The embattled U.S.S Lawrence is adrift with bullet-riddled sails. Perry's relief flagship, the U.S.S. Niagara, appears with its three large sails in the distant center. This painting is widely regarded as the most monumental canvas Birch created.

1819	Sedgeley Park, Philadelphia, oil on canvas		Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.	Sedgeley was the country home of James Cowles Fisher, Esq., on the east bank of the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia. It was designed by the architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe and built 1799-1802.
