Location and measurements of the sequoia[edit]

The Great Secuoya picture taken from downwards.

In Vitoria-Gasteiz we find the only tree catalogued like singularly for the Basque government: A great sequoia. It measures 40 meters of height, 8 meters of perimeter of trunk and 16 meters of crown catches our attention, in particular tourist´s attention. It is in the back court of a particular house but of public use at Magdalena street Nº12, close to Ursulinas's college and to 200 meters of the Florida, which it turns into one of the most ancient living being of Vitoria-Gasteiz. It was planted in 1860 by D. Juan Ibarrondo who bought the graft in the Universal Exhibition of Brussels in 1858, and it is one of the "Colossuses of Vitoria". [1]

The sequoia was endanger of being felled[edit]

The monumental secuoya of Vitoria-Gasteiz is surrounded by walls and buildings, bordering the court of the college. The Building work of the nearby block of housings damaged a few years ago its roots and stole light and food from it. Even it was about to be felled because his dimensions were annoying the neighborhood thanks to the Town Hall the large secuoya was not cut down. Some children's games contributed to the children to trample the soil. As consequence, the leaves started yellowing and secuoya's condition started to worry us because some of the secuoyas located on the Campillohave been disappearing during the last years. Therefore, there started to be actions tending to protect the tree and to create a suitable environment for it. The initial project was modified attending to the suggestions of the Deputation, competent in the management of the singular trees in Alava. A few platforms of wood supported on the soil were built to let secuoya breathe. The purpose of this was that the public who was visiting it did not walk through the soil . The rest of the space, most of the garden, was covered by a cap made of vegetal remainders that does not invite to tread above the soil. [2]
