Seskiavikh Bay (/seskjəvɪk/), known in Salofang as Seskiavikh Beya (/seskjiavix/), is a city on the west coast of Pactone, in its eponymous province. It is the second largest city in the country, with a population of 1,537,842 in city limits, and around 2 million in the urban area, however in recent years its urban area has almost merged with Edgewater's.

Seskiavikh Bay was settled in 1672 by Ingerish from the Marshlands from the south, and was incorporated in 1704. It steadily grew in size until the railway was built, when it boomed in population. It was incorporated as a city in 1813. It continued to grow during the industrial revolution, becoming an important industrial city. Soon, developers took advantage of Seskiavikh Bay's mild climate and turned it into a center of tourism. In 1972, entrepeneur Erhes Monce founded the technology company Navisco. at first, it remained small, but in 2006 they introduced the NavPhone, which was popular worldwide and caused the company to blow up. Soon after, many other technology companies were started and the city's economy blew up.

It is the center of Pactone's technology industry, with the global coorporation Navisco headquartered there. It is also a hub for transportation, having the second largest port in Pactone and being the origin of Pactone's national airline NezhaPac. It is also a center of tourism, being the second most visited city in Pactone and first by other Pactoneans, with sandy beaches and a mild subtropical climate.

Etymology[edit]

The word for Seskiavikh is thought to mean "By the water surrounded by land" in Salofang, however in modern times the meaning has been lost. When the Ingerish first setteled the area, they called it "Seskiavikh Bay", after the Salofang word for the area and its location on a bay. Salofang did not have a word for bay, so the Ingerish word made its way into the language as a loanword (beya).

Seskiavikh Bay has two popular nicknames: Palm City, after the abundance of palm trees in the area, especially the Pactonean Palmetto (Sabal Pactonea) and Marsh Palm (Litore Palus), the only extant species of its genus. It is also called Little Sister City, since it is the second largest city in Pactone, after Edgewater. However, some locals call it "Big Sister City" since it was founded first.

History[edit]

Salofang Settlement[edit]

The Salofang first settled the area around Seskiavikh Bay around 10,000 years ago. There was no large settlement around it, but there were a few isolated villages. However, around 2,000 years ago, a branch of the Talhen tribe, located around present day Tora Altea, migrated to the bay after a harsh winter in the mountains and formed a small village on the coast of the bay, near present day downtown, named Seskiavikh.

Castellanese Exploration[edit]

In 1602, a group of Castellanese explorers landed on what is now the northern coast of Virena and founded the town Las Palmas, however the town was soon abandoned due to famine.

Ingerish Settlement[edit]

In 1671, Ingerish explorers came from Caswhim and Noapeake in the south and explored the bay. Initially, they only explored and traded with the Salofang living in the area, however a year later they founded the village of Seskiavikh Bay. Most of the Salofang living in the town contracted Ulethan diseases and died, but the remaining were friendly. They exchanged goods, food, and culture, and soon formed one of the first examples of modern Pactonean culture. The city continued to grow under Ingerish rule until the Independence War.

Independence War[edit]

In the late 1790s, tensions arose between the Salofang, Ingerish colonialists, and native Ingerish. The colonialists were unhappy with the government because of the taxation of ships going in and out of the Seskiavikh Bay harbor, and the Salofang were being opressed. After the first shots of the war were fired in Edgewater, many Edgewatereans fled to the city and others to escape the fighting. However, soon the war was brought to Seskiavikh Bay when a group of Ingerish soldiers shot at civilian Pactoneans, killing 9. This lead to civil unrest around the city, which caused the Ingerish to blockade the Mallory Strait, blocking off the bay. The first battle in Seskiavikh Bay was fought when a militia of Seskiavikhans stole 3 Ingerish ships and tried to fight the blockade. This ended in a decisive Ingerish victory, however, the tables turned when Pactoneans won the infamous battle of Pidgeon's Head by trapping Ingerish on the peninsula and killing most. 1,025 Ingerish and 324 Pactoneans died, making it the deadliest battle of the Independence War. A few more minor battles were fought around the city until Pactone gained independence.

Post Independence War and Industrial Revolution[edit]

After the Independence War, damaged buildings were reconstructed, and the city continued on as usual. This changed, however, in the early to mid 1800s, when the construction of a railway to the city brought the industrial revolution to it. The Seskiavikh Bay Port was upgraded to a modern port and soon became the second busiest in the country. A large industrial area was also constructed on the north coast of the bay. Most of the factories have been demolished and replaced with modern buildings, however a few remain.

In 1886, a category 3 cyclone hit Seskiavikh Bay, bringing hurricane force winds. It caused extreme destruction to the city and killed around 6,000 people, making it the deadliest natural disaster in Pactonean history. The city did not fully recover for around 10 years, and despite the rarity of tropical cyclones in the area, buildings were made to be hurricane-proof.

Early 20th Century[edit]

Modern Times[edit]

High rises being constructed in downtown

Over the past 30 years, Seskiavikh Bay has been extensively developed, with many new high rises being constructed in Downtown and Seskiavikh Beach, and new neighborhoods and suburbs being developed. Many historical buildings were demolished to make way for these, so a new law was made, that made a list of historical buildings that could not be demolished, and also made it illegal to demolish a building that was constructed before 1820.

Navisco's Headquarters

In 1972, Erhes Monce started the company Navisco from his house in Seskiavikh Bay. The company initially started by making websites, however they soon started making their own electronics. In 2007, Navisco released the NavPhone, which blew up worldwide and blew up the company. Soon after, Navisco started making other devices, such as computers and tablets, and other electronic gadgets. They also released a new model of the NavPhone on average every 2 years. In 2016, Monce stepped down as CEO of Navisco and retired, and Khana Zhalhesh became CEO, making Navisco one of the largest companies with a female CEO. Navisco contined to grow into the largest coorporation in Pactone and one of the largest in the world.
