Hello! My name is Nicholas DePorzio and I am a physics undergraduate student with research experience in rare particle decays including participation on the CUORE experiment.







CUORE Article Context Memo[edit]

Over the next several weeks I will be expanding the "CUORE" article stub into a full fledged article. My goal is to write the article to the standards of Wikipedia and even work the article towards meeting the "Featured Article" criteria if time permits. As a personal standard, I would like the article to meet the Wikipedia "Did you Know?" eligibility criteria by the time I have finished making contributions.

I chose this topic for my writing for several reasons. First, I am a physics student and the topic of particle physics is of particular interest to me. The CUORE experiment is primarily a particle physics experiment and thus it is naturally interesting for me to write about. One of my advisors is an experimental particle physicist and thus can provide useful explanation and context to me to aide in the creation of this article. Also, and perhaps most importantly, I have past experience researching with the CUORE experiment. Thus, I have already taken the time to fully understand and immerse myself in the topics surrounding the experiment. Additionally, I have been able to capture my own images and video which can be used in the generation of the article without worry of copyright infringement. Additionally, the CUORE experiment is one which is arguably probing some of the most shaking physics of the modern day. Yet, the Wikipedia coverage of this world class experiment is limited to a stub. I believe this topic is of sufficient importance that it, and its participants, deserve a fuller coverage.

While having personal affiliations with the subjects of this article, I intend to write it in a way which juxtaposes it with the greater physics questions it is addressing as well as with the other experiments addressing these questions. This, I hope, will ensure that the subject is covered with a neutral point of view as mandated by the standards of Wikipedia. As the CUORE experiment approaches its data taking phase, it is being more heavily published about in the scientific community. Thus, there exists a rich pool of credible information from which to draw information from for this article. Because this is the case, there should be no need to include unsupported claims in this article and it will be a priority to attach scholarly citations to all claims in order to ensure the credibility of this article. By extracting information from these sources and transforming it into a more approachable and concisely summarized form, I believe I will ensure that the article achieve a high degree of quality in its description of the CUORE experiment.

I believe it goes without question that a good deal of Wikipedia is devoted to articles within the sciences. For many within and apart from the academic community, Wikipedia is a first step for gaining background on a new topic. People are arguably searching for background on a new topic because the topic itself is new to the community. Thus, scientific Wikipedia topics covering new science of the modern day are critical for connecting modern day people to the information they are interested in. As the CUORE experiment is investigating the validity of the most current physics theories in the realm of particles and in particular of majorana fermions, it is an article which merits coverage in Wikipedia and is justly a useful contribution to it.

I will construct this article in my sandbox until I feel it meets the criteria I have set for it above.

CUORE Article Reflection Note[edit]

I want to briefly reflect on my motivations for revising and contributing to this article. As a physics student, particle physics is of particular interest to me. I therefore consider it important that quality and up-to-date information on the subject be readily available to the public. The CUORE experiment is a leading experiment in this field, and having personally participated on the experiment, I felt especially drawn to updating its coverage on Wikipedia.

My search for this article began by browsing the WikiProject Physics topics and stubs and then selecting this article from those lists. I selected it because I feel I've had enough experience with the subject to write comfortably about it.

In writing the article, I set a few personal standards. First, I would join the WikiProject Physics community as a registered contributor and learn the norms of Wikipedia physics articles. I did this and have added the Physics badge to my user page. Similarly, I completed the student training and added that badge to my user page. I also reached out to past contributors to the stub article by leaving messages on the talk page of the article. In writing the article, I decided to draft it in my sandbox to try and meet the eligibility requirements for the Did You know? articles. I am now submitting my article for nomination as a Wikipedia Did You Know? article.
