Request

Hi, could you take a look at these filter logs since you blocked the user whose user page is targeted here? I'm guessing the user triggering the filter here is possibly another sock of this LTA (although maybe it's unrelated). Thanks! Uhai (talk) 15:12, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

Uhai - Sorry for the delay getting back to you. It's... wow... been a hell of a few months for me personally. The edit filter I created flagged edits from this user that were all complete justified. If you have any more questions, please let me know. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:54, 25 March 2023 (UTC)

Request NPOV

I received a request from the Minnesota History Project to review the Dakota War article. I did and responded it was in need of a complete rewrite. The existing article has a poor lead for an Encyclopedia article. It fails to introduce a chronology that leads to a summation of the hostilities. The body lacks balance, substance, neutrality, and precision. Presentism is given undue weight that is not properly identified or discussed citing biased sources. I did a rewrite that I posted only to have it reverted immediately. It was not reverted for pov, ci, accuracy, or vandalism. The revert was for "too much at one time". From that I learned the article has two primary editors. Both appear to have NPOV issues and one has taken ownership of the article. The upside to that revert was I continued to work on the balance of the rewrite in my new sandbox.[1] I have reached the point where I would like a outside input. I have reached out to editors in the Minnesota Project and the Military History Project to no avail. I believe it is the toxic subject matter, but that a guess. It is large, however other "war" articles all are way over the Wiki preferred standard. Thank you for your time and thoughts.Mcb133aco (talk) 22:14, 3 February 2023 (UTC)mcb133Mcb133aco (talk) 22:14, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

Mcb133aco - I apologize for the extreme delay with responding to your message here. I've had some... *sigh*... very deep personal matters that I've had to handle. I looked through the Dakota War of 1862 and your contributions, but I couldn't find your edits at all. Can you provide a diff link for me? I'm probably blind as a bat, and I didn't see it. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:01, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
Completely my fault. I did not give you the link [2] Thank you, but no apology or explanation needed. People are lucky that there are editors like you, that donate their time and attention to topics completely foreign to them. I find that rather amazing, so thank you.Mcb133aco (talk) 21:31, 26 March 2023 (UTC)mcb133acoMcb133aco (talk) 21:31, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
Mcb133aco - Nope, I should be sorry, because I am blind as a bat! I totally didn't see that link, and you did provide it in your original message to me! :-) "Too much at one time" is a bad reason to revert another editor's contributions to an article or page. That reads to me as, "I don't want to read and review all of this, so I'm going to revert it". That is not a valid reason to me that reversion is necessary. However, there's a workaround. Fix one issue, then save those changes to the article or page with an appropriate edit summary. Then edit the article again, fix another issue, etc. This way, the edits are spread across multiple diffs, and if someone has a problem with a particular one, they can address that without having to address all of your changes in one diff. Again, the reasoning is bad, but separating your edits into diffs that fix one problem, then the next, etc will hopefully help. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to help! :-) I appreciate the compliments, by the way. They mean a lot! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:58, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you again. Using your suggestion has limitations due to the poor lead the article has to begin with. A rewrite of it makes the rewrite of the article mandatory. It's basic essay writing. Assuming good faith when editors do not know the subject or have an agenda promoting a bias, bestows a creditability that is problematic for other editors. Thank you again.16:51, 31 March 2023 (UTC)mcb133acoMcb133aco (talk) 16:51, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from DEGOR1991 (01:02, 6 February 2023)

Hi, Your name showed as my mentor. I am here to volunteer for translating articles from English into Spanish. Si this through you or do I get access to them directly? Thanks for your guidance. --DEGOR1991 (talk) 01:02, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

DEGOR1991 - I'm so sorry for the delay responding to you. Do you still need help? I don't understand your question... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:02, 25 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from Pranesh Ravikumar (15:51, 7 February 2023)

Hi Oshwah,

We are stuck with the page split here [1] Initially nominated for AFD due to the WP:CONSENSUS decided to merge or delete, but admins closed the page stating Keep and discuss the phase 4 content. Right now while discussing with WP:CONSENSUS on phase 3 split and phase 4 content we are getting again multiple disputes. Could you give us a result

