Selegiline, sold under the brand names Eldepryl among others, is a medication used to treat parkinsonism including in Parkinson's disease and major depressive disorder.[5][2][6] It is used by mouth or as a patch applied to skin.[2][6]

When taken by mouth, common side effects include nausea, lightheadedness, dry mouth, headache, and hallucinations.[5] When applied as a patch, common side effects include trouble sleeping, rash, and a stuffy nose.[6] Other side effects may include serotonin syndrome, low blood pressure, urge to gamble, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and sudden onset of sleep.[5] It is a monoamine oxidase B inhibitor at lower doses, while at higher doses it is also a monoamine oxidase A inhibitor.[2][5] It works by increasing brain levels of dopamine and serotonin.[6][5]

Selegilinewas approved for medical use in the United States in 1989.[5] In the United Kingdom 100 tablets of 10 mg costs the NHS about £32 as of 2021.[2] This amount in the United States costs about 130 USD.[7] In the United States a month of patches costs about 1,800 USD.[8]
