Gatekeeping (Communication)[edit]

Definition[edit]

Journalist filming at the scene of a newsworthy event.

A Gatekeeper's main role is to control access in various areas. Gatekeeping in the media is a form of censorship with regards to how information is transported via communication channels in the media. This notion of the term gatekeeping connects how the information is being transported to audiences [1]. The news agenda that is selected by the gatekeepers includes and presents "the styles, ethos, and ideologies of the newspaper" [2].

Gatekeeping in the Media[edit]

The introduction of gatekeeping has produced a new trust in media with regards to media sources. This notion is most visible in the news industry, where specific stories are selected to be covered by the news. This form of trust can be problematic as the news topics that receive coverage are not necessarily important social matters, but match the requirements in place from agenda-setting. The requirements included in agenda-setting may lead to issues as citizens intercepting the media coverage may develop a false and bias perception as to what problems are most important. This is because journalists may omit data about the story from news coverage for their own benefit [1].

The wide distribution of digital technologies has produced a new generation of gatekeepers who aim to use social media platforms as a means to generate, publish, and spread news stories on a global scale [3]. Through the use of far-reaching communication channels, citizens hone the ability to transfer and transmit messages through technologies such as television, newspaper, online websites, blogs, and through social media platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook. The gatekeepers, who are ordinary citizens, in this case, inhibit the power and ability to decide which content will be published and exported through their social media channels [4].

Recently, gatekeeping in the media is associated with how "news is created and circulated today, both as a theory and as a metaphor [5]. With the introduction of Web 2.0, news distributors are beginning to heavily rely on social media platforms with regards to publishing and sharing newsworthy information. In relation, news platforms also use social media platforms as a method to channel users to their original website. The ability to use modern technology alongside social media platforms allows news channels to excel in creating relationships and interacting with audiences at a quicker pace [5].

Citations[edit]

On the Visual Editor's toolbar, you'll find the "Cite" button. You can simply paste a URL, and the Visual Editor will try to sort out all of the fields you need. Be sure to review it, however, and apply missing fields manually (if you know them). You can also add books, journals, news, and websites manually. That opens up a quick guide for inputting your citations.

  • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
  • Check a few citations. Do the links work? Does the source support the claims in the article?