Thanks in advance --Pranesh Ravikumar (talk) 15:51, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

Pranesh Ravikumar - Hi there! According to the information you gave me, this is still in discussion on the article's talk page. I'd continue to contribute there and add relevant important facts and information - just don't become overly-tenacious; don't take over the discussion as a whole by replying to every single comment and feeling like you have to convince everyone to see your viewpoint. In extreme cases, this can be seen as disruptive. Don't worry... we make the best decisions as a collective community vs someone making a decision unilaterally. Whatever happens will be for the best. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:08, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from Aish Aishat on Talk:List of highest-grossing media franchises (08:32, 8 February 2023)

Hello, I am Aish. I want to edit a list which is missing an important franchise, but I have no clue on how to go about it. I'd really appreciate if you can help me. --Aish Aishat (talk) 08:32, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi, maybe i got you wrong, but you just need to click on the "edit source" link or (top of the page), if you want to reply to another user, the "Reply" link. Besides, you also can open a new section by clicking on the relevant link, top of the page.---Wikaviani (talk) (contribs) 08:50, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would like to remind you not to attack yourself, as you did here. How to deal with external, potentially dangerous, links posted at Wikipedia

Hi, Oshwah! :D

Today I come for help with a disturbing observation I do not know how to handle.

A user has posted an URL hidden in square brackets, so that it looked just like an arrow pointing outside, without even [1] indicator, just the   icon. That is a bit tricky, so he's not a beginner at Wikipedia – but the account has just a single edit registered.

My anti-vir software warned me not to following the link, so it may be somewhat dangerous. No idea, how many people succeeded to visit the malicious URL.

The whole picture is even darker: the link was posted at WP Help Desk, in a context suggesting it leads to another user's talk page.

This does not seem an 'incident' clear enough and documented well enough to be reported at WP:ANI. Anyway, it smells... What should I do with it?

I'm ready to send you any details via e-mail or post them here, whichever way you'd prefer.

CiaPan (talk) 11:39, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

P.S. The discussion I refer to above has been moved to archives, so a potential danger got reduced before I noticed it. Anyway I'd like to hear your opinion on it and possibly some advice. :)) CiaPan (talk) 11:42, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Hi CiaPan! Thanks for the message! I'm so sorry! I've been caught into studying for a certification that I need in order to move up in the company that I work at, and a butt-load of other things. :-) If you see a potentially-dangerous external link posted anywhere on Wikipedia, my knee-jerk reaction is to advise you to not proceed to the website - let me know, or let another administrator know. I have sandbox computers in my home that are VPN'd outside my IP address that will be HAPPY to take on the possible danger and do that for you. By the way, do you have the diff to show me what you saw? :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:10, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I can find the place where the link sits, as well as the edit in which it was introduced. I have sent all data to you via e-mail—see the notification template:
Hello. Please check your email; you've got mail! The subject is a suspicious URL lurking in WP:HD.
It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{You've got mail}} or {{ygm}} template.CiaPan (talk) 15:09, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
But I see you're really, really busy in IRL. Good luck with your studies and the final certification! As I said before, my question is not urgent, so take all the time you need.

Timid ping... --CiaPan (talk) 11:55, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
CiaPan - I went through my email a few days ago and responded to everyone. Can you resend your email so I can take a look at it? :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:00, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
@Oshwah: Sure, will do tomorrow. :) THX. --CiaPan (talk) 18:58, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

SPI

If you are not too busy, would you be interested in checking this? --Kansas Bear (talk) 21:33, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

Sorry, Kansas Bear! I'm so sorry! I've been caught into studying for a certification that I need in order to move up in the company that I work at, and a butt-load of other things. :-) Do you still need me to take a look at the SPI report you linked? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:11, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
No. Spicy was convinced by the evidence, but their comment, " I'm not endorsing the CU request as previous accounts are stale and I don't think "to ensure no other socks" is a compelling rationale in this case.", was rather disheartening. Good luck with your certification! --Kansas Bear (talk) 02:23, 15 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from Torukojin89 (08:45, 20 February 2023)

Hello Oshwah,

Nice to meet you! I just created my first draft article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Kemal_(software) on Wikipedia , however I got rejected 2 times.

