Plot[edit]

Kuzhandaiyum Deivamum[edit]

Chandrasekar "Sekar", Sundaram and Sathyabama "Bama" are classmates in a Madurai college. Sekar has a soft corner for Bama, the only daughter of Ramalingam and Alamelu, the owners of Alamelu Bus Company. While Ramalingam maintains a low profile, Alamelu is a proud and class conscious lady, who manages her home and the business with an iron hand. Due to Alamelu's influence, Bama grows up as an arrogant and proud girl. Sekar and Bama fall for each other, with the help of Sundaram, who plays a catalyst. When Alamelu learns about this development, she objects, as Sekar is surviving with the scholarship provided by Ramalingam as a token of gratitude for the help received from Sekar's grandfather. Though Sekar decides to stay away from Bama, at the insistence of Bama, Alamelu agrees for the wedding after thoroughly grilling Sekar and finding him to be intelligent and smart. After the wedding, Sekar moves into Bama's house. He starts working at Alamelu Bus Company as the Manager but feels suffocated with a lack of power to decide or to handle finances.

A year later, Bama delivers twin girls Lalitha "Lalli" and Padmini "Pappi". Sekar finds it extremely difficult to work under Alamelu. Alamelu insulting Sekar's friends who came as guests for an official function infuriates Sekar, who decides to move out of the house with his wife and children and asks Bama to come along. As Bama hesitates and tries to pacify Sekar, Alamelu interferes and pushes Bama into a room. Bama falls down while being pushed and faints. Not knowing this, Sekar keeps knocking and banging the door asking Bama to come out and leave the house with him. He misunderstands the silence as her reluctance to accompany him and walks out of the home with one of the twins and travels to Singapore. He struggles for some time without a job there, but when he saves a rich man's daughter, he gets a job and later becomes a partner to his employer. Bama longs for her husband and daughter and releases several advertisements in papers with no avail.

Few years pass by and the girls grow up. Sekar shifts to Madurai and gets his daughter Padmini "Pappi" in the same school of Lalli his other daughter raised by Bama, studies. Though their appearance is similar and both are intelligent, they are chalk and cheese. While Pappi is disciplined and humble, Lalli is proud and arrogant due to her grandmother's influence. Sekar appoints Nirmala as a dance teacher for Pappi. Nirmala and her mother Sogusu scheme to take advantage of Sekar's loneliness.

Sundaram, who is unemployed joins Sekar. Sundaram takes good care of Pappi and tries to unite Bama and Sekar. Nirmala and Sogusu tactfully move into Sekar's house. Pappi and Lalli often fight at school and when they fight during an excursion, their teacher locks them in a room for a whole night, which helps them to start liking each other and also realize that they are in fact, twins of the same parent.

When Pappi is away on an excursion, Sekar falls ill and Nirmala serves him alcohol instead of medicine and he gets addicted. When Sekar is in an inebriated condition, Nirmala seduces him and brings him very close to her. The next morning, Sogusu finding Nirmala and Sekar in a compromising position creates a ruckus. Though Sekar is unable to recollect the previous night's happenings, to save Nirmala from disgrace, promises to marry her. Pappi and Lalli who long for their mother's and father's love respectively, decide to change places taking advantage of their similar appearance and Pappi goes to Bama as Lalli and Lalli come to Sekar as Pappi when they return from the excursion. Their behavior at the new places surprises the elders and Sundaram learns the truth but promises to support.

Sekhar tries to convince Lalli disguised as Pappi about his marriage to Nirmala and every time the issue is raised, she refuses. When Sundaram tries to expose Nirmala, Sekar slaps him. Lalli gets upset and demands that Nirmala gets out of the home. This irritates Nirmala, who pushes Lalli out resulting in her fainting. Sekar reprimands Nirmala and rushes to the hospital with Lalli. Sundaram informs Pappi about the incident and when Pappi cries on getting this news, Ramalingam and Bama learn that the girl in their house is Pappi and not Lalli and the girls interchanged their positions. Inspite of Alamelu resisting, Ramalingam and Bama rush to meet Lalli. Bama on seeing Sekar falls at his feet and begs forgiveness. However, Sekar does not yield and tells her that he is rich enough to take care of both his daughters and throws Bama out. He locks the girls in a room and Bama refuses to leave and waits outside Sekar's home. The girls pray to God to unite their parents and suddenly remember Sundaram's suggestion that praying at the Murugan Temple, Palani would be very effective. They plan to go to Palani and Sogusu sees an opportunity to rid them. She helps them escape and also hires a professional killer to kill the girls at the temple town.

