RevDel request

Hello, I saw your name at Wikipedia administrators willing to handle RevisionDelete requests, so I thought I would send a request your way. Starting with this edit at Titoo, a redirect, copyrighted material was added from pogo.tv/shows/titoo/about.html. Currently the page is fully protected. I was told that it doesn't really matter since it is just a redirect, but I still thought it would be worth purging. Thanks either way! ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia ^talk 17:56, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

• Oshwah let me explain the sequence of events here, so you can handle this. I obviously didn't, because I guess I didn't understand. I may have dropped the ball in the process. As Titoo, there was a request for page protection. By the time I saw it, it was a redirect, but I protected it. 1 There was a copyvio tag on the redirect, but I removed it. Didn't think it applied to a redirect. Then there was a subsequent RFPP note generated that told me not all pages in the request were protected. 2 I'm not sure if El cid, el campeador is requesting a rev del on the redirect page and its history, or if that history is now at Nipple tattoo. • Oshwah (talk page stalker) Additional information: From the looks of things, someone tried to hijack a redirect (edits from 13:47 and 13:48, 1 December 2020 (UTC)), El cid, el campeador put db-copyvio on it, a bot picked that up and flagged it as seen in the page's log, another established editor reverted el cid's db-copyvio, el cid then flagged it for deletion-revision, then Maile66 reverted that edit and protected the page.[1]

@El cid, el campeador: So, basically just the 3 edits by 2405:... and the edit by you, all within 3 minutes of each other from 13:47-13:50, 1 December 2020 (UTC)? That should be easy enough for Oshwah to find. You can always go back and re-add a filled-out {{copyvio-revdel}} template if it's not fixed in a few days. Just put it below the #redirect line or on the talk page. If you put it on the talk page, use |details= to explain that the revisions are on the non-talk page.

Hi everyone! I managed to locate and revision delete the three revisions that contained the copyrighted content.

El cid, el campeador - Thanks for letting me know about the issue! :-) I guess I wouldn't necessarily count this as a situation (compared to most) where emailing me instead of publicly messaging me rev del requests is absolutely dire, but just note that revision deletion requests should usually be emailed to me instead of publicly messaged to me here. I have about 1000 users who actively watchlist this page, and if you've heard of the Streisand effect, I've seen in page statistics where this absolutely does happen and after users have requested revision deletion on my user talk page. Users will see the message, and then rush over to view the content before they lose the ability to see it. Obviously, this is no bueno and we should avoid it where possible. ;-) No big deal, just figured I'd let you know. :-)

Maile66 - No worries, mistakes and weird things happen. ;-) I run into things like this all the time... You receive a notice, request, or message, the page gets changed to something completely different (like an article gets changed to a redirect), and by the time you look at the page and the request, you're scratching your head asking yourself "what is this person talking about?!!" :-) You didn't drop the ball on anything; this project is not compulsory and you're never required to use your tools. I appreciate you for adding to the initial message and for providing those details. :-D

Davidwr - Thanks for requesting the specific diffs (even though rev del requests should be emailed, but oh well...). That was helpful in assuring that I was able to quickly handle the issue. :-)

According to WP:REVDELREQUEST, WP:RD1 is the one exception to the "should be emailed" rule. There's even a template for it, {{Copyvio-revdel}}, but it is awkward to use on redirect pages. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 02:42, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

I have some questions for you regarding legitimate sources in situations when sources that would be considered legitimate by Wikipedia's policies are few and far between. I realize that this falls under a relevancy issue, but in the case of endangered languages, I would argue that their lack of material is not a reflection of their relevancy.

I agree that there can be "grey areas" at times in regards to the availability of reliable sources, their relevancy or "legitimacy" to the article subject, or whether or not an article subject is considered to have "significant coverage" in regards to Wikipedia's general notability guidelines. What specific questions do you have? Have you reviewed Wikipedia's guidelines on reliable sources? Are you familiar with Wikipedia's notability guidelines? We also have a new user tutorial that will be helpful for you as well. It will provide you with many important walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will familiarize you with our policies and guidelines, how Wikipedia works, how to navigate around the site, and how to find important locations and pages. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. Hey there Oshwah! Thank you so much for your kind reply! I appreciate it! I've been working through the tutorials, and they're wonderful, but I still see some "grey area" that I'd like to clear up. So, in the training, it talks about not using sources from within the community/institution/whatever you're posting about. Thing is, particularly with endangered languages, the best and most reliable sources are the ones that come from within the speech community because they're the ones most likely to really care about accuracy and things like that. Additionally, there's an issue with distrust particularly among Indigenous communities because there have been so many academics marching into our communities, treating us like subjects, and then selling our data and information for their own personal gain. So it ends up being that there isn't a whole lot of research being done by academies because it's just too hard to get enough trust to get the information they're looking for. In any case, I'm just wondering if you would say that, given these circumstances, it's okay to use sources that the community itself has published since they're the most reliable. Hi 4thfile4thrank! I hope you're doing well and that you stay safe this holiday season! Hmm... I mean, there isn't much we can do until the behavior becomes repeated. They definitely created an article that was deleted under G11, but otherwise, they haven't edited much since then. I do note that they made this request on your user talk page asking about conflict of interest, but they haven't done anything I'd consider disruptive enough where administrative action is necessary (at least not yet). Their username doesn't appear to violate Wikipedia's username policy as implying share use or representing an organization or company.

