Castrol Australia[edit]

Introduction[edit]

Castrol Australia is a subset of the worldwide renowned distributor, marketer, and manufacturer of lubricating oils for automotives Castrol [1]. With 300+ employees helping contribute to the Australian subset of the company, Castrol Australia is just one of 120 countries working under Castrol[2]. The automotive company specialises in generating and distributing many forms of lubricant, grease and premium oils for vehicles ranging from All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) to standard commercial vehicles[3].

With the company’s origins lying in Britain, Castrol Australia is an offset of parent company Castrol[2]. The sheer amount of power behind this company has allowed for innovations in the development of lubrication for vehicles utilized for industrial, sporting and commercial purposes. Castrol Australia has had long standing collaborations and sponsorship with V8 Supercars, MotoGP and Prodrive Racing Australian Racing Team drivers Mark Winterbottom, Chaz Mostert and Cameron Waters[4]. Castrol has also been involved with providing lubricant to NASA’s rover ‘Curiosity'.

History[edit]

Castrol’s history begins in 1899, under brand ‘CC Wakefield Company’ and was initially started by a man named Charles “Cheers” Wakefield[5]. The company initially sold lubricant suited to trains and heavy machinery[5]. At the advent of the 20th Century, the company expanded took an invested interest in both the aeroplane and the automobile[6]. The company then grew to incorporate lubricants, coolant, antifreeze, and brake fluid to suit industrial, commercial, and domestic vehicles[6].

New discoveries regarding the development of oils derived from castor beans led to the CC Wakefield rebranding - they then became Castrol. Innovations with motor oil within the company then went on to develop products and services more geared toward a more commercial and domestic audience. By developing a research facility within Bracknell, England in the sixties[5]. The company was then bought out by The Burmah Oil Company which then led to the company to grow even bigger and the company was then bought out by BP in 2000 and is still owned by BP[5]. Such expansions led to Improvements with technology led to the introduction of the best oil and lubricants under titles like Castrol EDGE 5w60 and Castrol Netlube. With a growing popularity surrounding the products produced by Castrol, this British company then chose to establish bases across the globe, including Castrol Australia. The choice to establish a base in Australia then led to advent of long-standing business partnerships with V8 Supercars, MotoGP and Prodrive.

Castrol Six Hour[edit]

Alongside these moments, Castrol Australia was also involved with the Castrol Six Hour Race which lasted between 1970-1987.With a cash prize of $1,000 for the victor of the race, the race was remained a popular event for the majority of it's lifespan. Complete with television coverage and sponsorship, the six-hour is often cited as an aspect that contributed to the surge of motorcycle sales within this period. With 68 riders ready for the last race rub, held on on Sunday the 18th of October 1970, the race ended on account of changing trends within the racing culture within Australia.

The six hour endurance race was initially started by Willoughby District Motorcycle Club and hosted at Amaroo Park until 1983. This event was later moved to Oran Park and, despite criticisms, remained the main location for the Castrol Six Hour well until 1987. The race had three classes of riders. These classes were 250 CC , 500 CC and Unlimited which was later changed capped to 1000 CC on account of safety regulations.

Attempts to revive interest in the Castrol Six Hour have been held within Phillip Island and Eastern creek throughout the 1990's and early 2000's. The Castrol Six Hour is also known to have occur within New Zealand.

Racing Sponsorships[edit]

Castrol Australia have had a long history supporting the racing industry within Australian landscape[7]. Up until present day, Castrol Australia have supported, Prodrive racing, Supercars and recently have supported Renault Sports F1 races[8].

Supercars Championship[edit]

Castrol Australia and select products such as the Castrol EDGE[9] have been involved in numerous events surrounding Supercars Championships.

Castrol Australia have sponsored key drivers such as Larry Perkins, driver for the Holden Dealer team and Team Perkins from 1992 up until 2005[10]. Through this sponsorship with Larry Perkins, Castrol's longstanding involvement with racing culture within Australia has led to three Bathurst wins[11]. These successes within the Bathurst 1000 races occurred throughout the years of 1993, 1995 and 1997 [11]

Alongside key racers, Castrol have also been involved in sponsoring past events for the V8 Supercars, including the Castrol Townsville 500, situated in North Queensland [12]. The event held in 2004, was one that was generated in order to help sustain interest in motorsport industry and was intended to by a multi-year commitment from the official oil partner [12]. The move was one that was ultimately received a positive reception and was welcomed by V8 supercars CEO James Warburton [12]

“Castrol is widely acknowledged as the world’s leading specialist provider of lubricant solutions and has enjoyed a rich history within V8 Supercars racing since its’ inception,” Warburton said.[12]

The Renault Sport Formula One Team[edit]

Recently in 2017, BP and Castrol have all partnered within the Renault to support the Renault Sport F1 Team[8]. The joint partnership with Renault Sport Formula One Team is the first time Castrol and Renault have partnered together since 1997 [11]. During their last partnership for the Formula 1 Constructors Championship and the Drivers' Championship, Williams Renault achieved milestones by succeeding in winning in both races[11]. The Renault Sport Formula One Team has been managed by president Jérôme Stoll and managing director Cyril Abiteboul.

Prodrive Racing[edit]

Castrol Australia, within recent years, has been involved with sponsoring select drivers within the Prodrive Racing Team including Chaz Mostert, Mark Winterbottom and Cameron Waters [13]. Throughout Castrol Australia's sponsorship with these select racecar drivers, Chaz Mostert won the Bathurst 1000 in 2014 while Mark Winterbottom was victorious within 2013 [14]. Both racers were racing for the Ford Racing team and opted to use the Ford FG Falcon during their winning runs of the Bathurst 1000 [15].

Products[edit]

Castrol Australia mainly specialize in creating engine oils, lubricants and greases that are suited for a wide range of automobiles. The company is able to create these products and cater to a global audience on account of their worldwide scale[16]. Product changes and creations are influenced by those operating within the Castrol Technology Centres, situated across the globe [17]. Key products sold by Castrol Australia include the Castrol Magnatec 10w40 and the Castrol Edge 5w40 and Castrol Edge 10w30 [18].

Alongside these, the company also provides Castrol oil guides, fluid guides alongside an engine oil selector referred to as Castrol Netlube[19].

With over 7,000 employees worldwide, Castrol Australia produces products and services that suit commercial and industrial vehicles[16].
