song was released in three formats: normal edition (CD), initial limited edition (CD and DVD), and limited collector's edition (2 CDs and DVD, Bakuman Box). The bonus CD included in the limited editions, called Motion Music of Bakuman, featured every song from the film.[8][9] "Shin Takarajima" was recorded in the band's greatest hits album Sakanazukan, which was released on March 28, 2018.[10]

Production[edit]

"Shin Takarajima" drew inspiration from Bakuman, embodying the story of a young man and woman striving to become manga artists. The theme of the song was "to draw a line."[11][12] The song itself includes lyrics that highlight the "sweat and tears that come from creating," a feeling shared among both manga artists and musicians.[13][12] After requesting the song approach a second topic, Director Ohne gave Shin Takarajima another title: "The Song of (One's) Self-Effacing Graduation."[12] The film Bakuman includes a scene during the credits where the two protagonists forgo attending their graduation ceremony to talk in a classroom. Ohne requested this theme be worked into the song to lend Shin Takarajima more relevance to the movie.[12]

While the song was in development, frontman Yamaguchi read manga outside of his normal purview for the purpose of conducting research. When questioned, he explained, "I felt I needed to study and learn more about making theme songs and background music for manga. I tried to discover the origins of Japanese manga, and that was when I found Osamu Tezuka's works." Yamaguchi chose to incorporate Tezuka's Shin Takarajima as the title of the song. The song's original title was not "Shin Takarajima," but "Touch," taken from a scene in Bakuman where the two protagonists write "touch" on their hands and high-five (In Japanese, "high-fiving" is known as ハイタッチ, or high touch.) This resulted in a conflict due to the Bakuman manga being published in Weekly Shōnen Jump, which also published a manga known as Touch in its Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine. When brought to the attention of Bakuman production staff, the original title was scrapped, and "Shin Takarajima" was chosen.

Though Shin Takarajima was announced to be releasing after the album Natsukashii Tsuki wa Atarashii Tsuki: Coupling & Remix Works, planning for the song began ahead of the album. In a magazine interview published in July 2015, Yamaguchi described the lyrical process as "the hardest fight [he] had ever gone through," requiring almost 6 months to complete the process. Added to this was an initial deadline set for May 2014, coupled with completion of the song's karaoke version set for fall. As the deadline for the film approached, work on the album was further delayed by bassist Ami Kusakari's pregnancy and loss of inspiration by keyboardist Kiemi Okaza. These combined circumstances resulted in the delay of the album and resulted in difficulties in Shin Takarajima's production. Difficulties ceased when Yamaguchi was inspired by Ohne's dedication to Bakuman; Yamaguchi was quoted as saying, "I began to feel that I couldn't slack off on my own work. I wanted to create something that would satisfy him."

After receiving a script for Bakuman, Yamaguchi described feeling as if he were being encouraged by the director, pushed to create a bright song. The relationship between frontman and director changed how he approached the song.[11] However, in an interview conducted by music magazine Talking Rock, Yamaguchi emphasized his potential audience: "I knew high school and university students were a clear, distinct market. I also understood that what they were after was bright, impactful music. I decided that I should make a song that invited the feeling of leaving everything behind for a brand new story."

Sakanaction included several lines related to their September 2015 launch party, NF, in Shin Takarajima. One line, "I'll take you along, just as you are right now," holds the meaning of, "We'll go with NF, just as it is right now." NF was launched on Yamaguchi's idea that the band wanted to create a space for their listeners, as well as create music that embodied their positive and public feelings. Composition for Shin Takarajima proceeded on this idea, and after the NF launch party, Yamaguchi was purportedly able to finish the lyrics for the song. NF's second event, NF #02, was held in November 2015 and featured a theme taken from Shin Takarajima's lyrics, titled SEN.

「新宝島」は、テンポは、75(Free)-158で構成されており[14][15]、調号は変ロ長調/ト短調で構成される[16][17]。2015年9月の近作、シングル『さよならはエモーション/蓮の花』や『グッドバイ/ユリイカ』が作者である山口にとっての感情みたいなものを表現した「陰」というのに対し、今作は「陽」というイメージをもとに制作された。それによって曲調が近作とは異なるアッパーなポップ・ミュージックの部分をも持ったオルタナティヴ・ロックソング、兼ねては冒険心のあるダンス・ミュージックに仕上がっている。イントロでは、オルタナティヴ・ロックを持つ展開がされ、サカナクションの原点回帰もなされている[18][19]。また、「新宝島」のイントロ部分の作成中にメンバーがゴダイゴが製作する楽曲と様々な観点で似ていると感じたことにより、楽曲がコミカルな展開になり、ポップ調の曲になったとも山口は語っている[18]。