I'd just respond to the message that the user left you, and let them know that a conflict of interest isn't something that just "goes away" or can be "resolved". If they have a personal conflict of interest with the article subject that they're trying to create (which it seems like they acknowledge that they do), that's obviously a problem. They should instead add the article to the list of requested articles and let someone else create it, and they should focus their efforts on improving or expanding the encyclopedia in areas that interest them, but where they don't have a conflict of interest. That's how I'd handle this. Of course, if the user becomes disruptive, let me know and I can handle that. As of right now, they're simply asking a question and there's no harm in that. Let's assume good faith and take this as them trying to reach out for help and understand how Wikipedia works. :-) ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 02:17, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

4thfile4thrank - If it's blatant spam and if they've been warned and continue to do it, report them to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Looking for your opinion on an editor

Oshwah, you're an Admin I trust. I would appreciate it if you would take a look at this editor – User talk:Lonniemitchell22 – and determine if you think it's time for some kind of block (or some other action). This user has gotten a plethora of Level 4 warnings, and it doesn't seem to be changing or improving their behavior one iota... Thanks. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 21:36, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi IJBall! Thanks for the message! How've you been? It's been quite some time since we've said hello to one another! I hope you're doing well and that you're staying safe this holiday season. :-)

I think you did the right thing by noting to this user in your warning that this is the last one that they'll receive, and that any more issues will result in a report being filed at ANI. A discussion at ANI would be the logical next step in resolving any further disruption by this user should it be necessary, and it will also allow the community to weigh in.

With the exception of blatant vandals, LTA users, etc that need to be blocked right away - I try not to block users after they've been given a final warning and if they haven't done anything (yet) afterwards to warrant further action - especially if the warning was actually written to them with a custom message and if the user has been here for some time. I see it as a bit unfair; we just warned them and told them that they have one more chance to turn things around and improve their behavior, and then for me to just go and block them... It wouldn't give the user (or any user) a good impression on how administrators behave on Wikipedia if we did that. ;-)

This user has a long history of warnings for disruption, and I'm surprised that this user has a clean block record. It's doubtful that the user will turn things around, but we've already set expectations with them and outlined the consequences should things continue. Keep an eye on the user if you believe it necessary to do so, and stick to your bottom line. The next time that this user causes an issue or any kind of disruption, you should absolutely file a report at ANI. Sometimes, a more powerful message than a block that you can give to a user is the act of taking the exact action that you clearly communicated would happen in a final warning. ;-)

Hello, Oshwah. Just wanting to preface that I've come here from IJBall. I too have experienced issues with this user, especially seeing how several of the warnings on their talk page come from myself.

Most of my issues with them have been in regards to references, such as all the reorderings of parameters done here. That isn't much of a deal compared to some other stuff. Countless times, I've told them to be using the correct citation method, such as cite press release instead of cite web for press releases, yet continue to do just the opposite (The site in question, The Futon Critic, provides press releases, the citation in that edit being an example of one).

The user has also been warned multiple times about removing sources/sourced content from articles, most recently by IJBall here for their edit on The Outpost. Despite that warning, it seems they either haven't seen it or don't care enough to heed the warning, removing sources from List of Nick Jr. original programming just today.

I'm really not sure what should be done at this point, but it seems like any amount of warnings will not be changing their editing behavior anytime soon. Seems like now would be the time for something to be done.

Having 1000 watchlisters

A few days ago up above you said "I have about 1000 users who actively watchlist this page". The discussion was about how revdel should be emailed to avoid the Streisand effect.

I just saw where you redacted some guy's email address. I confess I took a peek. Why? I need to make sure it's on my email's blacklist. (ok seriously no, I won't put it on my blacklist, my email provider has very good anti-spam heuristics so it's not necessary. However the domain-name, which you did not redact, is in my "mental list of likely spammers." Hi Davidwr! I hid that email address to avoid any potential abuse of it by other users, but it looked like a business email so I didn't think it was necessary to rev del it. ;-) And see?!! I didn't expect a revdel, and hiding it was common courtesy - not just for the reasons you stated but I'm sure some email-address-harvesting bots used by spammers ignore the "noindex" protocols and get email example@127.0.0.1 addresses any way they can. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:05, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

How to edit protected pages ?

