The term immersive technology refers to the technology that is used to create virtual world for its users. Immersive technology uses a simulated world to create the feel of being in a physical world. This surrounding sensory feeling felt by the user gives the user a sense of immersion. The blend of virtual reality and augmented reality is called mixed reality.

Origin[edit]

Immersive technology was initially only a work on science fiction with the concept of VR was formulated in the 1960s and the first commercial VR tools appeared in the late 1980s.[1] Appearing in futuristic novels and films. "In one of the first short stories to imagine a virtual reality, Pygmalion’s Spectacles, published in 1935, characters wear goggles to experience “a movie that gives one sight and sound…taste, smell, even touch. […] You are in the story, you speak to the shadows, and the shadows reply, and instead of being on a screen, the story is all about you, and you are in it”.[2]The origination of VR technology began in the 1950s using photos ,but has progressed greatly in the years since

Components[edit]

A fully immersive, perceptually-real environment will consist of multiple components.

Perception[edit]

The following technologies are used in virtual reality to activate all 5 senses.

Vision
Auditory
Tactile
Olfaction
Gustation

Interaction[edit]

These technologies are used in Virtual reality technologies and give the ability to create a virtual environment

Software[edit]

The Software works in cohesion with the hardware technology to create the virtual environments and also processes the user input into that virtual environment. This allows for real-time and dynamic responses to the user. The Software uses a combination of Artificial intelligence and Virtual worlds. The software used varies by the environment and technology.

Application[edit]

Virtual reality also plays a major role in Military and Law enforcement training. The immersive technology allows people to be placed into real life tactical situations without the danger of those situations. This is phenomenal training tool and is the closest thing to real life without actually being there on the battlefield or crime scene.[3]

Research and development[edit]

Many universities continue to research the capabilities and advancements of Virtual reality technology. Some examples of universities would be University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Oklahoma State University and the University of Southern California. All of these universities and more are researching the advancement of the technology along with the different uses that VR could be applied to.[4]
