Phoebe Adams (b. 1953) is an American artist known for her abstract bronze and mixed media sculptures. Her works are often described as referencing biomorphic, organic, and natural forms, including the human body.[1][2][3] Adams works primarily in bronze, but she also creates pieces using or incorporating other materials including encaustic, felt, horsehair, and wood.[4]
Adams' works are held in several public collections, including the Museum of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Walker Art Center, and the Storm King Art Center.
Biography[edit]
Adams was born in Greenwich, Connecticut. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1976 and also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.[5] Adams received her Masters of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Albany in 1978.[5][6] and was a professor in the Fine Arts Department at Kutztown University until retiring in 2014.[7]
She was the 1986–1987 sculptor-in-residence at Chesterwood (Massachusetts)[8] and was awarded a grant from the Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 1998.