I have many times seen false information on some Wikipedia pages. Then I came to know that i can edit them, but I can't edit them. Maybe because I don't have verified account. (talk page watcher) Hi Pruthviraj Dodiya, some articles are protected against vandalism, requiring certain user rights to edit them. The most common of these are for autoconfirmed and extended confirmed, which requires a certain number of days and edits to attain. Autoconfirmed is 10 edits and 4 days, whilst Extended confirmed is 30 days and 500 edits. Generally these articles have a history of abuse, or are rife for editors to "fix" them against wikipedia's policies and standards. Just keep in mind that even when you meet these requirements, you should still edit within the standards for that particular article. If there is innacuracies, you can post an {{edit request}} on the talk page of the article in question for an experienced editor to implement. (edit conflict) Hi Pruthviraj Dodiya! Welcome to Wikipedia. Whether or not you can edit a protected page depends on the level of protection that is currently set on it. For example, in order for you to edit semi-protected pages, your account must be at least 4 days old and have made a total of 10 edits. Right now, your account is 5 hours old and you have made 9 total edits with it - so you just need to wait a few days and you'll be able to edit those protected pages without any problems. You'll notice that the majority of articles that are protected are going to be semi-protected, so once your account is a few days old, you likely won't run into any restrictions. There are other protection levels that restrict editing to accounts with higher levels of edits or user rights, but you'll find that those aren't that common, and in time, your account will get there. You can read through the different protection levels used and their requirements in order to edit those pages by reviewing Wikipedia's protection policy. Sorry for the late reply, could you review the edit on Glory? A user Livelikemusic gave me a “disruptive editing” message on my talk page after I had corrected the single with being released under the reissue. There explanation of the removal was very vague. I reached out to them via their talk page and questioned it and they were once again— very vague. They told me I wasn’t following the template correctly and that I’m trying to move around it. They also need to give a more in depth explanation of why it isn’t appropriate to have in the box. Yet many users have already discussed whether the song is a single— which was confirmed to be. But this user all of a sudden isn’t allowing it to be included in the box on the album page. Which to me is odd. They had also told me I wasn’t following their “talk page rules” after I had sent them a message. Didn’t know that was a thing but okay... Please review the messages on both mine and this users talk page. For some odd reason it wouldn’t allow me to respond back to our previous conversation. @Oshwah: If you don’t mind me asking is it just me or is this user (Livelikemusic) clearly showing signs of lacking Wikipedia:Consensus? I also don’t feel appreciated how they immediately gave me a level 3 warning without prior reaching out to me to explain what is wrong and what is right. To me this fits me perfectly Misinformation, accidental— I’m still new and learning I’ve only been editing for 8 months and this user is treating me as if I’m a vandal. They are lacking Policy and guideline pages, good-faith changes to— they need to actually discuss this with me; telling me I’m wrong and they are right really isn’t helpful. Hi Pillowdelight! Sorry for the delay responding to your message here. Again, I'm not an expert with articles in this nature, nor am I an expert regarding those specific templates and when they should or shouldn't be used. If you haven't already, you should kindly explain to Livelikemusic that you feel that their responses to your input and questions are vague, and follow that statement with exact questions to the user that would help you to completely understand their position. I don't understand why they left you a level 3 warning - perhaps they can explain this? Good faith should always be assumed; you weren't purposefully disrupting the article, and there's obviously a disagreement with certain things. Just remember to remain civil and (most importantly) don't edit war. ;-) If there's previous consensus regarding your argument, make sure that you point it out to them. Remember that the dispute resolution protocol is here to help in disputes; if you two can't come to an agreement, look to that guide for what to do next. Get outside input from people who edit these kinds of articles often, ask for community input... There's plenty of helpful steps and guides in that protocol. Give it a read-through and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions or are confused about anything. Revision deletion

Hello Oshwah, sorry to bother you again but would it be possible to revision delete some vandal edits on Jimmy Rave? A question

Maybe this should go to a higher authority, but someone high up on the food chain ranks of respected highly trusted veteran editors might want to register this username globally, set up a "meta" page, then lock it, just as a placeholder for when that "username" shows up - albeit without a link - in logs.

Yeah, I'm being pendantic here and considered not even mentioning it, but it has just enough humor value to make it worth mentioning and, I think, worth doing. In order for your account to become "confirmed", it must both be more than four days old and have made at least 10 total edits. Little Problem

Following this what do you think is the best course of action pertaining the Kaptain Kush article itself? I was thinking of using a G5 but wasn’t sure how that was gonna play out then i thought of unilaterally moving it to draftspace but figured to first ask you before proceeding. Hi Celestina007! Good question. If an article is created by someone who is actively evading their block or ban, a G5 is the usual way to go. However, there are instances where I haven't done this, simply because the article had high value. If it's an article where the subject is notable and would be kept otherwise, and if it's well written, I haven't been opposed to the idea of deleting it under G5 and then having someone re-create it so that the sock doesn't receive credit, but it still defeats the purpose nonetheless. We're still rewarding their efforts by keeping the article. I guess the question is this: is there a reason not to G5 the article? It's been tagged as possibly having been contributed to using non-disclosed paid accounts. This is against policy, and, like I said: Keeping it would reward their efforts. It would inadvertently teach them that the article they want to create will be kept if they put enough effort into their intentions. :-) ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 21:46, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

Unjust move of my article to Draft

Hello Oshwah, I strongly believe I will get justice from you so I am hopeful that you will attend to this issue very well. I have been an editor since 2015, but I get a lot of attacks and disapproval which has continued to discourage me from doing anything further.

