Obvio! Automotoveículos S.A. is a Brazilian automobile manufacturer that specializes in the production of microcars. Commonly referred to as Obvio!, the name means "Of course!" or "Obviously!" Plans were made to sell their cars in the United States through the ZAP distribution network.[1][2] The company was wound down for a while with the death of vehicle designer Anísio Campos in 2019.

Details[edit]

Obvio! vehicles are described as "high performance urban cars". The Obvio! 828 and the Obvio! 012 are mid-engined models powered by a 1.6 L 16-valve inline 4-cylinder Tritec engine producing 115 hp (86 kW). Versions producing 170 hp (130 kW) or 250 hp (190 kW) are also available. Fuel consumption is 12.5 km/L (35 mpg‑imp; 29 mpg‑US) in the city or 17.3 km/L (49 mpg‑imp; 41 mpg‑US) in highway. These are flexible-fuel vehicles that run on either gasoline, pure ethanol (E100), or any mix thereof. The cars are fitted with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that can mimic a 6-speed sequential gearbox.

The chassis is designed as a series of ellipses (a system called "Niess Elliptical Survival Rings") to be strong yet light. The cars have one bench seat that seats three, and are fitted with airbags. It has McPherson suspension and disc brakes all around. The internal and external panels of the bodyshell are made in ABS/PMMA plastic. It uses scissor doors and also has a Boblbee backpack space integrated into the design.

Beschreibung[edit]

The company was founded in 2001 in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The aim was to produce a technologically advanced city vehicle that would use all the possibilities of modern information technology in technology and sales. The initial production target was 10,000 vehicles per year.

The industrial, technical and logistical effort should be borne by different companies through outsourcing. The plan was to use two-cylinder Weber engines with 750 cc and 40 kW (54 hp) (or 96 kW (129 hp) with a turbocharger). The choice later fell on a domestic Tritec engine with a displacement of 1.6 L and 85 kW (114 hp). The body made of glass fiber reinforced plastic was to be supplied by MVC. The chassis and undercarriage were to consist of elliptical Niess rings, which had been patented in 1977 by Brazilian aeronautical engineer Marc William Niess. The design was again entrusted to Campos, who was one of the four owners of the company.

Models[edit]

The model history to date has been characterized by numerous announcements that were very optimistic regarding the planned production figures and only a few examples that were actually manufactured.

828/2[edit]

From 2003 onwards, the monthly production of 50 small cars of the 828/2 type was initially planned. It was a modernized version of the Dacon 828 developed by Campos. The 2.65 m (104 in) long 828/2 was based on Volkswagen technology (1.6 L engine and four-speed transaxle like the Dacon) and had minor visual changes compared to the Dacon. The vehicle was awarded the 18th Design Prize of the Museu da Casa Brasileira (2004).

Instead of the start of production, a complete redesign of the 828/2 followed. The Volkswagen engine technology was replaced by Tritec and the chassis was redesigned. The most noticeable changes were the scissor doors and an upgraded interior, including a computer that was permanently connected to the Internet. A corresponding prototype was exhibited at trade fairs in the USA. The estimated purchase price was USD 14,000.[1]

There are conflicting information about production. While Muzar states an annual production of 600 units from or for 2005, according to Scharinger, Obvio had neither started production nor the announced export to the USA by 2007. [2] However, export to Europe has already been announced.[2]

Prototyp 012[edit]

Prototype 012

With the 012, another study was presented, which was also designed by Anísio Campos. This 3.05 m long vehicle had a more powerful engine (163 hp) and a six-speed gearbox. The start of production was planned for the end of 2005 and should be made possible through the sale of the 828/2 models.

In November 2005, the first, albeit slightly modified, real-size prototype of the 012 was officially presented. This prototype was still not ready to drive by 2007.

828H / 828E

In 2006, electric vehicles based on the 828 and 012 were announced for export to North America. For this purpose, a strategic partnership was concluded with the US manufacturer ZAP, which had ordered 50,000 vehicles in advance as the exclusive dealer. [4]

In October 2009 the company announced that it would be taken over by Vrooom! Veículos Elétricos, which was run by the same owners as Obvio.

As a result, it was planned to produce a hybrid model called 828H in three versions with 70, 140 or 200 hp, which would have a range of 500 km and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4 seconds. The production target for the first phase was 10,000 units per year and later 70,000 vehicles.

In 2014 and 2015, production of the 828H was scheduled to begin by buggy manufacturer Wake Motors at its factory in São José dos Pinhais. The joint company DirijaJa was founded for sales via a leasing system, in which a British investment company also has a stake. [5] [6]

In 2015 the model was renamed 828E.
