About Me[edit]
Bruce Sharky, FASLA is Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University. He earned the BLA and MLA degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. HIs major professor was Garrett Eckbo with other academic influences under whom he studied include Robert Royston, Donald Appleyard, Robert Twiss, Geraldine Knight Scott, and Mai Arbegast. He has been at LSU since 1990 when he joined the faculty as Director. Prior to his tenure at LSU he was a partner in the landscape architecture firm Land Design North, Inc. in Anchorage, Alaska. He is a licensed landscape architect, State of New Mexico and was made a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1989.
Current interests focus on informing design through culture and environment and non-structural approaches of planning natural disaster resilient communities and regions. His long-term interests are in Latin American cultural and design-related issues (cross-cultural) with a focus on Art and Design and the Mexican experience. He authored the book: "Ready, Set, Practice: Professional Practice in Landscape Architecture, published by the John Wiley & Sons Press.
Professor Sharky has led summer field trip studies to Mexico (seven summers and two spring programs), the Netherlands, and China. He included a group of students in semester study abroad at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal. That semester included field studies of cultural and landscape sites in Spain including Granada, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Cordoba. In June 2011 he with his wife and daughter trekked 200 km of the walk to Santiago de Compostella Pilgrimage in the provinces of Asturias and Galicia, Spain. During the first two weeks of August he led a group of landscape architecture students from LSU on a field study course in Alaska to work on a update of visitor facilities at Kenai Fjords National Park for the National Park Service.
Noteworthy Professional Accomplishments[edit]
-Master's thesis on California Coastal Planning Options was the basis for legislation that established the California Coastal Commission.
-Principal Landscape Architect for wildlife habitat and landscape restoration for the 860 mile Trans-Alaskan Oil Pipeline.
-Founding principle of Land Design North, Inc. Anchorage, Alaska
-Fulbright School in Mexico in 1998 and was honored as the Fulbright Distinguished Professor in Landscape Architecture at the University of the Algarve, Portugal in 2003.
-Director, School of Landscape Architecture, Louisiana State University 1990-2002
- Summer of 2011 walked to Santiago de Compostela, Spain starting at the city of Ponferrada for a distance of 200 km. then in June of 2012 walked from Bayonne, France to Saint John, over the Pyrenees Mountains to Pamplona.
