Badlands is a hunting soft goods company founded in 1994, their original pursuit of creating backpacks that were to be used in mountaineering expeditions changed when they saw the desperate need for efficient load bearing packs in the early 90's. Bill Crawley the original founder of the predecessor company Vortex Outdoors started Badlands with the idea to use technology such as Polyurethane molded foam, breathable back suspensions and Hypalon

Vortex Outdoors[edit]

Before Badlands packs there was Vortex Outdoors a company also founded by Bill Crawley. Vortex Outdoors was a pioneering mountaineering company that was located in Utah.

Early Years[edit]

Badlands did not only create backpacks for the introduction of the hunting line, they were also creating items such as headlamp caps, fanny packs and ATV gear.

Badlands launch of their camping gear in late 2014 sparked the interest of many with their unique approach to strong branding color choice. The original product lineup included the Mirage Tent, Cinder and Caldera Sleeping Bag.