I created an article that is clearly correct with every credible reference from very popular platforms in Nigeria. But my article was unjustly moved to draft for allegedly not having a credible source. Oshwah, I am here to let you know that 3 sources I quoted are have been in existence since 2007 and have an international reputation with over millions of followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. they include but not limited to Vanguard, Genuis, and Bella Naija.

I see that you've added references since the move, which is a good thing to do. And don't worry! Because an article is moved to the draft space doesn't make it a bad thing. Having it in the draft space gives you the ability to spend all the time you need to expand and improve the article before it is accepted and moved into the mainspace. It also allows you to seek help from volunteers if you get stuck or have questions. Once the article is ready, it'll be moved back. It's already been submitted for review; just make improvements to the article and expand it while you wait for someone to approve it. I work directly for Dexter Fletcher (the person who's page I am trying to change). He has asked me to make the edits I have done previously, and more. Mainly to take away a lot of irrelevant information he does not want on his page. This is the third time I have attempted but a 'bot' keeps reverting my changes. Can you help please?

Dr.Swag Lord, Ph.d - Sure, that many reverts in a short amount of time is cause for concern. However, there's nothing I can do about it now. The edits have stopped (since the article is now fully protected). It wasn't just this user that made me decide to fully protect the article. There were reverts and issues that involved a number of other users as well, and it looked to me as if there were content-related issues as well. This is why I decided to fully protect the article. @Oshwah: There's nothing you can do about it now? I may be out of line here, but why didn't you do something when the user broke 3RR (or when they broke 10RR)? You didn't even give the editor a warning. I noticed you were more than capable of leaving a warning template when two users didn't leave edit summaries: [7], [8]. Not leaving edit summaries is problematic, and you were correct for warning those users, but did you look at the content they removed? For instance, you reverted this removal: [9]. Even a cursory glance at the content, and one should be able to determine that "www.slowlyboiledfrog.com" is the furthest thing away from a RS, and has no business in a BLP. The other citation in that edit cited the book itself--which doesn't make sense. This is just a little confusing to me...Dr.Swag Lord, Ph.d (talk) 20:10, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Dr.Swag Lord, Ph.d - I warned those users because they removed content without an explanation. I didn't notice that the content probably should've been removed. At the time I became aware of what was going on with this article, I had only reverted the unexplained removal of content. I then looked at the article's history, and determined that applying full protection was necessary. It would stop the disruption, and it would encourage all participants to properly discuss the issues and disputes that were going on. I can't be there, catch, and warn every single user out there that causes disruption. I would if I could, but I unfortunately can't. ;-) I do my best given the situation and what information I have in front of me.

Wikipedia's blocking policy states that blocks are supposed to be preventative, in that they are implemented in order to prevent further disruption to the project. If I've fully protected the article from editing, blocking users involved in the disruption or dispute would be inappropriate. I'm not preventing anything; it would be seen as being applied punatively, which is not the manner in which we're supposed to apply blocks. Being an administrator comes with a few extra buttons, and that's about it. Moreso, it comes with the responsibility of using the tools in the manner that they're supposed to be used, and in a neutral and level-headed fashion and as an uninvolved editor. This is why I won't be blocking the users at this time. Another administrator is more than welcome to do so, but I don't think that it's necessary at this time. If the edit warring and issues continue after the full protection expires, then a block can definitely be considered.

Hi 4thfile4thrank! Happy Friday! I did some spot-checking on some of the diffs you reverted, and they all were unreferenced changes to data and content within articles. From my first glance, I don't see an issue with what you did. If someone discovers an issue, I'm sure they'll let you know. I've used that tool many times to revert mass changes by a user or IP that were disruptive, vandalism, or were made without consensus - and I always feel a bit nervous using the tool. It's a lot of changes that get reverted in a matter of seconds! Fear not, though; if you "measure twice" before you "cut", you won't run into any trouble. Worst case scenario, you did it in good faith, and you can easily restore any changes back by going to your contributions and rolling back your edits. ;-) Please don't hesitate to let me know if you need my input or assistance, and I'll be happy to lend a hand. Hi BilCat! Nah, it's fine... The "bot" part has to be at the very end of the username in order for it to violate policy. Because I think the evidences are still not enough for submitting a SPI report but they guarantee a checkuer. I provide some evidences here: Take a look at User1, User2, and EIA results. Isn't odd that both users opened very similar sections[11][12] on the talk page of an article in less than 3 days? The other similarity is their comments. Review the history of that talk page. And they tag most of their edits as minor. I don't think such amount of similar activity is just a coincidence; especially on a specific talk page. It seems like abusing and violating talk page rules to win a debate/discussion/move request. So checkuser would be helpful. --Wario-Man (talk) 06:34, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

