Due to the nature of being a student I take frequent, unpredictable wikibreaks.[edit]

I greatly enjoy this project, and the democratization of knowledge. However, my life obliges me to take significant pauses to focus on more acute matters, and at times, the intense bureaucracy of this place can be quite overwhelming.

What role does language play in limiting our knowledge or efficacy in communication, both in general and on Wikipedia?
What systemic barriers does language create, and how can we help to reduce their harm?

In general, if you reach out to me, I will respond in the language that your correspondence is written in, so if you have a preference from the languages other than English of which I have some knowledge of, please feel free to use it.

Things I'm working on

I imagine that much of my work as I return will be on revision rather than new content, as well as improvement of media on articles. I used to focus on copy-editing and will likely do lots of that again; one barrier that language can create is when it is used ineffectively. We can do better to eliminate bias and provide information by being precise, concise, and eloquent with the way that we write.

I hope to get back into working on the Wikimedia Commons as well. I also hope to translate articles from Spanish, and perhaps Chinese, to English. There are many times I notice a disparity in the quality of articles between languages when I am reading Wikipedia. Imagine if this barrier did not exist, and all knowledge was available in all languages!

A Modest Proposal

I believe it would be possible, and quite useful, to train a machine learning algorithm to check for fails of basic Wikipedia policies. Some policies of focus would be those centered around living persons and basic requirements for notability that all articles need to meet. This is something I am very interested in doing, so in the coming weeks I may post an experimental github repo and try it on a localized (i.e., a cloned Wikipedia downloaded to my system rather than the actual hosted Wikipedia). If anyone else has interest in this idea, please leave a message on my talk page.