楽曲はAメロとサビしかなく[20][17]、曲調そのものは、1980年代から1990年代初頭を彷彿とさせるチャイニーズ感のあるレトロなシンセサイザーのサウンドと打ち込み感のあるリズム・パターン、ミニマルな曲構成とシンプルな構成である[19][21][22]。歌詞は、リスナーに新たな景色を見せようとする言葉と、耳に残るサビのフレーズや映画『バクマン。』の世界[23]、NFとリンクした歌詞が特徴的である[22]。「新宝島」は、もともとバンドの製作中であった楽曲が合わさって完成されている。サビは「蓮の花 (曲) [en]」、Aメロは「多分、風。」で構成されている[14][15]。

プロモーション[edit]

発売前後のプロモーション活動では、2015年9月4日、TOKYO FMをキー局にJFN38局をネットし、放送しているラジオ番組『SCHOOL OF LOCK!』で山口らが担当しているコーナー、『サカナLOCKS!（ARTIST LOCKS!）』にて独占先行フルオンエアーが行われた[8][24][25]。放送まで映画『バクマン。』の予告編などで楽曲の一部を確認することができたが、フルオンエアーは初の機会であった[25]。また、同番組では2016年2月に「新宝島」の『SAKANAQUARIUM 2015-2016 "NF Records launch tour"』で行われた公演のライブ音源が初の放送がされた[26]。「新宝島」の発売後の記念イベントでは、作品が発売された5日後にあたる2015年10月4日にタワーレコード、札幌ピビォ店にて握手会が行われた[27]。楽曲は、映画『バクマン。』のプロモーションとしてメディアで使用された他に、リクルートが発行するフリーペーパーの求人情報誌『タウンワーク』およびストリーミング音楽配信サービス、Spotifyのテレビ・コマーシャルソングとして使用された[28][29][14][15]。

通常盤および初回限定盤のジャケットでは、このシングルで文字通り、新たな地平「新宝島」を探す続けるというバンドの姿勢を大胆な「新宝島」というタイポグラフィで表現。楽曲の細部にやどる懐かしさも感じられるデザインとなっている[24]。

豪華初回限定盤のジャケットアートワークでは、『バクマン。』原作者である小畑健にイラストの描きおろしをオファー。イラストのみならず、小畑自身の作業現場や小畑自身が描く手元まで含めた写真がデザインに組み込まれ、文字通り、楽曲のテーマである「線を描く」瞬間が切り取られた表現となっている。また、仕様が映画『バクマン。』BOXということから、小松菜奈演じる『バクマン。』ヒロインの亜豆美保が制服を着用した姿で描かれている[8]。また、映画『バクマン。』BOXに封入される『新宝島』のディスク・ジャケットには、イラストの原画および下書きもデザインに組み込まれている[8]。小畑が漫画を描く過程をジャケットにすることにより、音楽家にとっての音楽を生む苦しみ、漫画家にとって漫画を産み出す苦しみを重ね合わせたバンドならではの独自の表現が完成された外装となっている[24]。

評論家による批評[edit]

「新宝島」は複数の音楽評論家からの評価を受けている。音楽雑誌『WHAT's IN?』のライター、本間夕子は、「のっけのこの高揚感。全編を貫くこの太い振動感。最初の一音で耳を引っつかれ、フェードアウトの余韻で一息にもってかれる。」とコメント。楽曲をJ-POP非ず、日本のポップミュージックのいいところを持ったオリジナリティのあるサウンドメイクであると指摘した[30]。『MUSICA』のレビュアーの小野島大は「新宝島」の曲の仕上がりを「苦労を感じさせないポップでキャッチーな曲」であるとし、「レトロなシンセの音色、歌唱性の強いフレーズやメロディは、一回りして初期のサカナクションを思わせる。そして、言葉少なで、少しずつ変移しながら繰り返されるメッセージが、先へ先へ進もうという彼らの意欲を示す力強くポジティブなメッセージとなっている。」と「新宝島」の構成や詞について指摘した[19]。また、同誌の2016年1月号では、「新宝島」を「コアなファンのみならず一般層へもアプローチをする共感と共振を得た楽曲」として、2015年のベストディスクのうちの1枚に選出している[22]。『EMTG MUSIC』は、「新宝島」をクリアでエネルギッシュなシングルとして位置付け、楽曲は「サカナクションの歌であると同時に、映画『バクマン。』の感動を増幅させている」と映画『バクマン。』への影響も述べている[31]。また、レビューで『EMTG MUSIC』および音楽雑誌『CDJournal』は「新宝島」のバンドサウンドを「新しいポップ」と指摘している[28][31]。