David Gilbert

I noticed that you rolled back the change from "activist" to "convicted murderer" on David Gilbert's page. I disagree with "activist" being more neutral. The murder conviction is factual, whereas activist is a loosely defined term and not quite fitting of a person who murdered three individuals. Hi there! Please see Wikipedia's policy on due and undue weight. Why is changing a lose term such as "activist" less neutral than the very-specific term "convicted murderer"? Sockpuppet - Iconian42 issue

Hi Oshwah,

sorry to disturb, you but the sock is continusly pinging me (but of course, I won't take the decoy, as his socks as well did this never ending discussions, pretending non-understanding, falsifying or bludgeoning, as well on noticeboards, with other editors, etc.), and at this point it became abusive.

The investigation you did with the fellow admin was correct, without knowing about it I recognized the phenomenon earlier ([18]]), and already reported to the previously acting admin, but before answering the parallel sockpuppet investigation already was complete (all in all, 2 different admins and 2 different users recognized him, without notifiyng each other)

I could easily refute the socks deceptive allegations about me (btw. very amateur manipulations, despite the talk pages prove everything), but I won't spend more precious editing time to someone who tired for almost two months the community on the other hand the other users he is listing are topic banned, or indefinetly banned editors, except Ikastul which is a sleeping account with 85 mainspace edits, while Scheianu could have been blocked for serious personal attacks if I am not so much elegant, but finally draw back his tone, etc.

I think, it is the time to revoke talk page access, as the sock again started to mock me, and he will never stop and 'till infinite time will continue until the last ditch, as his socks did. Regards.(KIENGIR (talk) 13:03, 19 December 2020 (UTC))

This isn't gonna stop - as I prolonged - ([19]), the funny thing is again the very cheap way of manipulation of the facts, just one example, the sock states in fact he did not violate the RFC, but followed it "just quote the census figures directly", and then he presents his edit where he removes the census figures and replaced them with estimations and adding texts and quotes although the RFC result was clear (funnily is his recent rant he even contradicting himself by describing what I removed fairly as per the earlier mentioned). The same way the other coin attempts may be easily demonstrated.

The user continuing the scheme I described above, he is never guilty, always innocent, despite on noticeboards, talk page discussion more users explained him everything, but in the end never accepted really his faults, but rallied even very experienced editors and fighting the evidence, even continuing when his argumentation already became logically untenable, but in a never ending way an alternate reality is pursued by the editor where black will became white, yellow will became green - even the stars do not shine in the sky, it is just an illusion -, and anyone who oppose is accused with various epithets, like a conspiracy would be made against the "poor" editor. The most amusing part is the last remark, "did not break any rules.". This has to end, my bearance of the user's insults are limited (and as I see the insultation of another user just restarted).(KIENGIR (talk) 13:43, 21 December 2020 (UTC))

Hi KIENGIR! Thanks for leaving me a message regarding this user. I re-checked all of the technical evidence and stood by my original findings after SQL pinged me about this. If they claim that they have not broken any rules and have not created any sock puppet accounts, they should appeal their block. Both this page and this page detail how the user can do so, and the Arbitration Committee will review it. Other than that, I have no other information I can give. People will swear up-and-down that they're innocent; they may or may not be. All I can tell you is that the block is based off of technical evidence that I found. Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to help you further. If the user doesn't stop their erratic behavior, let me know and I will have another admin revoke their talk page access (I probably shouldn't do it since I'm the blocking admin, and that might be received... poorly... if you know what I mean). Don't worry there is no doubt the sock investigation was correct, it is just being reinforced every further talk page comment of the subject, since he continuing still those pretensions I detailed above, just around 2 days ago ([20]), although by a few point&click the invalidiy of the argumentation could be demonstrated, but this user will never stop or accept anything, in his last rant on the bottom of the page he again repeats an akin argumentation that again one of his previous infamous socks did, so lame....but a meanwhile answering you I just noticed this ([21]), where again I am mentioned around 20 times (+15,073 (!!), and as well attacking a fellow editor the same way incorrectly), so I this is the point when I say enough, so please do contact that another admin :/. KIENGIR - You did the best you could to try and help this user, and I commend you greatly for that. If anything, you gained experience with keeping patient and civil, and increased your skill with dedication and with helping others by trying - all of which are assets when it comes to becoming a wise and experienced editor on Wikipedia, so don't take it as a failure on your part. Take it as a success. Some people just don't want to be helped or try and understand where they went wrong. I see that a lot on this project; there are just times where you have to acknowledge that the user isn't going to take the help you hand-deliver to them and with everything they need included, no matter how many times you try. Just take the positive things you got out of trying to help the user, and move on. Thanks again for the message. I'll continue to keep eyes on the user's talk page and I'll offer them the information I provided you above regarding how to properly appeal their block. KIENGIR - No problem! I was told this saying long ago, and I try and stick to it as often as I can: "Take the meat and leave the bones". In unfavorable or even ridiculous situations that you find yourself part of, the best thing you can do is take what's positive out of it, and leave the rest behind. Don't let the negative parts of it come with you or affect you at all. Even if you have to think hard to come up with just a few positive things that you personally got out of something unfavorable or that went sour, take those with you. Don't leave meat behind, and don't take bones with you. They only weigh you down. ;-) I went ahead and let the user know how to properly appeal their block. Even if they take it negatively or as a reason to point fingers, I gave them the information they needed. It's up to them if they go through with it or not. Trouble at Checkpoint Charlie

