Wolf Warrior 2 is an action-war and military film directed by Wu Jing, starring Wu Jing[1], Lu Jingshan[2], Frank Grillo[3] and others, which has earned 5.679 billion yuan at the box office.

The film tells the story of Leng Feng, a former Wolf Warrior soldier, encountering a national rebellion in Africa.He had been able to evacuate safely, but he could not forget the duty of a soldier and return to the battlefield to launch a rescue story. It was released on mainland China on July 28,2017.

Plot synopsis[edit]

Leng Feng was sentenced by a court martial for under the impulse to kill the bully who grabbed the house of his dead comrade. While in custody, his girlfriend Long Xiaoyun went missing while on a mission in Africa. After Leng Feng was released from prison, he went to Africa to find Xiao Yun's murderer. During this period, a rebellion occurred in the country where Leng Feng stayed. China sent its navy to the mission of withdrawing overseas Chinese. When Leng learned that Dr. Chen was trapped in a hospital 55 kilometers away. And the rebels tried to capture him. At the same time, from another overseas Chinese learned that Xiao Yun's murderer is staying in the country. Unable to get naval support, Leng Feng alone broke into the battlefield of smoke and launched a war with the enemy.

Wolf Warrior was Directed by Wu Jing and played by Wu Jing[1], Yu Nan[5], Scott Atkins[6] and so on. Wolf Warrior took six years of production and was released in China in 2015.

In 2015, Lu Jianmin started the Wolf Warrior[7] film series as a producer together with Wu Jing.

As a military lover, Lu Jianmin[8] has dreamed of becoming a soldier since he was a child, but he failed to become a soldier because he failed to meet the physical examination. But because of his military passion, he had always wanted to make a military film. Having met Wu Jing at a party, they became friends with the same hobby and often talked about military topics. Later, Wu Jing filmed I Am a Special Forces 2 [9]after 18 months of training in the army. During this period, the two sides have been planning to shoot a film on military themes. After making full preparations, the project Wolf Warrior was launched. Lu Jianmin likes reading online novels with military themes. He gained inspiration from the novel and contacted the authors, inviting them to become writers.

On June 19, 2016, Wolf Warrior 2 was officially started production at a film and television base in Huairou, Beijing[10].

Production team: Frank Griero, who plays the villain in the Captain America [11]series, and Sam Hargrave[12], who is an action director of films like Captain America 3[13], and Task Force X[14].

Tidbits[edit]

The six-minute underwater opening scene used a shot to the end, shooting the scene for six months. Actors and photographers spend nearly 10 hours in the water every day.[15]

On August 23, 2016, filming the "Tank rolling car" scene, Wu Jing drove a tank alone, shuttling through six tanks, rolling over a truck.In just 10 seconds, the car instantly became a pile of scrap iron. This was the first time that a domestic actor personally drove a tank over a car.[15]

During filming, nearly 100 car models, two model tanks weighing 20 tons and one aircraft model were blown up.

In the film, Wu Jing holds the national flag through the war area, which is not a fabrication.

It was the largest evacuation of overseas Chinese citizens since 1949. It was also a big rescue of the four major forces, sea, land, air and army. This is even more a huge overseas rescue operation for Chinese citizens.[16]

On August 15, 2017, Wolf Warrior 2 was confirmed to be postponed to September 28, running for 2 months[17].

Wolf Warrior 2 was re-released on September 19, 2018, for a one-month [18]run.[19]

The film was filmed in Jinshitan[20] (African beach part), and Zhuanghe Port (African port part) in Dalian, Liaoning[21], an iron factory in Xuanhua District of Zhangjiakou, Hebei (African Chinese factory part), Maasai Mara [22]National Wildlife Sanctuary in Kenya (African grassland part), and slum of South African (African infectious disease isolation area)[10][11].

The box office exceeded 1 billion RMB in 83 hours and exceeded 4.5 billion RMB in 23 days. The box office exceeded 100 million RMB a day for 18 consecutive days, ranking the world's top 100 box office.

With Wolf Warrior 2 revenue 5 billion yuan[27], Wu's company earned about 560 million yuan at the box office.

On October 26,2017, Wolf Warrior finished at 5.681 billion yuan, ranking 55th at the global box office.

Wolf Warrior 2 from "import period", "growth period", "maturity period" to "recession period", it combines product strategy, price strategy, publicity strategy and channel strategy based on 4P theory.

The type of Wolf Warrior 2 is a "military action film", which fits the patriotic atmosphere of the August 1st Army Day during the release season, and forms a movie-watching boom with its relatively excellent plot content.

In the film Internet ticket purchase has occupied more than 80% of the national ticket warehouse, various ticket websites have launched preferential activities to attract audiences, such as Guevara website launched "5 RMB to watch Wolf Warrior 2 , and  Tao ticket launched "10 RMB tickets at 10 PM".

According to Stanley Rosen, a professor at the University of Southern California who studies Chinese society and cinema, Wolf Warrior 2 imitate Hollywood type to build individualistic emotion. But in China, national films promote patriotism through building collective consciousness among individuals, groups and countries. So some foreign mainstream media like BBC can not accept Chinese superheroes.[35]


The excellent box office of Wolf Warrior 2 means that Hollywood model films are successful, and it also means that China is more mature in making films. However, we need to look at the box office results more objectively. The success of Wolf Warrior 2 is mainly a typical Chinese phenomenon,[36] and its box office results are not reflected abroad. Wolf Warrior 2 has not achieved commercial success in overseas markets, so the Chinese film industry and building Chinese superheroes still have a long way to go.[37]