The next morning, Sekar realizes that Bama is still waiting outside his home, and inspite of Sundaram pleading with him to accept Bama, he refuses. When he returns home, he overhears a conversation between Nirmala and Sogusu and understands their manipulation of his relationship with Nirmala and their present plan to get the children killed to usurp his wealth. He gets shocked and beats the mother and daughter and pushes them out of his house. He regrets his mistake of not trusting Bama and with her, he rushes to Palani to save the girls. The girls are saved on time and the family unites.

Deivapiravi[edit]

Madhavan is a construction supervisor for Saminatha Pillai. He loves Thangam, a construction worker, and with the consent of her foster brother Nair and her mother, he marries Thangam. They live together with his younger brother Manohar and Thangam's mother and her younger brother Ramu. Pillai tells Madhavan that he noticed Manohar trying to steal and Ramu stopping him. Madhavan punishes Manohar and Thangam takes responsibility to reform Manohar while Madhavan takes responsibility for Ramu.

Years roll by; Madhavan achieves success in his construction business with the help of Pillai and becomes a rich man. Ramu and Manohar are in college. Ramu concentrates on his studies while Manohar indulges in many vices. Thilagam, Pillai's daughter, loves Ramu. Before dying, Thangam's mother advises her to obey Madhavan always and never leave the house under any circumstances. Nair loses his tea business and Madhavan appoints Nair as the cook for the family. Pillai wishes to get Thilagam married to Ramu and both Madhavan and Thangam agree. However, Ramu disagrees, feeling he should first find a job and earn money.

One day, two ladies visit Madhavan: his father's mistress and her daughter Nandhini bearing a letter from his deceased father. Madhavan permits them to reside in his old house. But embarrassed about his father's past, he does not disclose the truth to Thangam. Madhavan brings Nandhini to work at his house and Thangam also accepts her as a servant. Nandhini complains about Nair to Madhavan's tenant who alleges that Thangam and Nair were in a relationship for many years. Thangam gets to know that Madhavan has bought jewels for Nandhini and gets suspicious about their relationship, but waits for him to reveal all. Manohar, who is jealous on seeing Ramu and Thilagam together, requests Thangam to organize his marriage with Thilagam to prove that she is unbiased. To prove it, Thangam convinces Ramu to sacrifice his love for Thilagam.

But Thilagam and Pillai refuse to her proposal. Nandhini abuses her emotional bond with Madhavan to spoil Thangam's reputation. Thangam notices Madhavan and Nandhini inside a closed room and suspects their relationship. Both Madhavan and Thangam suspect each other due to circumstances and lack of communication between them.

Madhavan meets Pillai to learn what Thangam told him. However, Pillai, who is tense with other matters, asks Madhavan to get out as he does not wish to discuss the marriage proposal, blaming Thangam for her inconsistency.

That night, Thangam informs Madhavan that after twelve years of marriage, she is pregnant. Though Madhavan has mixed feelings about her pregnancy, good sense prevails and he shows his affection. Madhavan's step-mother stages a drama and makes him take them to his home. Here, their atrocities increase, and both torture Thangam emotionally. Manohar who is angry with Ramu decides to kill him. But Ramu says he will not oppose Manohar's marriage plans and decides to leave to Mumbai for a job. Manohar visits Thilagam and while she is preparing to go out, steals her diamond ring. Shortly after that, Ramu visits Thilagam to bid her goodbye before leaving for Mumbai. Pillai files a Police complaint about the missing diamond ring. With a friend's help, Manohar drops the ring in Ramu's shirt to shift the blame on him. The Police find the ring in Ramu's shirt and Pillai is shocked but Thilagam does not accept it, stating Ramu had no need to steal the ring as money was also placed in the same cupboard.

Pillai accepts her logic and gets Ramu released on bail. At home, Nandhini and her mother talk ill about Thangam and her relationship with Nair. Nandhini and her mother order Thangam to leave the house. Ramu arrives at that moment and has an argument with Madhavan. Madhavan angrily states that Ramu is a thief and Thangam is a prostitute. He slaps Ramu, who slaps him back and Thangam intervenes to tell that it is up to Madhavan to clarify that statement Because of the constant torture by Nandhini and her mother, Thangam writes a suicide note to Thilagam and leaves home.