Hi Oshwah, hope you're well... If you have a minute, could you take a look at Checkpoint Charlie Museum? A user is repeatedly making the same edit, adding content that doesn't seem to be encyclopedic. I've notified them about the content policies and WP:BRD and so on, and I don't want to edit-war with them, but I think the material really doesn't belong.

I also suspect they're the same person as blocked Nillsson and their sock Eintracht123. Partly based on the same interest in promoting the Museum and its directors the Hildebrandts, as well as their edit-warring behavior. But also because they're doing the same thing on German Wikipedia too, like the others did, where they are presently edit-warring with other users over an edit that's nearly the same as Nillsson's last one for example: [23], [24] (in German). I can file an SPI report, and I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that evidence from other Wikipedias can be used in SPI cases, but I can't seem to find it now. Without that, the evidence here is maybe not strong enough. What do you think? --IamNotU (talk) 02:18, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

It got a bit more serious - they've ignored my request for discussion at Checkpoint Charlie Museum, and have been adding copyrighted content and edit-warring over that at Rainer Hildebrandt, as Nillsson/Eintracht123 also did. I went ahead and filed a report at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Nillsson‎. IamNotU - No worries, and sure - I understand. :-) While adding details regarding cross-wiki abuse is certainly something that should be done, it just needs to be supplemented with abuse occurring on this project. Otherwise, yeah, there's nothing we can do if it doesn't involve en-wiki. My "checkuser eyes" only go so far; I can only see technical data that's logged on the English Wikipedia's servers (or any other project that I'm also a checkuser on), and all technical data that I can see is only stored onto Wikimedia's servers for three months since the time it was initially logged. So, if someone requests a checkuser on SPI and if all of the accused accounts haven't edited or logged any actions on Wikipedia for over three months, there's nothing I can do... lol. Ok, thanks, good to know that cross-wiki details are useful. Regarding that previous report though, it was actually all about socking on English Wikipedia by Garagarage1979 (talk · contribs). A fair amount of the evidence I found linking them to the master was on others, but a good amount here too. I guess I can understand the admin not wanting to wade through edit histories in non-Roman alphabets... There was socking on other Wikipedias too, but I also don't really have the resources to police those, I was just concerned about here. The master hasn't edited here for years, so it would have had to be behavioral. They're both still editing on different Wikipedias though, the master where they aren't blocked, and the sock where they are. I guess a global CU could put those together? The sock didn't come back here after that, so I didn't pursue it further. Do you think it's worthwhile to report it at m:SRCU as suggested? IamNotU - I don't think it would hurt to report the user as suggested. I have suspicions about Sandy Anugrah and they aren't good. Brand new editor seems to know a lot about formatting. Refuses to use edit summaries; I've warned about that. Also refuses to use any talk page at all, possibly unable to write or understand English. WP:CIR applies here. Five warnings on her page by this time, and no sign of reforming. Possible socking in recent MFD

For your perusal, Oshwah, there seems to be some possible socking going on in this MFD where multiple of the IP voters are mimicking the same voting style and mannerisms of the nominator. Editing of Lee Rowley page

Hi again Oshwah,

Hope you are well. You helped a while back with the 'Lee Rowley' page after what appeared to be the same person repeatedly deleting anything that was not entirely positive about the subject matter. Same person appears to be back. First it was an unregistered user and then it was a user who only edits that page. As before, they are making exactly the same edits as last year (word for word), which suggests it is the same person again. After the last round of issues a couple of experienced Wiki editors stepped in and tidied things up and rejected the vandalism that was going on. They also critiqued some of the detail in my edits, which I accepted as they were sensible points. The user who keeps deleting material appears to be the subject of the page and they refuse to discuss matters on the talk page. As again, suspect the page needs a extra control to stop their vandalism, as they keep just re-doing the edits.

conspiracy theorists

You could say the same about Facebook. However, you don’t see any potentially damaging remarks on Facebook’s Wikipedia. The above remark is an opinion at best. That said, I could understand if this statement was in a separate section or category. For example, how some Wikipedia pages have a death category, lawsuits, legal problems, etc...

