Final list comments

Hi Dinch, I was looking at the Lycoming list and had a few more ideas. I am working on the county map with wikilinked names, and will put it at the end. Do you think the first paragraph material "Any municpality in Pennsylvania with more than 10 persons can incorporate as a borough. Any township or borough with a population of at least 10,000 can ask the state legistlature to become chartered as a city. All territory in Pennsylvania is incoporated: there are no unincorporated areas in the county or state." needs a ref? Also, I now see that the townships have updated info boxes that include the FIPS codes - do you think we should also include these in the list? I like the DYK hook - it just needs to be verifiable, so you have sources that say that, so it is OK. I am working on the map at {{Lycoming County Pennsylvania Map}} - have the northernmost five twps so far - not sure how crowded it will be once I get further south. Map is done and in the list. I need to make at least a stub for the railroad (I have the DYK hook already) and then we can submit to FLC. I think I also want to carefully reread the list and may need to add two refs - sot sure if they are in already or not. Presque Isle GAC and List

I had seen that Presque Isle State Park was in GAC but did not do anything more as I had edited it and so couldn't do the GA review, nor had I nominated it, so I didn't think to work on the GA nom. Thanks for working on it. I think the daughter article he is referring to is History of Presque Isle - it is also missing the sources asked for.

I went to a library and got Godcharles' book on PA Civil History and checked all the info in the list. There are a few changes I need to make in it. I started checking the counties too, but it does not always say what county old townships were originally in. I also need to figure out what happened to Limestone Twp in Clinton Co.

The book "History of Centre and Clinton Counties" says Limestone was one of the 12 original twps in Clinton Co. and was taken from Lycoming Co. but there is no Limestone Twp. in Clinton Co. today. There is obviously still a Limestone Twp in Lycoming Co. and the boundaries match up exactly (Crawford Twp in Clinton and Limestone Twp in Lycoming). However, the PHMC twp sheet and Godcharles both say Crawford was formed from Wayne Twp in 1841 (after Clinton Co in 1839). Allison Twp was a part of Lock Haven for several years, so maybe Limestone got attached to Wayne for a few years. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:38, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
On Presque Isle State Park I moved the refs out of the lead to the "State park" subsection in History (except for the 4 million visitors a year claim) and added the new state parks calendar ref. (unindent) It is OK to have refs in the lead paragraphs for direct quotes or extraordinary claims. I think having refs for the most visitors and 20 Must See State Park claims are OK. As long as they are not excessive, I have seen refs in the lead. Larrys had 4 in the lead paragraphs when it was on the Main Page (two were added back in by Daniel Case). Unless someone complains at GAC I would not worry about it.

Did you see I added a history subsection, mostly from Cupper? I also wondered about making the first sentence "PA state park" vs "state park in PA" consistent with the other 119 PA state park articles Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:00, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Lists

I made a new List of villages in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania and made a reply on the FLC talk page. Feel free to tweak at will. Not sure what else to do - I don't really like how Frog is, too convoluted. I do have some ideas on how to tweak the former townships table based on all this, but am not sure if I should wait until after FLC. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:04, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

  • I stashed the counties list in Frog before chopping it from the FLC list. I think it would be a better fit in the History of LC article. If you want to add it, feel free. I could also work on making it text and not a list (chronological discussion) - on second thought that may be a better way to go. I found a new source on the Cogan House Covered Bridge (want to nominate it for GA, maybe FA eventually), and a newspaper article on Worlds End I want to go look up for getting it closer to FA (but see how Presque Isle's FAC turns out first). I think three supports and a neutral is enough to get it Featured - not a lot of input in the most recent FLs on the Signpost. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:30, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
    • When I made my list of parks that could get to GA I was just thinking out loud - Susquehanna is pretty short as an article, I think I can find stuff on the park history and the Hiawatha in newspaper archives, plus Cupper's book at least mentions the transfer from DCNR to the Chamber of Commerce, not sure what else. For Little Pine there is a History of the Little Pine Valley book that has several pages on the CCC camp and dam construction. Colton Point and Leonard Harrison are so well known, there have to be more sources out there. I found two articles on Worlds End. I think most parks could get to GA, just need sources. Probably best to try and do it systematically, pick one or two and work on those first, then have a few more next in line. Worlds End seems like the best bet to me for next FA after Presque Isle.       • Good idea - one place to start may be the DCNR's 20 Must see parks (really 21 parks) here. Worlds End And Presque Isle are both on the list. Parks on the National Register of Historic Places will have fairly detailed documentation, like this for Worlds End. I also like the DCNR CCC archives for park resorces. Ricketts Glen is another one - just describing all the waterfalls would be an article. Ravensburg has CCC and NRHP, so possible. I think the problem would be ones that are tiny (Upper Pine Bottom anyone) or undeveloped (Rush, Hillman, etc.) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:08, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Featured List of the Day Experiment

