Hi Birkenhead01, and welcome to Wikipedia! Wikipedia's policies and guidelines highly discourage editing or even participating in discussions with articles if you have a personal conflict of interest with the article subject - especially with articles that are about you. Editing articles that you have a conflict of interest with typically causes many issues and other problems. First, it's nearly impossible for you to add content that reflects a neutral point of view. Instead, I would suggest that you add your concerns to the article's talk page so they can be discussed with other users. You can also use the Tea House to ask questions as well. @Birkenhead01 You are wise not to edit the article directly. Generally the correction of indisputable facts is allowed, but matters of opinion are guarded jealously by the community. An editor who is not you might argue successfully that the material is uncited, and should go, potentially being added to a different part, not the lead, when a reference is forthcoming.

Articles on one's self are really best ignored. I suspect that is difficult to do, but they truly should not influence one's career since they are intended (not always successfully) to record what is said in reliable independent sources about the subject of the article. 🇺🇦 Fiddle^Timtrent Faddle^Talk to me 🇺🇦 10:03, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Birkenhead01 - I fully agree with Timtrent's statement: It was a very wise move on your part to refrain from getting directly involved with the article, and seek help and information from the community and work with them instead. You'd be surprised (or... actually, probably not...), but I'd say in my experience, a good 97% of people that have a conflict of interest with a certain article, or that have extremely personal, emotional, or radical views on certain article subjects - they choose to try the other route. They'll ignore Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, make edits to "fix" the article and turn it into exactly what they want it to say, claim ownership if it and tell people to stand back and get away, respond with two middle fingers toward other users' calm and genuine attempts to assist and diffuse the situation, edit war and revert everyone's attempts to undo the article changes, and on and so forth. They can get pretty noisy... that is, until I step into the room. A flick of a switch here, a push of a few buttons here, here and (at times) there, and the disruption is done. ;-) I don't like going that route with users, but their behavior at times leaves me wondering if they wanted to get blocked. ;-) ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 20:46, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

If someone is adding synonyms for the word "said" that you believe makes the statement appear loaded or implies contentious intent, you're of course welcome to be bold - modify the article and fix it with what you believe is a better synonym. If the user changes your modification back, start a discussion on the article's talk page. Do not engage in edit warring with other editors, where back-and-forth reverting of each other's changes occur. The best way to prevent edit warring is to never revert another editor's changes that were made in order to revert your changes. Discuss your concerns with the user and try and work things out and make a decision together as to what synonym should be used instead. See Wikipedia's policies and guidelines on consensus, the bold, revert, discuss cycle, and how to resolve disputes with others. They are great resources that will provide you with the assistance and guidance you're looking for. To protect yourself from issues like this in the future, I recommend using a password management tool for all of your accounts and login credentials. I personally use LastPass, pay for it annually, and I've rarely had problems. There are obviously other password managers out there; just try some out and choose the one that fits you the best. HA! Yes, that page has been there for some time now... If you want to create and add a userbox there, have at it! I obviously don't edit the page due to my obligation to remain uninvolved and avoid editing pages that I have a conflicts of interest with (users have a good way of twisting words to point fingers). Greetings - seeking advice.

There is an article on the TROPHY armored vehicle protection system.

It is factually awfully written, I had assumed the author was not a native English speaker. I did review the talk section and despite numerous fairly useful points made - the article remains in very poor shape.

I did change a few headings to see if the 'primary editor' was open to collaboration and the editor immediately reverted to the prior condition. No dialog - no consideration.

The article just does not make sense - again, it reads as though written by an individual who might not be a native English speaker - though the person's profile suggests otherwise.

I'd primarily like to collaborate with the editor - I am sure a lot of work has been done and it needs refining to meet basic English language usage.

I am also happy to completely redo the article - the title should be 'TROPHY Active Armor Defense' - I do not want to get into 'edit wars' and I am sensitive to civility - if you review the editors profile and user page - there is an intensely smug and hostile tone.

Your thinking on the matter?

I totally comprehend this is the nature of WP - and perhaps the aggressive defense of something one has written is not that unusual - if there is a procedure to 'flag' such badly written articles - I would like to trigger this - I know there are templates to achieve this - perhaps the strategy I'd like to take.

