The 2018 ConIFA World Football Cup Final was the 3rd final of the Confederation of Independent Football Associations' cup competition. The match was contested between Northern Cyprus and Kárpátalja. This was the first time both teams had reached the final.

Route to the final[edit]

Qualifying[edit]

On 10 June 2017, Northern Cyprus qualified for the World Football Cup as European Football Cup Runners-up, after drawing 1–1 with Padania in the final but then losing 4–2 on penalties. They reached the final after winning 1-0 against future World Football Cup Final opponents Kárpátalja. They also won 8-0 against South Ossetia and drew 0-0 against Abkhazia to finish top of their group. Northern Cyprus met Székely Land in the Semi-final, which ended 2-1 to the Turkish Cypriots.

Kárpátalja actually failed to qualify for the tournament. They were knocked out of the Hungary Heritage Cup at the Semi-final stage on 1 August 2016 after drawing 1-1 to Felvidék, but losing 5-4 on penalties. Felvidék qualified for the tournament for winning the Hungary Heritage Cup. Kárpátalja were also knocked out of the group stages at the European Football Cup, losing to future World Football Cup Final opponents Northern Cyprus 1-0 on 4 June 2017. A 2-2 draw against Abkhazia and a 4-1 win against South Ossetia wasn't good enough to see them through to the Semi-finals.

On 6 January 2018, the draw for the World Football Cup Group Stage was held. Northern Cyprus and Felvidék were both drawn into Group B, alongside Abkhazia and Tibet.

In May 2018, it was announced that Felvidék had withdrawn from the competition. ConIFA decided soon after that Kárpátalja will take Felvidék's place.

Group Stage[edit]

The World Football Cup began on 31 May 2018, with both Northern Cyprus and Kárpátalja playing their first match against each other at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium in Enfield. Former St Mirren forward Billy Mehmet put Northern Cyprus in front after thirteen minutes, before István Sándor equalised for Kárpátalja in the fifty-third minute to end the game 1-1.

The 2017–18 season is Maidenhead United's 148th year in existence and their first season in the National League following promotion from the National League South on 29 April 2017 after a 3–0 win over Margate. The season covers the period from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018.

Season Review[edit]

Pre-season[edit]

After a successful winning season in the National League South, Maidenhead United began their pre-season on 13 July at Alwyns Lane in Chertsey. They scored four goals past Chertsey Town, with Sean Marks scoring in the first minute.

Two days later, 15 July, Maidenhead United traveled to Stag Meadow in Windsor to take on Windsor. Maidenhead won the game 6-0, with Dave Tarpey scoring four goals within the first forty-five minutes. Later that same day, Maidenhead United traveled to Wheatsheaf Park in Staines-upon-Thames where they drew 1-1 with Staines Town; Sean Marks with the goal.

Wealdstone hosted a friendly against Maidenhead United on 18 July at Grosvenor Vale, Ruislip. Jake Hyde put Maidenhead in front after five minutes. The game ended 1-1 thanks to former Maidenhead player Danny Green's equaliser.

The final of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup between Hungerford Town and Maidenhead United was announced by the Berks & Bucks FA to take place on 25 July. Slough Town's Arbour Park was chosen as the neutral ground for the final. Although part of the 2016-17 season, the match became adjacent to Maidenhead's pre-season games due to the game being delayed multiple times. Maidenhead achieved getting to the final as they defeated Aylesbury United 2-0 in the first round, Marlow 2-1 in the quarter-final, and Slough Town 4-2 in the semi-final. A Christian Smith goal after nineteen minutes was enough to see Maidenhead win 1-0 against Hungerford and to win the BBFA Senior Cup.

On 28 July, Maidenhead United played a friendly match at their home ground York Road in Maidenhead, against EFL League Two side Wycombe Wanderers. The game ended in a 1-0 win for Maidenhead thanks to Adebayo Akinfenwa scoring an own goal.

Maidenhead United's final match before their first National League Premier game, took place on 30 July. This match was dedicated to Maidenhead legend Mark Nisbet, whom had announced his retirement from football. Maidenhead hosted a testimonial match for Nisbet, after the player spent ten years playing at the club. A Mark Nisbet XI played Maidenhead in the match, which featured former Maidenhead players. Maidenhead won the game 4-1.

