Biography[edit]

I am Nina Baker, a former merchant navy deck officer, environmental campaigner and engineer and now an engineering historian.

Research[edit]

My principal areas of publishedresearch interest are:

  • Women in engineering, especially Scotland
  • Women in construction trades and professions
  • Women in STEM current and past
  • Construction history, especially labourforce and economic cycles

Other topics I am interested in:

  • Disability issues
  • Gender equality in the workplace
  • Green politics
  • Urban food growing

Education[edit]

I have a First Mate's Certificate of Competency (foreigngoing), BSc hons 2.1 in Engineering Design with Appropriate Technology and PhD in the durability of high alumina cement[1]

Memberships[edit]

I am a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland (FIESIS), Honorary Member of the Women's Engineering Society (HMWES), member of the Construction History Society and a supporter of the Glasgow Women's Library where my collection of books and archives on women in STEM is now housed. I am also a member of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow.