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. Presque Isle birds

Oh well, sorry about that (wild goose chase?). I got the History section expanded. Threw in a few things that are on the shore (Anthony Wayne dying) but figured it was OK as the fort was named Fort Presque Isle. Thanks - I got kind of obsessed with it and hope I was not too bossy / taking things over - just had a mental picture of how to organize it better and found some good sources. I think I will add Long Pond and Graveyard Pond to the park map. I was also going to ask Finetooth and Michael Devore for a once over - there have been so many changes made, I am sure a typo or grammatical error or two has snuck in. I think Dtbohrer deserves a Groundhog when all this is over - checking all those birds AND finding the newspaper article on Gull Point. You also deserve another one - thanks man! D'Oh!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the catch, obviously fish stick and fish stock are not the same things. White Deer Hole Creek uses fish stock for stocked with fish (I think Daniel Case added that link in FAC). LOTD experiment

You seem to be supporting both methods of getting list of the day approved. Now that my project is fully up and running, I though you might want to consider the four main benefits of my method over the one that you seem to be supporting at WP:LOTDP:

  1. There is a set of orphaned articles for persons who do not have any featured lists of their own or persons that would like to take responsibility for more. Anyone can nominate such orphans. This benefits WP by getting people involved in list articles that might not have active editors to update them or defend them against vandalism. Please consider adopting one of our orphans.
  2. Each list will be encouraged to respond to commentary and feedback during the candidacy period, which will hopefully improve the quality of the articles.
  3. Articles without pictures will be encouraged to find them. E.g., List of Harry Potter films cast members had no image before its nominator added an image for this experiment. This type of thing, of course, improves the project.
  4. Articles are encouraged to add relevant projects to their talk page. This alerts other project to articles that they would likely have an interest in and would be able to either improve or protect.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 17:44, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Nice article expansion - later I will do some copyedits and add some newspaper refs I have been saving from when the lanes / bridge / ramps opened. You could use the photo from the Infobox. I think the second EL is probably OK - leave it in and see what anybody else says. As for DYK, how about:

  • I made a new subsection in User:Ruhrfisch/Resources on PA Geology. I will take a look at Elk Knob. Still have to add refs at Market Street Bridge too. When I looked at the Florida map it worked OK - not sure what the problem was before. I added 2 commas to the DYK hook, sounds fine to me (have not yet read the article carefully). For the images, I really think that you need to jump in the car right now and capture some great pictures of wildlife! Just kidding. Singletary Lake and State Park

Congrats on the latest DYK! How about this for a hook?

Black Mo

Cool, let me know how I can help. It is a park I would love to go to, so maybe I can manage a trip there and get some more photos (though winter pix are not always as lovely). As mentioned I have some newspaper articles to add to Worlds End and the Geology links to add to it, Presque Isle, and a bunch of other state parks (though not, unfortunately, Black Moshannon). I am pleasantly surprised at how the RfA is going so far - figured there would be someone popping up that I slighted and forgot about to oppose and tell the (wiki)world about it. Or some horrendous optional question - Jimbo Wales accidentally desysops everyone but you, then is hit by a bus.. How would you run the encylcopedia while he recovers? Sorry to break into this convo, but I had a quick question on the Black Mo article. Dinch, I noticed today that while integrating the refs into the text (nice work on that by the way) that you changed the elevation from the GNIS value to then cited the new value to Topozone. Is there a specific reason for the change, cause I think it'd be better to keep the GNIS value and cite to that, since all the other state parks are from that source. Your thoughts? Alright, I changed the reference for both the coordinates and elevation to GNIS using the format found here. I removed the Topozone reference altogether, because I wasn't sure if there was another location where it'd be beneficial. GNIS References

After adding the GNIS reference to Black Mo, I figure I'll start adding them to other state parks as well. I wanted to pose a question or you and Ruhrfisch. What style of citation should I use? I based the Black Mo reference off of the example shown on the Template:Gnis#Template:Gnis3 page:

I like using the Gnis3 template for its ease of use. I also prefer the shorter name from the first example, I don't think its necessary to list "Geographic Names Information System Feature Detail Report" since GNIS is already listed under the parameter "work". Finally, I do like having the date that the entry appeared in the GNIS database. So here's my proposed reference structure:
