Synopsis[edit]

Characters[edit]

Main[edit]

  • Emmeline "Emma" Wilson (born Emmeline Brenton)
a 20-year-old college student in H. University who works part-time as a barista; girlfriend of "Elios"; the protagonist of the webtoon. Bearing a troubled past, Emma is infatuated with his boyfriend "Elios" and explores a seemingly smooth sailing romance with him. Soon, her relationship with "Elios" takes a nosedive as apparently unrelated incidents of assaults and suicides happen around her. A fellow student Yohan uncovers the truth behind them all: Emma herself assaulted or murdered the victims in these incidents. Later, it is revealed that she had a crush on the real Elios since the first time she met him when she was still young, but she had acquired chronic hallucinations of an apparently psychopathic and murderous "Elios" while being gripped with extreme guilt after she accidentally stabbed him a year before the apparent start of their "relationship". This is aggravated by the trauma she bore from being abused by her late father when she was still a child.
  • Yohan Lee
a 20-year-old college student in H. University who studies law and works as an amateur detective; the deuteragonist of the webtoon. Though he dreamed of becoming a comic artist, Yohan took up law and have involved himself in solving cases after a person dear to him was falsely accused of a crime and was imprisoned back when he was still young. He soon starts to investigate a series of apparently unrelated assaults and murders (disguised as suicides). Using his deductive skills and his connections with fellow students and the police, he soon concludes that the cases are all related to Emma and "Elios": that "Elios" was just a hallucination and Emma committed all the crimes.
  • Elios Dunsworth
a 20-year-old young man who once worked as a barista and was apparently killed by Emma. Elios is portrayed as an overprotective boyfriend who, unbeknownst to Emma, can resort to murder just to protect his girlfriend. At first, he is pointed as the culprit behind the assaults and murders (disguised as suicides) of people whom he considers as threats to Emma's safety. Later, it is revealed that, a year ago, he was accidentally stabbed by Emma and apparently died from the fatal injury, and he consequently appears as a psychopathic, murderous persona in the guilt-ridden Emma's hallucinations.

Set in a strictly stratified society where humans are born with supernatural powers of varying intensities, the story of the webtoon follows a powerful high school boy who pretends to be weak in the midst of power struggles and multiple murders of anti-hierarchy vigilantes.

Synopsis[edit]

Teenage boy John Doe lives in a harshly stratified society where humans are born with supernatural powers of varying intensities. Those who are stronger feel entitled to oppress those who are weak. John hopes to live a normal and quiet student life in the prestigious Wellston Private High School. But since he is powerless since birth (pejoratively being called a "cripple"), his stronger peers enjoy picking fights against him. Not a single day goes by without him getting beaten up and landing on the school clinic.

Despite being powerless, John is close friends with Seraphina, a girl who has great powers and is feared by many. Seraphina is the "Ace" of the "Royals", a group of Wellston's strongest students. The leader of the Royals, Wellston's "King" Arlo, has his full trust to the hierarchy that defines their society. He disapproves Seraphina's friendship with a cripple, believing it is disruptive of the hierarchy, and he starts being curious of John. When he notices that John remains unfazed by the prospect of being bullied and is brave and skilled enough to fight against his opponents, Arlo suspects that there must be something John is hiding to his peers.

Sure enough, John has a secret he has been keeping for two years since he started going to Wellston—but it is a secret that threatens to bring down the school's entire social order and could send its students fearing for their lives. He in fact possesses powers of unthinkable immensity and he could be downright brutal when triggered. These powers had played a part to his dark past which he is greatly ashamed of and wishes to hide and forget through posing as a cripple. Soon, John fears this secret and his past will be revealed in the midst of the battles in school and the conspiracy surrounding the government's suppression of subversion and the rising number of murders of anti-hierarchy vigilantes.

Plot[edit]

Since childhood, 18-year-old Seo Ji-woo has been hiding the fact that he possesses a supernatural power: he is able to move at very high speeds. While he occasionally uses his superhuman speed in rescuing people, he is ostracized by his peers for being a "freak". He has spent most of his childhood without any friends and fearful of the consequences of exposing his power. While friendless, he develops a penchant for cats (ailurophilia), trying to make himself happy despite his sad life.

One night, Ji-woo's pet cats lead him to a dark alley where he finds what appears to be a chubby stray cat covered with blood. After bringing the cat home in an attempt to nurse it to health, he is shocked to learn that it was actually a person—Kayden, an intimidating man with astounding superpowers who, in his haste, used the chubby stray cat to transfigure himself in order to hide his identity. Through Kayden, Ji-woo learns that he is not a freak but an Awakened One, a human being with supernatural powers. Under Kayden's tutelage, he begins to undergo training in order to harness his power as he soon gets involved in the dangerous world of the Awakened Ones, with its cutthroat duels and murderous villains.

The plot of Eleceed can be can de subdivided into the following story arcs:

Characters[edit]

Main[edit]

  • Seo Ji-woo
an 18-year-old boy who is an Awakened One (human with supernatural powers) capable of superhuman speed; the protagonist of the webtoon. Ji-woo did not have any friends during his childhood due to the fear of revealing his powers. Because of his lack of friends, he becomes fond of cats instead. He began understanding his identity as an Awakened One upon meeting Kayden by chance and becoming his apprentice. He starts having friends among fellow Awakened Ones and gaining confidence in his powers. As a warm-hearted and compassionate boy, he has a genial personality, and he is inclined to feeding stray cats and helping other people who are in need. As Kayden's apprentice, he also gains the power of electrokinesis and prefers to remain "unaffiliated" (independent and not associated with any group/clique of Awakened Ones) like his mentor.
  • Kayden Break (a.k.a. Casein Nitrate)[n]
an unaffiliated Awakened One who possesses immense supernatural powers, primarily in the form of electrokinesis (electricity manipulation); Ji-woo's mentor. Kayden became a formidable Awakened One as he trained and harnessed all of his capabilities all by himself and vanquished all those who challenged him; he is considered as one of the strongest Awakened Ones in the world. After fleeing to South Korea from fellow Awakened Ones who ganged up on him, he takes on the body of a fat yellow-orange stray cat although he is disgusted by the appearance of the cat he used in the transfiguration. He becomes the mentor of the teenage Awakened One Ji-woo who adopted him in his cat form and hastily gave him the pet name "Casein Nitrate".[n]

The use of "Casein Nitrate" in the English translation is to ensure phonetic equivalence since the author intended the nickname to have the same first syllable as the real name (Korean: 이든 Kaideun제인 Kajein; English: Kayden → Casein), although the original meaning of the nickname becomes lost and "casein nitrate" is a non-existent chemical compound.
