Scrolling refs

I like them as they save space in articles where there are a lot of refs (eg, Australian Defence Force which now has 120 refs). I do agree that they're potentially a bit anoying, and am not terribly attached to their use, so feel free to remove them if you think that they're not needed. --Nick Dowling 07:21, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Discuss the reverse change on page: Taruna Nusantara

Hi Merbabu, Please elaborate your reason behind the undone of my work on the following page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taruna_Nusantara , particularly the removal of "Replication" part. I can't agree on your point that a note on sister schools is unappropriate for an encyclopedia, where we also see entries sister cities and such in the same encyclopedia. Southern Illinois University Carbondale

Hi there. I wanted to ask you what objection you had to the information I readded to the Southern Illinois University Carbondale article. I understand why you removed the trivia section in the first place, but I am at a loss as to why the subsequent information was removed. I incorporated the information on the school's mascot into the body of the article by placing it under the athletic heading, where information on the school's athletic mascot should go, and added an appropriate source to reference the information. I don't understand what more you expect. What beyond that needs to be done for the information to stay in the article?-Dekkanar 01:04, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Your edit summary that actually requests 'trivia' put me off. I now see you didn’t have it under a lazy ‘trivia’ heading. I’m not in a position to judge notability for this article, but if people were to call it trivia, then I am inclined to think it is not notble, hence trivial and fit for removal. kind regards --Merbabu 01:47, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Online maps

Hi there. Sorry - haven't had a chance to reply to your e-mail. I'm not sure I can help much. I downloaded the map I based the United States of Indonesia map on from this location: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Indonesia_blank_map.svg then edited it using Inkscape. I then converted it to PNG format. I know there's a super-fancy way of overlaying data on the base map as in the map in Jakarta, but I haven't figured out how to do it. I did a quick internet search, but all the sites used long words and were written by people who don't get out much. Did you have any particular map in mind that you wanted to produce? Citing Sources

Hi Merbabu,

What's the best way for me to cite sources for the fameous students of Mount Temple? I was at the school and can know that all but one of the fameous students were (1) students and (2) are fameous for the reason claimed. I can probably find Google references for most of them, but I'm not sure how authorititive they would be. David Malone 06:59, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply - Judging by the U2 page, I need to be adding footnotes that point to published (online or otherwise) sources that mention why the person is fameous and/or that they attended Mount Temple? Doing that for most of the entries shouldn't be a problem for me. I have a suspicion that one of the entries is some sort of vandalism, 'cos I haven't been able to turn up any evidence for the claim yet, but I'll check it more carefully before I delete anything and try to add suitable citations for the others (if that is what is recommended).

Help with vandalism

Hi there, thanks to your previous assistance with the U2 articles I am turning to you for assistance again. I've stumbled across an anonymous user who is vandalizing a large number of articles related to The Police (and others). I started reverting the changes but the sheer volume of edits this person has made over the past 3 days is depressing. I am fairly certain it is all vandalism, based on the nature of the changes and previous postings to their Talk page. I'm really surprised no one else has caught on yet but it is subtle vandalism, one of the worst kinds. The user is 68.203.151.76 and the list of their changes is here. How can I undo the massive damage this person is causing AND stop them from doing more? I can provide plenty of examples if required. Thanks!! Z00ropean 02:53, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Mosman Photos

G'Day Merbabu, I went to a lot of effort to take those photos and they can't be found anywhere else on the internet, so I wish you wouldn't delete them. I agree with your comment that prince albert terrace has nothing to do with history. It was built in the 90s on top of an old service station. The hadn't posted that photo in history but another editor rearranged them that way.

I totally agree with your other comment Please write more, rather than post irrelevant pics. If editors believe that there are too many photos for the amount of text in the article, then maybe they should try to expand the articles. However, photos of contemporary buildings are just as relevant as the historical ones.

Have a look at some good examples for other Sydney suburbs eg. Ashfield, New South Wales. They have plenty of photos to accompany the articles. J Bar 22:56, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

OK, thanks for your message. I don't have that much time right now, but we can work something out. I'd just like to see photos that are directly relevant to the article text, rather than for decoration. Airports and lists of information which don't agree with WP:NOT#DIR

Thank heavens, someone who feels exactly the same way I do about this information. I could kiss you right now! I know you won't get this to change overnight, but i'm trying to get some of the crap out of these sections universally to at least reduce the length of these lists. The core issue which we both agree isn't right stems from the structure guidelines for Airport articles (which when you take a look you'll see is sheer madness). If you want to weigh in on the project talk on this issue, please feel free to do so. Any support I can get to bring about some sanity on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to get me on talk or off-wiki via email with any q's. If you want an example of real madness, take a look at Suvarnabhumi_Airport#Airlines_and_destinations, and this is after it's been cleaned up to at least reduce it's length and not cause me to get offside with the Airports project. Architecture

Wiping out some newbie's edit with the explanation "OR??" is a bit unkind. You have several options. One of them is "citation needed". In fact, part of what was said had a citation to support it.--Amandajm 15:42, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