You can generally remove such unverifiable information with a short explanation of why in the edit summary (eg, "cited source does not verify the claim, see [[WP:BURDEN]]"). Linking the relevant policy like that (in this case WP:BURDEN) is a good way to keep your explanation short. If you need a longer explanation, you can add it to the talk page and refer people there in your edit, but I don't think that's needed here. —siro χ o 17:20, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

Christopher Columbus

I started an Rfc [[3]] regarding the question of whether Christopher Columbus was an Italian or a Genoese explorer. There is also some Rfc [[4]] from 5 months ago but it is not closed. Would you be able to see what's up with that older Rfc, and given that there is a question in terms of nationality is my new Rfc relevant considering that I am not asking the question in terms of nationality because the sources do not speak in that context. If you are not interested, can you forward this question to a quality admin so that this situation can be clarified. The problem is also in that nationality, because I see that some editors use that argument, but the problem is that sources do not use that argument. This guideline serves to reflect what consensus has already been reached regarding how to use ethnic descriptions on the lead section of an article. Thank you for your reply. My Rfc question was in terms replacement of information 'Italian' for 'Genoese'. So I guess that as far as the quoted rules are concerned, everything fine, considering that information which exists in the introduction 'Italian explorer' has been there for a long time without any major problems. Hi Mikola22! I just looked into both of the terms. I wasn't aware that Genoese and Italian were closely-related. My initial thought without that knowledge was that they were different ethnics from vastly different origins (German vs Japanese or American, for example). That's why I linked you to that manual of style page on the context of ethnic backgrounds. You'd be surprised with how many disputes occur because someone was born in one country, but became well-known or notable in another (think Albert Einstein).

In your case, it might be best to ask some related WikiProject groups - such as WikiProject United States, WikiProject History, or WikiProject Biography. I've done this many times when I had questions about an article I was editing that was closely related to, and the members there were very helpful. I asked this question because I do not edit introductory part of the article in an editorial sense, I only ask editors in Rfc on talk page whether or not similar('Italian-Genoese') information should be replaced. And in that sense, I think everything is fine. But in any case, feel free to guide me or warn me about some things in this case, if you see that it is necessary. I know there are articles with many disputes but the articles of historical figures also have the problem of anachronism. So some information would have to be used in the context of time, and this is my motive in starting this Rfc and not which nationality he is because there is no information about it in the sources. Hi 1939Lady, I’m one of Oshwah’s talk page stalkers. We have this computer program called SuggestBot, which as its name suggests, gives you a list of articles that it thinks you might like to edit. Here’s some information on how to set it up. Thank you Helen -- but I hope it's your screen name, "Degenerate," not your surname! I'd like to try the easiest level of editing, as I've edited things for donkey's years, but not for Wikipedia. And, I don't see yet whether one practices on articles already posted on Wikipedia, or ones you have in the pipeline awaiting editing. While a await a reply, it's fun just to see the screen names! @1939Lady Yes, thankfully ‘Degenerate’ isn’t my surname. This username is based on an inside joke with my friend after I told him that I’m a writer. He said that my pen name should be ‘Helen Degenerate’, so now it is… at least for this site.

As for whether you’re supposed to edit preexisting articles or ones being created, the beautiful thing about Wikipedia is that there isn’t really a set way to go about it. If you see an article needing improvement, regardless of how long it’s been around, be bold and go for it.

The easiest level of editing to get started with would probably be copyediting— fixing typos, correcting grammar, and the like. There’s a whole category of articles that need a bit of maintenance. Since you already have experience editing other things, I think you’ll find it a breeze to pick up. Also, if you want to experiment a little before jumping in, that’s okay too! @ItsMeGabeProductions: I don’t think that’s the list you want to use-- it’s automatically generated (and maintained) by a bot. Here’s the one that gets updated manually. It will jump you to the bottom of the webpage. If you're editing a page's WikiText (where you have a caret cursor in a text editor), just hold down the CONTROL key, then press END to jump to the bottom of the document in the text editor. Instead, add a discussion to the article's talk page and ask for assistance. Other editors who watch or regularly edit the article will usually always be happy to help you. November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello Oshwah:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