受容とチャート成績[edit]

オリコンの調査によると、『新宝島』は2015年9月30日にフィジカルとしてリリースされた後、発売初週に推定1万8909枚売り上げ、オリコンシングルチャート2015年9月第4週付のチャートランキングで9位を記録した[32]。同年10月分のオリコンシングル月間チャートでは、25位を記録し[33]、前回2015年9月度のランキングでは50位圏外であったチャートをジャンプアップさせた結果となった[34]。Billboard JAPANのチャートのうち、『Japan Hot100』では、2015年9月第4週にあたる2015年9月28日付のチャートで28位を記録し、チャートデビュー[35]。2015年10月12日付のチャート成績では27位ジャンプアップし、1位を獲得[36]。『Japan Hot100』2015年間チャートでは、30位を記録した[37]。また、『新宝島』が2015年10月12日のチャートで成績1位を獲得したことについて、Billboard JAPANの栗本斉は『新宝島』と同日にリリースされたA.B.C-Z、『Moonlight walker』との市場競争について「サカナクションのようにメディアミックスでどう盛り上げるかを考えなければいけない」とサカナクションのメディア活用とジャニーズのプロモーションの戦略を解析。キャッチーな楽曲や映像を作ることが前提にし、ロック・バンドにおいてのメディアミックスの重要性を唱えた[38]。『Japan Radio Songs』では、2015年9月第3週にあたる9月21日付のチャートで58位を記録し、チャートデビューをした[39]。2015年9月28日付のチャートでは、3位までジャンプアップ[40]。2015年10月5日付のチャートでもジャンプアップを記録し、1位を記録[41]。2015年10月12日・19日付のチャートでも1位を記録し、3週連続1位を獲得した[42][43]。2015年10月26日のチャートでは、1位順位を下げ、2位を記録[44]、2015年間チャートでは、13位を記録した[45]。Billboard Japanのチャート『Japan Top Sales』では、2015年10月12日のチャートで6位を記録し、チャートデビュー[46]。日本レコード協会によるゴールドディスク認定では、10万枚以上フィジカルとして出荷されたとして、2015年11月に認定を受けている[47]。また、2017年1月には音楽配信を25万ダウンロード以上されたシングルトラックとしてプラチナディスク認定を受けた[48]。

カドカワによる消費者動向調査『eb-i』によると、2015年11月2日から3日までに47都道府県の1万1317人の10代から60代までの男女に対するインターネット調査において、「新宝島」は「2015年に1番思い出に残っている曲」の1つとして、7位にランクインしている[49]。

有線ラジオ放送USENが2015年12月7日に発表した『2015年間USEN HITランキング』で『新宝島』は18位を獲得した[50]。

背景とリリース、内容[edit]

表題曲「新宝島」のミュージック・ビデオは、「夜の踊り子」「『バッハの旋律を夜に聴いたせいです。』」「さよならはエモーション」などのミュージック・ビデオを手掛けた田中裕介が監督を務めた[51][52][53]。『ドリフ大爆笑』などの昭和の歌番組やバラエティ番組をオマージュしたレトロ感あふれるセットや仕掛けが象徴的な映像になっており[21]、今作「新宝島」が、サカナクションというバンドにとって、まさに再始動の楽曲ということで華々しいオープニング感あふれる演出となっている[51]。2015年9月25日には、映像が動画サイト『GYAO!』内『映画『バクマン。』特集』で先行公開され[52][53]、翌日、9月26日にYouTube上、サカナクション公式チャンネル『NFRecords sakanaction』内で同動画が公開された[54][55]。また、Youtube上での公開同日には公開に合わせ「ドキュメント」や「montage」などYouTube未公開であったミュージック・ビデオや、ビクターエンタテインメントの公式チャンネルなどにて、既に公開はされていたものの、『NFRecords sakanaction』内で公開されていなかったミュージック・ビデオも一挙公開となった[54]。

ミュージック・ビデオの評価[edit]

「新宝島」のミュージック・ビデオは賛否両論の評価がされている。週刊誌『週刊文春』のコーナー「考えるヒット」の中で近田春夫は、バンドのミュージック・ビデオをE-girlsと比較対象にした上で「2拍4拍に合わせて[ダンスの]リズムをとるのがもう既に様になっていないのだ。[中略] 老婆心ながら、ここまで切れの悪い“動き”を見せられたらファンのひとだって気持ち冷めるよって。[中略] まさかそういう演出ってことないっすよね?」とコメントしている[56]。MTVジャパンが主催するミュージック・ビデオの祭典、『MTV Video Music Awards Japan』では、「新宝島」のミュージック・ビデオを最優秀邦楽グループビデオ賞にノミネートしている[57]。

