The College of Business is one of four colleges at the University of Northern Iowa, located in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The College of Business, often stylized as UNI Business, was officially established in 1981 and was born out of the School of Business.[1] UNI has long been recognized for its strong business program, which is accredited by the highly esteemed Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Fewer than five percent of business schools worldwide have earned the distinction, making it the gold standard of business school accreditation.[2] The College of Business consists of five academic departments, including Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management, and Marketing and Entrepreneurship[3].

History[edit]

The history of business-related courses at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) dates back to 1906, when the school first established a Commercial Department.[4] In 1946, the Business Education Department was formed, further expanding the school's offerings in the field of business.[4] The College of Business administration was officially established in 1981.[4] Over the years, the school has evolved and grown, adding new programs and departments to meet the changing needs of its students and the community.

Robert Waller was the first dean of the College. He taught at UNI for twenty years, starting in 1968, and he served as the dean from 1980 to 1986. After his retirement, he became a famous author and artist, writing the runaway best-seller "Bridges of Madison County." [5]

Today, the University of Northern Iowa's College of Business is home to various programs, including accounting, economics, finance, management and marketing. It is known for its rigorous academic programs, hands-on learning opportunities, and strong connections to the business community.[3] The College has a long history of preparing students for success in the business world, and it continues to be a leader as a top-ranked business college today.[1]

Curris Business Building[edit]

The Curris Business Building, located on the University of Northern Iowa campus, is the home of the College of Business. Opened in 1990, the building was constructed to keep up with growing enrollment during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1986 the state approve bonding for a new 57,784 square feet business building.The four-story building was designed by architectural firm Hansen-Lind-Meyer and was created to transition from old to new. The building features red brick walls and limestone trim that consistent with old and new buildings on campus. In 1998 the building was named after Constantine "Deno" Curris, president of UNI from 1983 through 1995. Today the Curris Business Building houses many iconic spaces on campus, including the International Hall of Flags, John Deere Auditorium, and Transamerica Business Analytics Lab.[15]

Business and Community Services[edit]

The Business and Community Services building is where many of the College's consulting, training, and outreach services are located. For many years, UNI Business has been interested in economic development and supporting Iowa businesses. Before the construction of the Business and Community Services building, most of those services were located in the College of Business and in the Curris Business Building. But the Curris Business Building needed more space to house all of those services efficiently. In January 2004, university staff selected InVision Architecture of Waterloo to design a new building to house those services. The new building opened in May 2007.[16]
