Nguyen Hue Boulevard is a street located in District 1- the center of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It runs roughly northwest to southeast, from the People’s Committee Building to Bach Dang Harbor. It is a popular destination as one of Ho Chi Minh City’s walking streets.
Many events and cultural activities are organized on Nguyen Hue street during special occasions, such as Tet holiday. The street is lined with French colonial architecture as well as several big hotels.
Orientation[edit]
Nguyen Hue street is a walking street with 670m in total length and 60m in width, consisting of two areas. The first area, President Ho Chi Minh Statue Park, stretches from Le Thanh Ton street to Le Loi street, where the Municipal People’s Committee stands. The second area of Nguyen Hue Square runs from Le Loi street to Ton Duc Thang street and includes a granite-paved walking street in the middle and two lanes of vehicles on the two sides.
History[edit]
In 1790, under Nguyen Anh’s reign, Nguyen Hue was a canal used for carrying water from the Saigon River to Gia Dinh Fort. Under the period of French colonial rule, it served as an inner-city waterway for merchant ships and military vessels. Along the banks were two streets named Charner and Rigault. In 1887, the French had the canal filled and merged the two streets into one: Charner Boulevard. On March 22nd, 1955, Charner Boulevard was renamed as Nguyen Hue Boulevard and was considered the most beautiful street of Saigon at the time.
Name origin[edit]
Like many streets in Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Hue street was named after a national hero. Nguyen Hue (later known as Emperor Quang Trung) lived in the 18th century (1753-1792). He and his brothers Nguyen Nhac and Nguyen Lu led the Tay Son rebellion and were responsible for overthrowing the Le Dynasty, as well as two rival feudal Nguyen house in the south and the Trinh in the north, unifying Vietnam.
Culture[edit]
Nguyen Hue street is best known for the flower festival taking place annually on Tet holiday. Every year, the festival’s concept of decoration changes, but organizers generally try to replicate the simplicity of Vietnamese countryside houses and activities. The main attraction of the festival is the many types of flowers on display.
Nguyen Hue promenade is a popular attraction to both foreigners and Vietnamese alike. On weekends, vehicles are not allowed to travel here. Especially, the street art performance named Ho Chi Minh City Street Show is held every weekend evenings.

Located in the central district of Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Hue is surrounded by popular tourist destinations, the Saigon Opera House and Dong Khoi shopping street are only 100 metres away. Notre Dame Cathedral and the Reunification Palace are only a five-minute walk away. The neighborhood contains a wide variety of restaurants, bars and hotels.