カラオケ映像[edit]

「新宝島」のミュージック・ビデオは、通常版とは別にカラオケ映像があり、映画『バクマン。』の監督、大根仁が撮影指揮をとった作品が存在する[58]。この作品は実際にLIVE DAMなどのカラオケ映像に使用されているほか、初回限定盤および豪華初回限定盤（『バクマン。』BOX）に収録されている。本作はレトロ感にあふれるサウンドに仕上がった「新宝島」を1980年代末から1990年代初頭の音楽シーンを象徴するカラオケ映像化したものであり、大根にとってカラオケ映像が自身の初心であったことから、大根が自らメガホンをとっただけでなく、当時の機材、演出手法、大根が当時にタッグを組んだカメラマンまで招聘。1990年代に全盛であったカラオケ映像の質感を忠実に再現した。内容は、大根が映画『バクマン。』をセルフパロディーし、映画のシーンを再現したかのようなシーンも随所にみられており、バーテンダー役として山口も出演している[59][60]。

あらすじ[edit]

漫画家を目指す男性とそれを応援する女性のラブストーリー。ある日、公園で男が紙を飛ばしてしまい、その紙を女性が拾ったところから2人は出会う。それをきっかけに、男はその紙を拾った女性をモデルに漫画を描くが、男が応募した漫画のコンテストに落選したことから2人の愛は崩れ始める。男は夜中放浪をしたものの、正気を取り戻し、道中で転びながらも彼女を探し始める。女性も同様に彼氏を探しており、2人は会うことが出来たものの、赤信号となった横断歩道で男性は車にひかれ、亡くなる。その後、女性はバーでお酒を呑みながら、バーテンダーに亡くなった男性などの事を話す。すると、バーテンダーの男性は出したカクテルの上にのせた女性の手に自分の手を重ね合わせ、女性に何かを言い、彼女を微笑ませる。そして、バーテンダーと女性が腕を組み、夜の街に出るところで映像はフェードアウトし、終了する[60][61]。

ライブ・パフォーマンス[edit]

「新宝島」は、バンドが2015年10月から翌年3月まで公演をしたライブ、『SAKANAQUARIUM 2015-2016 "NF Records launch tour"』のアリーナ公演で、ライブ・パフォーマンスが初めて行われた[62]。アリーナ編最終公演である2015年10月27日の5年ぶりとなった日本武道館での公演では、1万1000人を動員し[62]、セットリストのラスト、17曲目に「改めまして、僕達、私達、サカナクションです」という山口の挨拶の後、「新宝島」が演奏された[62][63][64][65]。また、同公演のパフォーマンスはバンドの映像作品『SAKANAQUARIUM 2015-2016 "NF Records launch tour" -LIVE at NIPPON BUDOKAN 2015.10.27-』に収録され、2016年5月25日にDVDおよびBlu-ray Discとしてリリースされた[66][65]。2015年12月28日より4日間開催されたロック・フェスティバル、『COUNTDOWN JAPAN』の3日目、12月30日の公演ではサカナクションがEARTH STAGEのトリとして出演[67]。パフォーマンス中、バンドは『SAKANAQUARIUM 2015-2016 "NF Records launch tour"』の台湾と幕張メッセの追加公演を発表し、セットリストのラストに「新宝島」を演奏、アンコールに「Aoi (曲) [en]」を披露した[67]。

「新宝島」は、複数のアーティストによりカバーされている[73][74][75]。日本の歌手、BENIは、楽曲をシティ・ポップ調に英語歌詞カバーした[74][75]。カバーされた楽曲は2017年9月13日にBENIがリリースしたカバーアルバム『COVERS THE CITY』に収録された[76][74][75]。楽曲は2017年7月15日に放送されたTBS系の音楽番組『音楽の日』[74]や2017年9月9日に放送されたNHK名古屋放送局の音楽番組『Uta-Tube』[77]でも披露されている。

BENIは、サカナクションが製作したミュージック・ビデオとは別に独自にカバー・バージョンのミュージックビデオを製作している[74][75]。「失った未来」をコンセプトに[74]、未来と過去が行き来するような新しい解釈を生み出そうと製作された[75]ミュージック・ビデオでは、神奈川県横浜市のみなとみらいやスクラップ場で撮影され[75]、スタイリッシュな衣装に身をまといながらのダンスを見ることができる[78]。

2018年にはゲーム『バンドリ!ガールズバンドパーティー』内のバンド、ハロー、ハッピーワールド!がカバーをし、同ゲームに楽曲を収録されている[73]。
