Hurricane Alma was one of only two instances of a major hurricane forming in May in the East Pacific since reliable records began. The first named storm of the 2002 Pacific hurricane season, Alma formed from a complex genesis consisting of a tropical wave, and a gale area, with development being helped by the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) was involved; the sixth time during May of 2002 that a cyclone formed due to intervention from the MJO. It strengthened to a peak of =, equivalent to a Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.