I put all the references I could find including some from notable resources. Could you please help me? --Torukojin89 (talk) 08:45, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi Torukojin89! I'll be happy to help you! It looks like this draft was deleted for violating Wikipedia's policies on copyright, meaning that it was determined that the content you added was either copied and pasted directly from an external source, or that it was closely paraphrased (copied and pasted, but with some words changed or altered - which is still not allowed). I recommend that you read through these policies and understand them before writing any more content. Failure to comply with these policies will be considered serious violations of Wikipedia policy, especially if repeated. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:15, 15 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from Ak1derwoman (21:04, 20 February 2023)

How can I add information about a celebrity such as adding biological children and and image of the paternity test? --Ak1derwoman (talk) 21:04, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello Ak1derwoman! Sorry for the delay in response— Oshwah seems to be away for a few days. I’m Helen, one of his friendly stalkers. About adding children: extra care needs to be taken when we add (or change) content about living people, so information like that should only be included if it’s covered in a reliable secondary source. Unfortunately a paternity test isn’t secondary (it’s primary, being directly affiliated with the subject) and should not be used in the article to back up claims. You might like to check out this introduction to referencing to guide you in finding— and citing— sources. HelenDegenerate◆ 01:12, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
HelenDegenerate - Thank you for responding on my behalf while I've been... BUSY AS HECK! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:54, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Disruptive IP editor on rail articles (again)

Hi, another rangeblock for User talk:2600:1700:B971:1930:E962:B35F:26B8:D2AB is needed per multiple warnings. Cards84664 05:54, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Cards84664 - Hola! Sorry, I wasn't ignoring you! I've been working overtime, and I've had some... not so great person losses to deal with. I hope that this was taken care of, and (of course) I wish you happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:56, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from Harris Msosa (12:55, 22 February 2023)

Hie Sir. How can l publish my Biography on Wikipedia. I'm a Malawian Musician --Harris Msosa (talk) 12:55, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

@Harris Msosa: Hello Harris and welcome to Wikipedia! Oshwah has been away for a few days. I’m one of his talk page stalkers, which is not nearly as threatening as it sounds.
While there is no set rule against writing autobiographies, it’s strongly discouraged and I recommend against doing so. There are a few reasons for this (outlined in more detail here). To sum it up briefly, though, when writing an autobiography, it’s very difficult to create something that’s both verifiable and neutral, which is what we strive for here. It’s better to avoid topics where you have a conflict of interest.
Are there other areas that you may be interested in writing about? If so I can point you to some useful pages. Just let me know, either in this thread or on my talk page, and I’ll be more than happy to assist. ◇HelenDegenerate◆ 02:35, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
HelenDegenerate - You are a Saint! Thank you! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:56, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from Harris Msosa (05:04, 24 February 2023)

How can l be part of Wikipedia Team of writing Celebrities Biographies and the like? And how can l publish my Biography on wikipedia as a Musician? --Harris Msosa (talk) 05:04, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi Harris Msosa, and welcome to Wikipedia! Per Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, writing an article about yourself is highly discouraged. This is mainly due to the fact that you won't be able to maintain a neutral point of view - since, you know, you're writing about yourself. ;-) Also, Wikipedia's notability guidelines must be met as well. I would instead encourage you to contribute elsewhere and in topic areas that you don't have a personal conflict of interest in. Fear not! If you're notable and worthy of having a Wikipedia article written about you, another editor will certainly do so! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:00, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Mass Message

Hey Oshwah. I have a question, whenever I send a mass message, even when I only send it once, sometimes the system (like today) sends it two times. There is also a delay at times for the message to actually arrive. Any ideas on this? つがる Talk to つがる:) 🍁 01:17, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi つがる! I apologize for the delay with answering your question and helping you. That's interesting... Did you use Special:MassMessage to send this message, or are you using another tool? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:03, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
Hello, No problem! I use the standard MediaWiki Mass Message extension each time to do it. つがる Talk to つがる:) 🍁 19:41, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
つがる - I apologize for the delay responding and following up with you on this. Are you still having issues with this? If so, are you pressing the submit button more than once? Or are you pushing it only once? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:53, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