August[edit]

Maidenhead United started the season, on 5 August, with a 1-1 away draw to Maidstone United, Joe Pigott gave Maidstone the lead in the 51st minute before Sam Barratt equalised for Maidenhead in the 88th minute. Three days later, Maidenhead hosted their first home league game at York Road against Wrexham. The Welsh side scored in the 40th minute by Manny Smith, but their lead was cut short two minutes later as Dave Tarpey equalised. Ntumba Massanka scored in the 77th minute to give Wrexham a 2-1 win. On 12 August, Maidenhead hosted Hartlepool United who had recently been relegated from EFL League Two last season. The match was shown live on BT Sport. Dave Tarpey gave Maidenhead the lead in the 34th minute before doubling his, and Maidenhead's, goals in the 58th minute. Pádraig Amond gave Hartlepool a consolation goal in the 87th minute from the penalty spot to end the game 2-1, with Maidenhead earning their first three points of the season. Three days later, Maidenhead traveled to Medlar with Wesham to face Fylde. Maidenhead won the game 4-1, thanks to Dave Tarpey scoring all four goals for the away side. Tarpey scored two first half penalties in the 26th and 37th minutes, before Lewis Montrose got a goal back for the home side within injury time just before half time . Tarpey scored his hattrick in the 58th minute, before finally scoring his 4th of the night within the 78th minute. Dave Tarpey had now scored seven goals after only four games played. Ebbsfleet United were next to visit Maidenhead on 19 August. Harry Pritchard scored his first goal of the season, giving Maidenhead the lead in the 26th minute. However, Luke Coulson equalised for Ebbsfleet in the 50th minute to earn a 1-1 draw. On 26 August, Maidenhead traveled to Barrow-in-Furness where they drew 1-1 with Barrow. Adrian Clifton scored his first goal of the season in the 28th minute before Moussa Diarra equalised in the 56th minute to rescue a point. Two days later on Bank holiday Monday, 28 August, Maidenhead hosted Leyton Orient in front of a crowd of 2,544 spectators, which was York Road's highest attendance of the season. Leyton Orient won the game 1-0 after Macauley Bonne scored after five minutes. This was Dave Tarpey's final game for Maidenhead, because on 31 August, he signed for Barnet. He played two games for Barnet before injuring his anterior cruciate ligament, ruling him out for the rest of the season. Maidenhead United were as high as 7th place in the National League in August, but ended the month in 14th place.

September[edit]

On 2 September, Maidenhead United started the month with a win away at Sutton United. Ryan Upward put Maidenhead in front in the 73rd minute before Harold Odametey scored after ninety minutes to win the game 2-0. A week later, on 9 September, Maidenhead lost 3-2 against Halifax Town. Adam Morgan put the home side in front in the 29th minute. Matt Kosylo then scored twice for Halifax in the 55th and 67th minutes to give the home side a 3-0 lead. However, Maidenhead got two goals back, as Jake Goodman scored in the 79th minute before Sean Marks made it 3-2 after ninety minutes. On 12 September, Maidenhead welcomed Tranmere Rovers to York Road. Maidenhead snatched all three points in the 88th minute as Harry Pritchard scored his second goal of the season to win the game 1-0. On 16 September, Boreham Wood were the visiting team to Berkshire. Maidenhead won 2-1 as Adrian Clifton scored in the 43rd minute followed by another goal in the 61st minute by Ryan Upward. Mark Ricketts got a goal back for Boreham Wood in the 90th minute. Maidenhead played away to Chester on 23 September, losing the game 2-0. Ryan Astels got Chester's first in the 6th minute. Chester were then awarded a penalty after Dean Inman handled the ball within the penalty area. Ross Hannah scored from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute. Maidenhead concluded the month with a 3-0 home win over Guiseley on 30 September. Ryan Upward and Harry Pritchard scored in the 3rd and 5th minutes respectively, until James Comley wrapped the game up with a goal in the 35th minute.
