Divjakë-Karavasta National Park (Albanian: Parku Kombëtar Divjakë-Karavasta) is a national park in western Albania established on 19 October 2007. Defined in a territory of 222.3 km2 (86 sq mi), the park extends across the plain of Myzeqe within the basin of the Mediterranean immediately along the Adriatic Sea. It comprises the lagoon of Karavasta, the estuaries of Seman and Shkumbin, and the region's diverse environment of floodplains, forests, woodlands, meadows, reed beds, salt marshes and wetlands.

Management[edit]

Responsibility of the Divjakë-Karavasta National Park belongs to the National Agency of Protected Areas, which is directorate operating under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Environment.[1] It was enlisted as a national park on 19 October 2007 by the government of Albania in order to protect and conserve the region's extraordinary ecosystems and habitats along with their faunal and floral communities.[2][3] In 1995, the Karavasta Lagoon was designated as a wetland of international importance under the criteria of the Ramsar Convention.[4] Despite these protections, BirdLife International and Plantlife have further listed the park as an important Bird and Plant Area of global significance, respectively.[5][6]

Geography[edit]

Divjakë-Karavasta National Park is located in the counties of Fier and Tirana in central Albania. It lies between latitudes 40° and 59° N and longitudes 19° and 29° E.[3] The park occupies 22,230.24 ha (222.3024 km2) and constitutes a substantial section of the Albanian Adriatic Sea Coast on the southeastern shore of the Adriatic Sea within the Mediterranean Sea.[2][7][8]