I don’t have a Mewe account, so I decided to research mewe, and the first thing I read about mewe is the statement above. It is almost slander, it saddens me I can’t even look up anything these days with out some sort of bias. With this in mind, if Facebook and Instagram had all their shady business out front and was the first thing I read in their Wikipedia page, I would not be writing this at all. In fact, There is nothin negative on the Facebook Wikipedia page. Isn’t Facebook being sued right now by like 48 states for breach of privacy laws?

All things considered, I feel like the mewe Wikipedia page can be churched up a bit. I doubt you will actually care but I do hope you take what I said into consideration.

I added what, in retrospect, was a wall of text to this. I did it because the editor who opened it said "There are probably some other ways to connect the accounts that don't involve deleted contribs on other wiki" and I took that as a request for assistance.

Hi Davidwr! It's always helpful to add information and create SPI reports in good faith where necessary. The first SPI report that was created by the other user would've been declined a CU check since they only listed an IP address in the list as a sock. I was able to run a checkuser with your report since it included relevant details and diffs, and included a list of accounts that were suspected socks. Don't be afraid to add more socks to a list and add more details, diffs, and information to an SPI report in the "comments by other users" section if you also suspect sock puppetry but have additional relevant information to share. We have to have a clear and reasonable amount of evidence to suspect sock puppetry before any check can be run. We also cannot use the checkuser tool to confirm if an IP address is a sock puppet of an account - only accounts to accounts. Thanks for the message with your questions! I was using GIMP off and on 1-2 decades ago, but it's been ages. I'm sure it's much easier to use now - "hard to use compared to expensive alternatives" was one of its drawbacks back then. I'm not sure if I first used it before or after Wikipedia went live. Of course "back in my day" computer graphics meant using the university mainframe to print ASCII art on green-bar paper, or if you had the budget - think Hollywood and high-end scientific/engineering applications - a Unix workstation that costs more than a low-end new car. Oh and I almost forgot, there was "continuous sideways printing on fan-fold white paper" that 8- and 16-bit home computers could do for things like "Happy Birthday" banners and the like. You printed it in black-and-white using an "outline font" and colored it in with a pen or crayon. Prof. Eric A. Youngstrom - It was an article-like biography about the user himself, which isn't allowed on user pages. I would not encourage this user to create an autobiography; these are high discouraged here. Instead, I'd have the user create an article about something else that interests them, or expand an article that exists. This would be a great way to help the user gain experience in article creation or expansion. I see; that makes sense. What happened here is that I suggested that he copy and paste an existing bio as a quick way of populating the page. That is the same way I bet the other Board Members would approach it -- they already have bios elsewhere, and that would be a quick way to start to describe themselves to the community. Please undelete User:RobertFindling page

Dear Oshwah, I am writing to ask that you please undelete the User:RobertFindling page. He is the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University, and a very accomplished researcher. He also is on the Board of Directors for Helping Give Away Psychological Science, which is both a nonprofit organization (501c3) and has an affiliated Wikimedia User Group (H-GAPS). The full list of HGAPS Board members is here.

What we are trying to do is start to connect more people with the editing community, and do it respectfully and collaboratively. We would like to get all of the Board members to make accounts if they do not already have them, and add brief biographies and some links to help the Wiki community understand them (their areas of expertise, and their potential conflicts of interest). My hunch is that most of the board members are too busy in their regular lives to be likely to do much editing, but it seems worthwhile to have them have some exposure to the mechanics. They also are content experts who are consulting with the younger editors in the HGAPS user group, so them having a footprint on Wiki is helpful in terms of transparency. Dr. Findling is notable enough to have an actual Wikipedia article about him, but that is not our goal -- we want to create accounts and descriptive user pages to accomplish the goals of education and transparency. If it would be helpful to contact Dr. Findling directly, he has given me permission to include his email (robert.findling@vcuhealth.org).

If there was particular content that seemed inappropriate, please advise, and we will work to revise accordingly. The template that I am thinking for the userpages for the Board members would be along the lines of mine, with links to my university page, as well as to PubMed and GoogleScholar searches to make it convenient for editors to find my areas of expertise/potential COI. SandyGeorgia has been over my page several times, and we have had very helpful discussion about how to achieve transparency and not go rogue making edits in mainspace. :-)

Again, the goal is to create accounts and descriptive user pages, NOT pages for these people in mainspace (although many would be well past the notability threshold). These are not likely to be active editors (though it would be excellent if over time, we could engage some of them to make constructive edits).