I have zero tolerance to unreferenced or poorly referenced material. Look at this mess: Military of Indonesia. Look at the history page. All kind messages to 'newbie' editors fell on deaf ears. Merbabu 15:47, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
I deal mainly with art and architecture, from an historical point of view. For the most part, its not politically sensitive. So if a young person quotes something they have just learnt in class, or have just seen in yet another TV program about Leonardo da Vinci, one can afford to be gentle and ask for citation, if the info seems at all worth retaining.
Here's a case. Architecture has a great deal of material that was well and concisely written, but the page was moved several years ago. If it was ever sourced, then that has been lost. I've tried to track down those who might be able to cite references and have not been able to do so. The option is to delete half of a well-written and useful page, for lack of references. I think the bottom line is whether or not the information is likely to be challenged.
In the case of that recent info on the Arch. page, I had already written the person a note, asking them to go back and review what they had written because it was in the wrong section and much too long. I was trying not to discourage them from writing, but to have greater awareness in the way they did it.

I think everything should be referenced. It's not hard. Just because something is not challenged doesn't mean that it is correct. I'd much rather see less info if it means it is verified and of quality, than reams of useless unverified info. My mo is to get in at the point of addition where they are likely (one hopes) to have the references on hand. THere's no point asking for references 6 months later as you moved architecture page example suggests. I take your point on *how* to go about getting the refs, it's just in my opinion people don't want to come to the party - generally speaking.
By the way, the Architecture page images are still a problem. I will discuss later with you if I get around to it.  :) --Merbabu 07:44, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Airport articles

This discussion over destination lists has been raised time and time again on the Wikiproject Airports talk pages (I'm sure there are more in the archives). Personally, while I do think it may be notable, I personally dont agree with how it's currently layed out. There however has been ways to incorporate this, see Ben_Gurion_International_Airport, a featured article, as an example.

Furthermore If you want to remove the destinations lists from Kingsford Smith International Airport, this wuld mean removing lists from every Airport article worldwide that comes under the Airports Wikiproject category. I would suggest seeking consensus for removal of destinations from every Airport article on the Airports Wikiproject talkpage before proceeding. --Arnzy (talk · contribs) 08:38, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I certainly remember his continuous efforts at Sydney! When he moved on to his movie articles as Angel2001 I guess everyone let him go off and annoy another crowd. Even there though he kept uploading images he found on the internet and incorporating them as fair use, so really he's earned himself two indefinite blocks (I believe only arbcom or Wales can hand out bans). Cropping U218 Singles photo

Would it be acceptable to crop the U218 Singles cover and use the photo in the U2 article to illustrate how the band members looked as teenagers? I'm not entirely sure about the copyright situation of the photo - it's been used on the cover of the compilation and their autobiography, but that doesn't mean any version of the photo is free... NEW @U2 THERE'S AN ALBUM IN THERE: LARRY July 27, 2007 posted by: Miranda U2.com has posted its third article about the band's recent magical mystery tour of Fez, Morocco, where they spent time writing tunes with Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. You have to be a U2.com subscriber to read the full article, but here's a few highlights:

  • Larry says it's important to "suprise people" musically and that by the end of the last tour everyone thought making "part two of the rock record would not be right."
  • He says they have written at least 30 or 40 songs and there's "definitely an album in there," but they "might be short of one or two songs of a certain nature but I think we’ve got a record."
  • They'd like to work more quickly but don't want to speculate about a release date for the new album.

newsletter

i can give you 2 options: i can delay the newsletter until 29th july so you can add or change it or i can leave it how it is and you can help on the 3rd newsletter. it will be released around the end of august but we are starting work on it on the first week in august so we can mess around with it (maybe a new layout or just quick edits) since this one was made in 2 days i think it is too much of a rush. i would rather leave the 2nd and you help on the 3rd but this is a free site and im a nice guy. but please let me know asap what you are choosing. Indonesian articles

Hi there. I have been thinking about your question about getting people to edit more Indonesian articles. I have two ideas:

  • Promote the idea of an article of the week/month that everybody tries to improve. Perhaps there should be more than one, as I spotted a few that are of no interest to me personally, and I'm sure others have been in the same boat. If all people see are "interesting articles", they will get put off
  • Push/encourage people to look at the Category:Indonesia stubs page. I have recently started using this as a launching pad for forays into Wikipedia. Just my dua sen worth. Davidelit 14:45, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Administrative divisions of Indonesia

Hi again. I may have just stirred a hornet's nest. I just made a minor edit to Medan, and when I cross-referenced to Administrative divisions of Indonesia I noticed that the changes I made are a bit inconsistent. At the risk of coming across as a bule sombomg, I believe the follwoing transaltions of Indonesian administrative divisions (as used by the Jakarta Post and Tempo magazine make more sense:

  • kotamadya - municipality
  • kecamatan - district
  • kelurahan - sub-district (in cities only)
  • desa - village
  • dusun - hamlet
  • RT - neighborhood unit
  • RW - community unit

At present, we jump straight to 'kecamatan' as sub-district - sub of what? Davidelit 14:52, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
