Reid E. Mahon (born June 1, 1983 in Saint Paul, Minnesota) is a pitcher for the St. Paul Saints of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. He played college baseball at the University of Minnesota and played in the minor league baseball organization of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Biography[edit]

Mahon grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he was a three-sport athlete at Como Park Senior High School, lettering in basketball, football and baseball.[1] Despite gaining serious interest from many Big Ten schools to play football, such as Purdue, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, Mahon ultimately chose to play baseball at the University of Minnesota, for the Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball team.

Mahon graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Communications in 2006. After playing in 29 games, pitching to a 3-3 win-loss record with a 7.10 earned run average, Mahon went undrafted in the 2006 MLB Draft.[2]

Playing career[edit]

Despite a sub-par collegiate career, Mahon's 90–96 mph fastball was enough to earn him a shot with the Arizona Diamondbacks,[2] who signed him for $500 shortly after he graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2006.[3] He quickly advanced in the organization, starting with the South Bend Silver Hawks of the Class-A Midwest League in 2007, and receiving two promotions, finishing the year with the Mobile Bay Bears of the Class-AA Southern League. He posted a sub-2.00 ERA at all three levels.[3] He was promoted to the Tucson Sidewinders of the Class-AAA Pacific Coast League in 2008.[4] That offseason, he pitched in the Arizona Fall League, as farm director A. J. Hinch indicated he had a chance of making it to MLB.[3]

In 2009, Mahon was invited to spring training with the Arizona Diamondbacks as a non-roster invitee before being reassigned to minor league camp. Due to an early season injury, Mahon was assigned to the Diamondbacks' double-A club before being called up to AAA on July 5, 2009. He missed the 2011 season with a finger injury and was released by the Diamondbacks. He signed with the independent league St. Paul Saints for 2012.[1]
