OpEdNews (OEN) is a United States–based news website founded in 2003,[6] ranked by Technorati as a Top 100 Blog.[7] Providing news, opinion, editorial, activism, and community from a progressive/liberal standpoint, the site reports 200,000–800,000 unique visitors every month and over 90,000 registered members.[3]

Its stated mission is to "provide a content management, social networking website that supports bottom-up, progressive visions, communications and tools for activism and organizations."[3] As an award-winning political hybrid blog "accessible by anyone ... enabling them to share articles," OpEdNews aggregates news, well-considered analysis, diaries, and surreal satire into what it calls "the Drudge Report for progressives".[3][8][9]

The site regularly features articles by journalists (such as Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hedges),[10] politicians (such as U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders),[11] commentators, and activists (such as filmmaker Michael Moore),[12] as well as first-time writers.

Editorial philosophy[edit]

OpEdNews' goal is to be holistic, to cover politics, arts (movies, books, music, theater, etc.,) sciences, health, Mass media, business, technology, sports, travel, citizen journalism and various strange and unusual stuff.

OpEdNews uses a custom built content management system designed by founder Rob Kall,[13] produced by populum.com. It includes features not found in other blog/media content management sites, such as an image search and insertion program that finds creative commons images and inserts them in content with attribution automatically included, a multi-level editing system that allows editors with different degrees of responsibility to access a queue of submitted articles and edit then accept or reject them. The site has over 50 editors who volunteer their time to review hundreds of submissions each month.[13]

Opednews is one of 4500 websites indexed by Google News.[14]

The opinions shared by experts on the OpEdNews.com website have themselves been used as sources upon which many books have been written and published.

The site was a nominee in the 2007 Blogger's Choice Awards for 'Best Political Blog', 'Best Blog Design', and 'Best Education Blog.[32] Editor Rob Kall won the Pillar Human Rights Award for International Persons of Conscience for the site in 2013.[33]