On returning home, Madhavan overhears Nandhini and her mother discussing how they schemed against Thangam and succeeded in throwing her out of home. Shocked, he realizes Thangam's goodness and purity. Thilagam arrives with Thangam's suicide note and she goes along with Madhavan to stop it. Madhavan stops Thangam and Ramu, who was trying to commit suicide and apologizes for his mistakes. A reformed Manohar confesses having stolen Thilagam's ring and pleads with Thangam to return. The Police arrest Nandhini and her mother for stealing from Madhavan's home. However, Thangam states it was gifted to them and gets them released. They seek forgiveness from Madhavan and Thangam. Ramu gets married to Thilagam.

Thanneer Thanneer[edit]

Athipattu, an arid village with around 300 families, has been facing acute water scarcity for several years. The villagers look forward to rains and hope that the government would take action to supply water to the village in some way.

Sevanthi, who comes to stay at her father's place for delivering her child, treks 10 miles every day with her baby to fetch potable water. She is compassionate and gives the water she brings to people in need. Sevanthi's husband Alagiri, is a policeman working in a neighboring village. Vathiyar is the teacher in the Government-run school in the village and the villagers treat him as their head.

Gopal is a hardworking, straightforward, honest, and aggressive person who fights for the basic rights and welfare of the village. Sevanthi happens to meet a stranger Vellaisamy (Guhan) while she is fetching water. Through Sevanthi, he learns about the acute water scarcity the village is facing. She introduces him to Vathiyar, who proposes the idea of serving water to the village, thereby getting a livelihood. Vellaisamy builds a water tank on a bullock cart with the villagers' contribution and uses it to fetch water from the neighboring village. Each home agrees to serve him food by turns daily, in lieu of his work. He starts supplying water from the Thenur river to the people.

One day, the villagers come to know from Sevanthi (who sees a newspaper advertisement) that Vellaisamy is wanted for murder, and carries a reward of Rs. 5,000/- for his capture. Vellaisamy explains that he murdered the rich village head who tried to outrage the modesty of his wife. Though the temple priest recommends handing him over to the police and collecting the prize money, most of the villagers refuse this idea as Vellaisamy is helping the village in solving their water problem. They all take an oath before God that they will not inform the police. Vathiyar says that he will take responsibility for protecting Vellaisamy if the police comes to know about him. Life goes on smoothly for the villagers with the drinking water problem being addressed to some extent.

Sevanthi's mother-in-law comes to see her newborn grandson and informs that Alagiri would be coming shortly to see his son. Sevanthi is shocked on hearing this; to prevent her policeman husband from coming there, she speaks badly about her husband and his family. Her mother-in-law gets annoyed and leaves the place, saying that her son would not come to take her back home. When Vathiar demands the reason for her odd behaviour, she explains she did this to protect Vellaisamy Meanwhile, the government announces the election date for the constituency. The two contesting parties belonging to the Nayakar and Reddiar communities come to the village soliciting the villagers' votes. The villagers express their anger for not responding to their repeated appeals to provide water facility to the village and decide to boycott the election. Not a single vote is registered in that village, which becomes news. Vandipettai Velusamy Naickar, the representative of the Naickar group, gets furious for losing the election by 300 votes and dismisses all the employees in his factory belonging to Athipattu village. He also sends people to destroy the bullock cart used by Vellaisamy to get water from the Thenur river. Vellaisamy is injured and the bullocks die. The villagers assemble to decide the future course of action. Vellaisamy comes up with the idea of digging a canal 10 miles long from the waterfall and Thenur river to the village. The villagers get convinced and start working together. They finish the canal work and plan for breaking the hill near the river to divert the water flow into the canal.

To the surprise of Sevanthi, Alagiri arrives at the village. She apologizes for her harsh words and he forgives her. Though Sevanthi tries her best to protect Vellaisamy from her husband, he comes to know about him through others. Alagiri tries to arrest Vellaisamy, who requests him to give a day to complete the hill breaking work so that the village will have water. At the request of the villagers, he leaves the place but informs his higher officers and the Irrigation department. Government officials come and order the villagers to stop the work as the villagers are doing irrigation department work without any approval.

Gopal and others shout at the irrigation department officials for ignoring their request for several years and declare they cannot stop the work now. Soon, the argument turns into a protest. The police orders lathi charge and many people get injured. The process of bringing water to Athipattu is stopped. The police arrive to arrest Vellaisamy. On the advice of the villagers, Gopal and Vellaisamy escape during a commotion. Suddenly, while running near the forest, Vellaisamy suffers a heart attack and dies. No one knows what happened to Gopal, though it is believed that he has joined the Naxalites. Most of the people leave the village looking for greener pastures, while a few like Sevanthi who love the village stay back and look at the sky every day with the hope that it would rain someday and their problems would come to an end.