Based on my quick read of your UserPage, it looks like you are busy patrolling new accounts. It would be great to get any suggestions about how best to "on board" the Board members. Our next Board meeting is in mid-January, and we can certainly pause adding new account userpages until we have guidance from you. Like Dr. Findling, I check email (eay@unc.edu) more frequently than my talk pages, though I check the Wikipedia one several times a week. (My account is old enough that I don't have a single one for all the projects, which is a hassle since I spend more time on Wikiversity).

Thanks, Oshwah. Now that I can see User:RobertFindling, yes, Eyoungstrom, I think you'll want them to get that cleaned up quickly. As a couple of samples of appropriate userpages of practicing physician/experts, see Graham Beards TimVickers and Jfdwolff (I have gleaned from others that Jacob might meet notability and could have his own Wikipedia article, but you'll see no such indication of that on his user page, which focuses exclusively on his Wikipedia work). I think it wise to list your Wikipedia work, link to your real life credentials, but take care that user pages are not CVs trying to look like articles. One distinction where you all need to be very careful (compared to Tim or Graham or Jacob) is that your userpages and work are not promoting your own work in the area of assessment.

SandyGeorgia - Be careful about encouraging or telling people about posting their real life credentials, website, contact information, etc on their user pages or on Wikipedia. I never encourage this practice for anyone due to the risk of harassment and other serious problems I've seen happen. Once someone puts their information like that on Wikipedia, even with revision deletion and even suppression available, the information is still hard to completely remove and is never really gone. I would encourage the user to make a user page that's primarily Wikipedia-focused and with content allowed per Wikipedia's user page policy; don't have him put personal identifiable or other information about himself on here. Thank you both! Interesting about the choice of username being a concern. I actually had coached him to make a username like that, again with the goal of achieving maximum transparency and avoiding concerns about sockpuppetry. If there is a better approach, please coach us. We want to do this the right way, and getting the kinks worked out now will save work later as other Board members add accounts. HUGELY appreciated!

Also helpful about the bio. It's another great example of cultural differences between his world and Wiki. His CV is more than 200 single spaced pages; so he and I thought that would be unhelpful (as well as unacceptable!) and picked the blurb as a reasonable length thumbnail (similar to what he would have on a Department page). I am sure that most board members won't have something like what you suggested "off the shelf." We can certainly work to shape them. One solution might be to have younger editors help edit their userpages. My sense, though, is that such editing is against a convention (not editing someone else's userpage). Another option would be to draft things off-wiki and then paste in.

Hi Pahunkat! Nope, I'm certainly not Thegooduser. The user has been renamed to つがる. What he did was copy my pagenotice template from my user space, but he forgot to edit it and change the template so that the link to leave him a message pointed to his user talk page instead of mine. Thanks for the wishes. :) I actually started using Red warn the day you granted me rollback, so I think I'm going to stick around with it for a while before switching over to to Huggle. I presume Huggle is the quickest way to revert vandalism, so if I start using it immediately, I might not return to Red warn again. Regarding pending changes, its very rare to come across pages which the PC protection, but when I do its generally pretty easy to review the edit. Also, why is it that some reports made at the AIV go "stale" and get removed automatically after a few hours when they remain unanswered? Ashleyyoursmile! 06:34, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi Ashleyyoursmile! That's awesome! I heard that RedWarn is a good tool to use. Remember that it's not about which tool you should use that's the "fastest" when it comes to reverting vandalism. The tool that you should use is the one that you feel the most comfortable with using. I think that many of the tools (including RedWarn) are pretty darn close in regards to "speed" in reverting vandalism. I've used Huggle for many years, and I'm completely comfortable with how it works and how to use it. If I run into another tool that lets me do the same thing as Huggle, and if I were to grow more comfortable with it than Huggle, I'd be using that tool instead. ;-) I don't find myself reviewing edits that are under pending changes often, but it's a good tool to have nonetheless. :-) To answer your question about AIV: I haven't heard of reports getting removed automatically if they sit unanswered for a period of time. There's certainly no bots that do this. Oshwah, if you take a look at this diff [26], you'll find that my report of the IP got removed automatically by a bot, along with another report filed by another user. The edit summary mentions a "stale" time of 4 hours, this is what I was asking. Ashleyyoursmile! 07:08, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Ashleyyoursmile - Oh wow... I wasn't aware that this was going on... Thanks for letting me know - today I learned! I'm not sure why bots are doing this, but there must've been a discussion somewhere that ruled by consensus that this was necessary. I'm sorry to see that your report was removed. If it's urgent enough, I'd re-add the report and indicate the urgency with it. It looks like the bot removes stale reports if they sit there for a number of hours depending on how many administrators are currently active, as pointed out here. Oshwah, from their contribution log, it looks like the IP has stopped from the mass blanking (which is why I'd reported them yesterday) but have continued making subtle changes to articles related to Blinky Bill; I'm unsure whether to re-report at the moment unless they resort to drastically blanking articles again. Also since their edits do not revolve around BLPs, so I think the report can wait, I'll keep an eye on them though.
