Movkan, according to Leonti Mroveli, is the son of Togarmah and brother of Kartlos, ancestor of the Movkans, and founder of the city of Movkanet [ka].

Movkan's Territory[edit]

The territory of Movkan according to Vakhushti

Leonti Mroveli writes: "And Movkan gave Mtkuara in the north, from the confluence of the Alazani (and the Kura) to the (Caspian) sea. And he built the city of Movaknet, and settled there."[1]. According to Teimuraz Batonishvili [ka], Movkan named the city he founded Sharavandi, which is presently called Shirvan. Vakhushti Batonishvili did not describe the land of Movkan in the Description of the Kingdom of Georgia, but rather in the atlases created by him. It is indicated the area from Derbent to the Kura River and from the eastern border of Hereti to the Caspian Sea is his land. The name of his city and where it was built differs. Mroveli writes that his city was called Movkanet and was built at the confluence of the Alazani and Kura, and Banitoshvili states that his city was called Sharavandi presently known as Shirvan, which is in eastern Azerbaijan along the Kura. Though, Movkan could have also built two cities.
