From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A duodenoscope is a thin flexible tube that provides remote access to the duodenum to both search for issues using a tiny camera and light system as well as operate on them with various miniaturized surgical instruments. Compared to an endoscope, the end of the duodenoscope can be adjusted to provide better viewing angles. Under anesthesia and threaded through the mouth and throat, they can mitigate the need for invasive surgery and longer recovery times.

Risks[edit]

Owing to their intricate nature, duodenoscopes have a number of internal crevices that can trap bacteria and transfer them from patient to patient causing serious infections. To prevent this, strict cleaning procedures are usually specified by the manufacturer.
